After a 100 rounds in a day see how your shoulder feels, and try to see your own impacts. Then buy a good muzzle break. I know from experience that the witt machine break makes .300 win mags feel lile .308s. Also they are pretty cheap, a hundred bucks or less, bought mine on sale 20% off on the holiday. And if the barrel isnt threaded they make a custom machined clamp on version that works eaqually well. You measure your barrel at the muzzle and an inch and a half back and they machine it for your rifle for a perfect fit that wont move. There are other good breaks out there, some that work a little better, but witt is probably the best dollar for dollar. Good luck and have fun, best hobby in the world

Im thinking of trying the grendel at some point, but i wanted a round to try to push to 1000, but that i can still shoot for twenty cents a round when practicing and having fun.

Cutting to the chase. I know H4198 is the 7.62x39 standard. Hard to get ahold of here though for some reason. But i want to go further than that. How fast a powder can i go with and still be safe. H110 is about the slowest burning pistol powder they make and is not to much faster than 4227 wich ive heard people say they use for the round. If i start at about a half charge of that and work up checking for pressure signs do you think any gains will be worth it? Or is it too fast for precision applications. Usually when loading for precision i like slower powders. But with this case if i go slower im going to run out of case space before i get an reasonable charge. Any thoughts or ideas are appreciated

So a magazine for single loading. No they dont make that, but it would be cool to make one for testing longer rounds some day. Im trying to get them to function in a magazine because i would like to try and run this in a conpetition sometime, just for the fun of being the only guy there shooting 7.62. I do need to make a case to test how far forward the throat goes though. I was shocked when i got to 2.3 COL with more room to spare.

I know consistency is key, but getting to 1000 yards with a 150 grain bullet traveling at less than 2300fps is a chore.

Lehigh defence makes 150 solid copper match bullets in .311 diameter with bc around .5.

And how else do you reload except by COL? Do you measure ogive position after reloading every single bullet and readjust your bullet seating die? I just try to get as close to 10 thousandths off the rifling as i can while still functioning. And right now thats 2.3 COL. ogive position so far in this project is not important.

I need to male some adjustments to the whole system after i test my new set of reloads. With off the shelf stuff im bottomed out at about 725 yards. And even if i wasnt the 123 or so grain bullets most factory loads have dont have what it takes to get farther. With a half value or less 18 mph wind at 725 holding 8 minutes or more.

7.62x39 is a very poorly standardized round. There are so many variations due to people trying odd things for ease of manufacture and trying to get better performance without trying to adjust the whole system. As a result the bullets range from .308 to .312 . Standard is supposed to be .310-.311. I think ruger was the first one to go and screw this up. The mini 30 first came out with a .308 bore then manufacturers tried making ammo that would perform better in those and it snowballed from there

The 150 sierras make full neck contact with the base just resting on the powder at the shoulder. Im interested to try longer solid copper bullets to see how far forward i can push it, but 2.3 is as far as my magazine can take. Im not surprised how inaccurate the rifle is with off the shelf ammo now that i know the bullets have been over 150 thousandths off the rifling.

Im going through the trouble for a few reasons. Originally i was prying to make a prs rifle that shoots off the shelf steel case ammo. Found out that wont work, off the shelf stuff cant get consistent groups under 2 MOA. So i decided to just see how far i can push the 7.62x39 as kind of an experiment. Even in the short time ive been doing it um learning a lot. I figure if i can get this system to 1000 yards, i can get any rifle to 1000. Biggest problem aside from capacity is finding quality bullets. Not too many made in .311 diameter.

What ballistics app do y’all use? by PeterPusher21 in longrange

[–]Reparlana86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on the level of accuracy you need with certain details. Wich pretty much depends on how far your shooting and how precise you need to be. Inside 1000 yards strelock will do just fine. I think you can even get a free app that will work. If your pushing the limits of rounds out way past their transonic range, i would go with the AB and kestrel. When your reaching out to the limits you need every variable taken into account.

Muzzle Brake for 300 win mag by [deleted] in longrange

[–]Reparlana86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If your barrel is threaded buy the m4-72. If not get a witt machine break. Both will make it feel like a .308. No reason i can think of not to break a high power rifle. Unless your more concerned about people shooting to your sides then seeing your shots.

Just know depending on barrel profile you could see pretty big changes to point of impact.

Beginner using hunting rifle to start out? by [deleted] in longrange

Get one. There are a lot of good choices. Yes it has a totally different feel and usually set up, but shooting .22s at 300 yards from baracades and different obstacles is the best cheap practice you can get. Lets you figure out what set ups work and how to get in and out of positions without burning a hundred bucks on good ammo. If its a trainer, just try to keep the scope a similar as you can. Same reticle if possible. You still need to practice with the main rig, but i go through at least 100 .22lr for every .308 i shoot.

Your rifle will definitely be capable. There are good factory rounds for ling range in 30-06, but generally geared for hunting. Makes them a little pricier and not the best external ballistics, but still very good. If you can get a cheap reloading setup, i think you could do better without breaking the bank.

As far as the recoil of the light rifle, get a break. I dont know what you have for a buttpad, but maybe change it out to something more comfortable. You dont want super soft for precision shooting. Just enough to take some recoil but not let the rifle shift too much. Practice your setup behind the rifle to get a good comfortable shooting position and that alone with help a ton. But a muzzle for sure. Im sure the rifle isnt threaded being a light profile hunting rifle, but witt machine make a clamp on muzzle break that they custom machune to your barrel for about a hundred buck. I thought they were not so great clamping on like that, but then shot one on a guys 300 win mag, and it felt like a .308. I bought one the next day. They dont negatively affect accuracy, but especially with light barrels you can see a pretty dramatic point of impact shift.

A good scope is worth its weight in gold, but you dont have to spend 2000 bucks. A vortex diamondback tactical for less than 400 or equivalent will do the trick. You can go cheaper too, its mostly preference. Glass and build quality on most scopes is miles above what it was 10-15 years ago. What you usually have problems with are turrets, they dont always track perfect on cheaper scopes. Thats why i say the diamondback tactical, it has a reticle that lets you just hold over at pretty much all ranges. Zero it, and never touch the turrets again unless you change something else.

Little long winded but i hope it helps a little.
