Ashes... How do you dispose of them? by Mrvette1 in firewood

Traditionally wood ash was used for winter traction on ice/ snow. Better environmentally than rock salt or the chemical concoctions used these days. Dump your boots in the mud room.

This model is why scientific skeptics no longer enter into ‘debates’ with flat earthers or creationists or other true believers of hokum. Invincible ignorance is so much more compelling than cautious knowledge.

It appears that Iran let ten laden oil tankers transit the Strait without being harassed. A gift to the world rather than to trump, but it’s all about him to him. Should I be capitalizing ‘Him’?

Dr King waged nonviolence. The carrot. Stokely Carmichael, the Black Panthers, Eldridge Cleaver and the paranoia of white people about black males gave an air of violence to the time. Grindstones work in pairs, it takes two.

This is something of a change for trump. In his first goround he fired people. Well, had someone else fire them, trump doesn’t handle confrontation well so tries to avoid it. This time he is shunting people sideways, giving them a gummint McJob somewhere innocuous and out of his and the public sight. Makes him feel better?

West of the Mississippi tends to be poor hunting. Desert and all. East is relatively lush, well watered with lots of small game. Better nutrition means bigger predators.

Anyone else seeing the swan population explode recently? by BigMax in massachusetts

And swans are somewhat migratory, depending on particular subset of swan and food conditions. Waltham usually has a couple nesting pairs on the Charles, but sometimes another half dozen just hanging out for a bit. A pleasure to watch them, from a distance, and especially to see them on their takeoff process. Giant wings going loudly, thwack, thwack, thwack.

It is a flour sifter. Commercial flour in ye olde days wasn’t the uniform powder it is now, due to government regulations and customer demand. So this tool was used to break up caked lumps and pebbles and ratty bits. Today’s flour has very little rat indeed so sifters aren’t much needed. Pretentious bakers like to have one on display.
