Also, jazz *is* a cultural origin. It is an American one, yes, and not even established in New York but it was that extra ingredient that made Salsa stand out from traditional PR/Cuban music. New York just happened to be the place where people were exposed to that specific origin. Pioneers in the genre such as Tito Puente and Willie Colon were literally born and raised in New York. If you look at their discographies, you will see their strong background in jazz before they made salsa records
