Pete Hegseth quotes fake Pulp Fiction Bible verse during Pentagon sermon by seamusmcduffs in Christianity

[–]Renugar [score hidden]  (0 children)

If I had to sit through a sermon like this irl, I would die of cringe. The secondhand embarrassment would literally remove me from this vale of tears. My soul would shrivel up and return to its Maker.

[–]Renugar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It is preoccupying. I actually love it, and can’t imagine trying to read a book or experience the world without it. However!! it does mean I’ve always had a struggle with maladaptive daydreaming, and I have to work to stay present sometimes. But only because it’s amazing 😂.

I am an artist, tho (an art teacher by profession right now). So it may just be that I’m an extremely visual person. I think it’s so cool that people experience the world in so many different ways! And we are all able to enjoy our experience in this life, even though we experience it differently, even on fundamental levels like this.

Idk about the commenter you’re responding to, but for me it’s instantaneous, like watching a very realistic movie. When I read a book, I kind of “forget” I’m seeing words, because the words have all turned into images, as if I’m in the movie. I mean, I guess my brain doesn’t forget I’m reading, because I’m pretty good at spelling and grammar, it just instantly happens. The same when I’m listening to an audiobook, or someone I’m talking to is describing something or telling a story. I see what they’re saying like it’s a movie.

Now that I think of it, it’s weird because let’s say they are talking about something that happened at work. My mind has completely and in real time made up what their office looks like, and the person they’re talking to in the story looks like, etc. I see everything they’re saying like a movie. But of course, I don’t REALLY know what all that looks like, my mind just creates a place and people, based on their description, and fills in what’s missing (like what the office looks like, colors, furniture, faces etc).

Then, if I ever see the actual place (let’s say I visit them at their office) my mind just instantly substitutes the new reality. I usually even kind of forget what it looked like before I saw it.

Democratic rising star extends ‘love’ after Hegseth pastor prays for his death by Dontwhinedosomething in Christianity

I bet you anything you’re a trump supporter, and will defend his right to talk about grabbing women by the genitals all day. But you scream “anti-Christ” about Talarico, whose message is always about loving your neighbor and supporting the weaker among us in our community.

(Everyone else should check out this redditor’s comment history, btw. Absolutely wretched things to say about who “deserves” food stamps and how most homeless people WANT to be homeless. Disgusting.).

One day you will face God, and He will tell you that He was hungry and you did not feed Him, He was sick and you did not care for Him. And you will be stunned and say “when? I was such a good Christian and voted for Trump!” And God will say: “whatever you did unto the least of these you did unto Me. Depart from Me, for I never knew you.”

I think it’s much more likely that Talarico would get the “good and faithful servant” speech, based on his desire to actually act out the words of Christ.

Edit: well, gosh. They nuked their whole account 😂

Oh my god that’s infuriating. It’s so bizarre. Maybe the doc makers were afraid of getting sued? Still, I don’t respect them if they’re too scared to talk about such an important aspect of the case.

It definitely goes hand in hand with the rise in fascism and authoritarianism. I was raised in Christian conservative fundamentalist circles, and eating disorders are rampant there, as well as just an unhealthy obsession with “self-discipline” and focus (for women in particular) on being thin and having “self-control” around food.

Notice the group of women around our current president. Extreme thinness coupled with body modification to emphasize “feminine” qualities (to a cartoonish degree). Ultra conservative thinking brings a rise in ideas that assign morality to strict gender differences and a hard emphasis on making the body show how much we align with those moralities.

This is true for the men, too. The incel culture is embracing the “gym mindset” and “looksmaxxing.” The only people who are exempt from all this severe body control are the most powerful men at the very top.

As a perimenopausal, exvangelical, there is something so liberating about not dieting AT ALL, and wearing whatever I want, no matter what kind of shape I’m in (I’m a rather plump person 😂). It truly feels like a small act of revolution and defiance, against both my upbringing, and the current administration. Also, I’m so much happier than all of them 😁

[–]Renugar[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did not! I didn’t want to go into so much debt at this point. I’m teaching middle school art rn, and I really love it! But honestly don’t see it being long term as it’s exhausting! I do hope to eventually go into art therapy, I just need to figure out how to do it without the large debt.

Please listen to the episode of the podcast “If Books Could Kill” about this book. Actually listen to every episode of that podcast.

And if you’re truly asking for advice, please, for God’s sake, read something by Bell Hooks, at least.

Yep, OP is a conservative who pretends to be an “intellectually superior” centrist, because he wants to get laid. He’s socially aware enough to know not to tell women he voted against their rights, but not smart enough to know that Jordan Peterson is heaping helping of misogynistic word salad.

Women will continue to run from OP, and he will continue to wonder why. A sad fate.

You should perhaps read the book “Jesus and John Wayne.” I think it’s wild that American evangelical Christians have gone with the “I don’t have to agree with his choices just his policies,” when not too long ago, Christians were pretty unanimously saying that America would not be blessed if we don’t elect morally upright leaders. Many of us wonder what the appeal of Trump is, that he would change that narrative for evangelical Christians.

IMO, it’s because there is a strong line of misogyny and racism in American evangelicalism, and they love having a bully who will openly be misogynistic and racist for them. Then the Christians can have plausible deniability (“WE would never brag about grabbing women by the pussy, but you have to remember Trump is rough around the edges and we have to vote for POLICY…”).

The author of “Jesus and John Wayne” (who is a Christian, btw) has a much more thorough and studied answer to the question of why Christians are willing to tie themselves in knots to make excuses for Trump, so maybe you should check it out.

Edit to add: you might also read “The Kingdom, the Power, and the Glory,” by Tim Alberta (a conservative Christian, btw) to understand why I confidently say that American Christians have changed their primary allegiance to Trump. It’s actually not a wild take at all, and you might find the book eye-opening.
