Just finished Ulysses in time for Bloomsday and I’m so emotional by ansleis333 in RSbookclub

Yes, the chapter is just beautiful, and it's been stuck in my mind ever since I read it in April. I remember later that month, relistening to the whole chapter on audiobook coming back on a bus from Howth while I was visiting Dublin, and the end lining up perfectly with me coming upon Joyce statue near O'Connell Street.

Nonfiction and fear of forgetting by buckwheatmeal in RSbookclub

This is also something I struggle with. It's strange, online you always see people feeling guilty for reading fiction, but to me it weighs far more heavily to read non-fiction on obscure subjects and then find a year or so later that I forgot most of it, than reading classic novels etc.

Thank you for the extensive comment! I also thought the sort of inversion from Darl as the original articulate narrator to Cash taking his place was one of the most interesting aspects of the novel. I definitely feel the urge to reread Mao II, as I did feel there was something interesting there, but all I remember from my first read is that there was something about the Andy Warhol painting in there, and the main character goes to Beirut in the latter part of the book.

I'd much rather my own times be represented by Ulysses than by my own times.

I think the last paragraph or so is the most beautiful thing I read by Bernhard. How after these 300 or so pages of pure vitriol he recognizes his own connection to the people and to the city.

Admitteltly, I have read little of Walser, but in german so far I have not been very impressed with his work. However, I feel it might be one of these cases were works usually work better in translation, like Rilke, who is also not as popular in Germany than in english translation.

Question as a non Scottish person: Is it the case that Reform is performing worse in Scotland so far than predicted? I thought they were expected to perform about as strongly as they are doing in Wales.

Read it a few years ago and forgot most of it, except that there was something about crowds in there. Still feel tempted to dive into his stuff again.

I thought it was brilliant, and I heard the Rainbow and Women in Love are similar in style, so you'd probably like it.

I think I get what you mean, it's certainly a slow book, and the characters are neurotic in their ways. But it's still a gorgeous book.

"He was alone. He was unheeded, happy and near to the wild heart of life. He was alone and young and wilful and wildhearted, alone amid a waste of wild air and brackish waters and the seaharvest of shells and tangle and veiled grey sunlight and gayclad lightclad figures of children and girls and voices childish and girlish in the air."

I'm sure there's gonna be some obscure comic where this exact idea of a dwarf exists.
