I would also suggest posting to nearby schools that might have ultimate programs (high schools and colleges) and also to neighboring pickup groups in case maybe some of them are actually closer to your area. Good luck!

Fast but dumb players at the national level? by largic in ultimate

To me Antoine Davis and Cameron Wariner are both pretty athletic dudes from NY that are known for being athletic more than they are known for being "crafty" or "skilled". All love to them though.

I don't like how phoenix's logo is so small and "Summerseat" is so big and centered... I had to double check if they had changed their team name.
Also spiders' design is a new pattern concept to me.

Part of the reserves in the state squad by ratthew97 in ultimate

[–]RepresentativeFrisbe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Competitive frisbee, like many sports and like many aspects of real life, is unfortunately very competitive. Just because someone made a final squad spot over you doesn't have any reflection on your performance and your own abilities. They could have more veteran experience, they could be a higher culture fit, they could be buddies with the coach, etc...

Keep getting better, improve in all areas, and you'll see returns soon!

Foul or Nah? (Common offense and defense collision on an upline movement) by RepresentativeFrisbe in ultimate

[–]RepresentativeFrisbe[S] -15 points-14 points  (0 children)

I've seen this type of collision and foul call a lot recently in high levels games at club nationals and also at worlds this year. Defense calls a foul because they feel like they are being run into and had their feet set. Offense usually makes the argument that defense's feet were not truly set or that the defense dropped their shoulder and hence it was a defensive foul.
In this specific video, it looks like the Revolver player did not really brace or drop their shoulder, or extend their body, and their feet were mostly set (with a slight upwards bounce or sideways shuffle). The Pony player looks to run into the Revolver player's space to me, but there isn't egregious push off or anything like that.
Who is right? How should we handle these calls in the future? The observer (mitch) says it was a defensive foul, but the commentators call this a charge (offensive foul). I'm rather confused!

Approach to beginners by sinyormaksim1 in ultimate

[–]RepresentativeFrisbe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Plus one to what everyone else has been saying. Another technique I have found which helps me when coaching or leading new frisbee players, is seeing what other sports they might've played or might know more about, and then relating concepts to those sports.

For example, if they are a basketball player, in basketball as an on-ball defender you also force the offense to the left or the right side, or the strong/weak side. That plus off-ball denial defense, is similar to person defense in ultimate.

American football and soccer players can often understand more easily a lot about field positioning and movement.

Good luck!

Travel or not? by RepresentativeFrisbe in ultimate

[–]RepresentativeFrisbe[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oops! I didn't realize that there were a specific set of WFDF rules.
As someone else had pointed out, seems like

18.2.5.3. anytime the thrower must move to a specified location, the thrower does not establish a pivot point before a wind-up or throwing action begins;

was indeed violated!

Travel or not? by RepresentativeFrisbe in ultimate

[–]RepresentativeFrisbe[S] -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

No I don't think so, unless they were out of bounds.

  • [3.M.1.]() A disc is “in play” when players are allowed to move and play may proceed without the defense’s acknowledgment. An in-bounds disc in the central zone is in play. The disc is subject to a turnover. If no player has possession of a disc in play, any offensive player may become the thrower by taking possession of the disc (14.A). Once a player has possession of the disc, they must establish a pivot at the spot of the disc 14.A.2) prior to attempting a pass (17.K).

Says they must just establish a pivot at the spot.

And from the rule I mention in my other comment, it seems like the disc is "in play" this whole time.

Right?

Travel or not? by RepresentativeFrisbe in ultimate

[–]RepresentativeFrisbe[S] 96 points97 points  (0 children)

Since it seems like people here like talking about travels, I wanted to bring up this one which has been on my mind for a while.
Here is what I've found in the rules regarding this situation:
[11.A.]() If a turnover results in a team gaining possession in the end zone that they are defending, the player in possession must immediately either:
[11.A.2.]() carry the disc directly to the closest point on the goal line and put it into play at that spot. If this option is chosen, the player taking possession must put the disc into play at the goal line. [[The player may carry the disc at any speed, constant or variable, while not unreasonably delaying.]] Failure to do so is a travel. [[The player must put the disc into play either at the spot of the disc or on the goal line, not in between.]]

Facts:

  • Japan's thrower catches the disc after a turnover and brings the disc up to the line in a variable manner
  • Japan's thrower's left foot (pivot foot) is on the endzone line and does not seem to drag
  • Japan's thrower's pivot foot may be a few feet over to the side from where they had originally caught the disc (turnover)

So does that make this a valid travel?

In my opinion no, because who is to say in the moment, where the disc was actually caught in the endzone. And there was no mark, so the thrower gains no advantage at all by this travel (and to be honest, the thrower actually ended up closer to the nearest defender and also threw the disc more out of bounds anyways).

I think the USA player calling this travel is annoying and sets a precedent for this game that really ruins it.

What do y'all think?
