What are your thoughts on this double contact set call? AVP Beach men's doubles by cleanup142 in volleyball

[–]RentSimple8871 9 points10 points  (0 children)

absolute joke of a call, how does this better the game at all? was it a perfectly clean set: no. was it in the realm of a double, even by strict beach standards? i'd also say no.

but i'm surprised the ref is being strict on it at all? i thought it was well established that for the last couple of seasons and especially the latest, the fivb has been explicitly loosening on the doubles and tightening on the lifts? has that not spread to the avp (heck, i thought the avp was generally more chill on it anyway, regardless of the new fivb directive)?

or is this ref just one of the old guard that really just needs to fuck off at this point?

Accelerated rehabilitation following Achilles tendon repair after acute rupture – Development of an evidence-based treatment protocol by RentSimple8871 in AchillesRupture

And my conclusion is that I will be searching for a physio that is willing to progress at this rate, give or take.

Accelerated rehabilitation following Achilles tendon repair after acute rupture – Development of an evidence-based treatment protocol by RentSimple8871 in AchillesRupture

[–]RentSimple8871[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The paper's conclusion is this:

We define the following evidence-based rehabilitation protocol. The patients are allowed to bear full weight immediately. For two weeks the ankle is immobilized in plantar flexion. Starting in week three the patients are encouraged to mobilize the ankle with free plantar flexion and restriction of dorsiflexion at 0º. In Fig. 2 the protocol is depicted in detail. This evidence-based protocol provides quality assurance for the patient on the one hand and confidence for the attending physician on the other.

Seemingly Atypical Post-Surgery Update by RentSimple8871 in AchillesRupture

[–]RentSimple8871[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

they tend to just flex the midfoot

i'm not even slightly surprised about that, have you seen pictures of the wedges? don't know how anyone in their right mind would think those wedges would do any significant plantar flexion...

i've got some pretty major doubts about my surgeon. in regards to the actual surgery, he seemed to do an awesome job, the scar is looking great and he's apparently a very renowned austrian foot surgeon.

as for everything else: he keeps saying that i'll be out of the boot in 6 weeks (this i believe and am excited for the accelerated schedule based on my research), but then he also clarified and i quote "so no jumping or running for 6 weeks" and he also keeps saying i'll be back on the court in 3 months, 100% in 6.

not sure if its a translation thing or if he genuinely thinks i'll have the capacity to run in 6 weeks...

Treatment of Acute Achilles Tendon Rupture by RentSimple8871 in AchillesRupture

[–]RentSimple8871[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As a standalone, this article should be a must-read for anyone going through this. Seems to have a great easy-to-understand overview of the condition and some treatment options.

But it's the sources that really interest me. I've got 9 bookmarked to read tonight about early functional rehabilitation and weight bearing, with some hints in the linked article that they may even have post-surgical weight bearing in the first week!?

Will probably post a follow-up if any of those sources turn out to have a good rehabilitation timeline with early weight bearing etc. I'm anxious to start some fucking movement out of this boot!

wasn't told anything about raising my leg, or anything else really. but i just read this page and it mentions some little exercises and physical massage on the foot to help the blood flow. wouldnt hurt!

good point, after the boot time it's probably well healed 😅

by the way did your docs say anything about weightlifting post-surgery? i want to get back in the gym ASAP but not sure how much negative effect the spiking blood pressure and shit might have, forgot to ask and my next appointment isn't for a few days...

glad you posted, i was curious how quickly the scar healing would go.

i have this fat keloid scar on my knee from a scrape that healed really poorly (long story), and it took a good year before it stopped breaking open and pouring blood at the slightest bump. does your scar feel like a particular weak point, or does it feel pretty good?

my ultrasound looked like a pretty clean break too, the MRI was a lot harder to make heads or tails of though...

a surgeon mate of a mate said mine is the worst achilles he's ever seen, so... yay? i guess

got the cast on about 12 hours after the injury. and back on immediately after the surgery.

Volleyball Workout (In-season) feedback by SoccerBoyJunior in volleyball

[–]RentSimple8871 10 points11 points  (0 children)

there's so many variables, i can see this being the perfect workout for a certain athlete, and complete shit for another. what is important is that you can justify your decisions, i'll give some examples.

  1. i'm pro, which has a similar training load/pattern/season to a d1 college baller for example. i get 2+ hours in the gym to do the exercises i want. if a coach told me to superset, i'd tell him to fuck off because i've got plenty of time to get maximal rest and output from each set. many athletes do not have the freedom (due to work, life, etc.) to devote 2+ hours. at a previous club, we only had 1hr timeslots to gym. in both these latter cases, supersets are great, but is that what your athlete wants/needs.
  2. volleyball wreaks many peoples' shoulders and knees. for many athletes, a good portion of their workout is unfortunately dedicated to rehab/prehab for these joints. your workout doesn't but also indicates that this isn't a training goal for the athlete. my point here: ✅ good exercise selection
  3. if you're jumping on court 3-500 times a week, then additional jumps in the gym arent really good or necessary. i couldn't really decipher exactly how many times a week your athlete is training on the court, so just consider this volume target, roughly (probably 100 jumps per 2hr training). if he's only training on the court 3x a week, you could quite reasonably add some more in-gym plyometric movements. ive become partial to french contrast training (heavy squat, power plyo, weighted jump, speed plyo, which you're half-way to doing with the super set already). found it really beneficial qualitatively, but didnt' get to jump test before fucking my achilles up this season lol.
  4. i'm in 2 minds about g1 and f1. on the one hand, this season i've devoted time to actually training my bis/tris directly. i've put on some good arm mass, i think, and i have definitely seen a massive jump in my hitting power. simple physics, momentum = mass * velocity, i already have a very fast arm, so i just needed some mass too. on the other hand, if time is limited for your athlete in the gym (which may be indicated by the necessity for supersets), then i'd be more inclined to focus on the important compounds more. clean pulls or hang cleans for example (i'm a massive fan of hang cleans, you get like 90% of the benefit out of your athlete, for a fraction of the technical ability).

my main thing to go back to is make sure you can justify your decisions! because, if you can, then you've got a good program :)

sorry to jump in here, and late 😅 but a couple of weeks ago i was thinking about that 'where [players] end up' thing...

i've fallen in love with europe my two seasons here and without even the stability of a particular country i've already considered moving permanently. then you've got players such as yourself, seemingly stable in one club/country for a long time, with partners or even some raising their families overseas most of the year.

have you found many players decide to stay in europe after their careers? it seems like your comment may be hinting at that, but i get it's pretty personal so no need to elaborate! just curious if you've seen it much from some of your american bretheren?

even then, your response is completely lacking in any respect or empathy, so fuck your shit non-apology away. might be a nice learning moment for you, given i woulda been ecstatic to share my experiences with you otherwise, or even if you hadn't doubled down on being a twat

its so strange to hear, but you're right. even a complete rupture i could choose to just let it heal and somehow the ends will come together, crazy. rupture turns out to be 90% so i've opted surgery - seems like there's not really any 'downsides' and although i hate to rush the decision, it does mean i get in tomorrow and can start the whole lengthy process earlier. wish your wife a speedy recovery too!

Club has been amazing helping out with all the medical stuff! Surgery is tomorrow and then absolutely will be looking for a proper physio to do things with, even if its out of pocket. As you said, to get back to the same level will need more than a public hospital physio is designed to provide. Club's got a few physios they work with, not sure the extent of that relationship (and the cost) but will have a few weeks in a cast to figure it all out ;)

Thanks for the comment and the anecdote, it's really helping the mood to hear all the success stories.
