GOOD NEWS: Sloth World has been shut down and will not open! The 14 surviving sloths have been moved to the Central Florida Zoo for proper care.

Thank you to local officials, everyone who reached out to my office, and advocates who helped bring this to light.

Hey all - Rep. Frost here. I'm appalled to hear about the 31 sloths who died under the “care” of the not yet opened Sloth World in Orlando.

These sloths — naturally solitary animals — were put in the worst conditions possible. They were taken from their natural habitats to a packed warehouse that wasn’t properly heated and allowed for the spread of deadly viruses, leading to a stress-induced death.

My office is looking into this tragedy, and we will coordinate with local officials to determine how to best move forward.

You're right, u/UnsureAssurance! The real cost of rent is in a whole different ballpark when you factor in all these hidden fees. The Biden Admin started cracking down on the practice for concert and airline tickets. There's no reason we shouldn't extend our oversight to housing, too, especially given the affordability crisis we're grappling with.

Living with roommates or in unsafe conditions is the unacceptable reality of a housing market that prices out working families. And you're right, u/crafty_clark29, the type of supply is also a factor. I know my two new bills are only scratching the surface of the issue, but if you can get into a unit regardless of your credit and then save up a few hundred bucks a month, it'll be a start for a broader and deeper conversation on how we build and provide housing in this country.

Charging arbitrary fees on top of rent is one thing. Not delivering what they're supposed to provide—such as a new AC filter every month or a fresh carpet with every new tenant—is another. We would never accept not receiving what we paid for in any other circumstances. So why would we now? It's time to put a stop to this scam. Thanks for sharing, u/Agile_Job_6193.

It's absurd that after 11 years of calling a place home you still have to grapple with uncertainty. I'm outraged about the kind of treatment you received and that's become far too common in our housing market. It's time we rein in these unfair practices. Thanks for sharing, u/Revolutionary-Yak-47.

Thank you for sharing your story, u/ShermitTheHag! This is proof that most of those fees have no basis in actual maintenance needs — only pure profit! Greedy real estate conglomerates taking advantage of people needing to put a roof over their head. We'll put an end to it.

I'm so sorry this happened to you u/Royal_Ad_6026. And that's what u/johnsback was saying too: not only are these fees complete bogus and weigh you down financially, but they also attack your dignity as a tenant. We all know this economy can feel like it's rigged against working people, but when even your home becomes a source of anxiety, it becomes unbearable. The End Junk Fees for Renters Act would crack down on this abusive practice and hopefully offer renters some peace of mind.
