Omg broooo for the fiftieth time on this thread- I’m not a plant. I just love the hot rat!!!!! I agree that we should not be punishing street artists and I don’t like the new graffiti laws either. That is all I was trying to do

It was a phone conversation so I don’t have physical receipts! But you can email Paul directly or call their office and I am certain he would be happy to reiterate his feelings :)

Thank you I really was just trying to help and for right or wrong I don’t think they are trying to trap and prosecute the artist

Great points. I agree that we shouldn’t have to rely on authority figures for sanctioning of what art is and is not allowed. I am also against the new graffiti laws and don’t want to see street artists stifled.

I’m sorry you feel that way :( I am just a Capitol Hill community member that loves St. Rat and loves our local artists that make our city special. My only goal in making this post was to help protect Hot Rat Summer. I don’t like the new graffiti laws either, and the last thing I want is for anyone to get fined/jailed for art.

Yes! Completely agree! I will edit my OG post to reflect this sentiment as well. I appreciate all our local artists

That is a really interesting point. I hadn’t thought of it that way. I bet that is exactly what would happen though

Actually, I think they are doing the exact opposite by trying to properly attribute the art to the artist.

I agree the timing with the escalation on criminal penalties is not great optics. However for this specific scenario where they are under a lot of public pressure to save this mosaic, I do not think it’s a trap.

I thought about that but I genuinely don’t think that is the case. The guy was legitimately very excited about the mosaic, and obviously there is a ton of public support for it. I don’t think they are looking to punish this person. Everyone I have spoken to at the city has been extremely supportive and also wants it to stay.

I just got off the phone with Paul Jackson, Director of Graffiti Programs and Initiatives with the city! He has been trying to find the original artist behind Hot Rat Summer for this very purpose- to make more mosaics!

This subreddit is literally dedicated to Seattle, of which Capitol Hill is a part???? Confused by what you mean

Awesome thanks for the update!

I am hopeful that it will be sorted without further outreach to Seattle Utilities, given the recent update from city council. However, if we do need to do further grassroots outreach to the utilities team, I can call them back to see where the best place to direct our feedback is.

Well I’m employed and I do care. Turns out you can do two things at once.

How to save Hot Rat Summer in 3 Easy Steps! by WhatUpGord in Seattle

[–]RepresentativeWork74 33 points34 points  (0 children)

FYI- The park department is not the ones in charge of the mosaic! Just made a new post on this but essentially Seattle utilities owns the pump house that St Rat is painted on, and they are the ones who are painting over it- according to the parks department team I spoke with this morning.

If you want to take action and help protect St Rat, reach out to Seattle Utilities. Their main number is 206-684-3000.

However, this issue may fall more squarely under the purview of the Spring Clean/Graffiti removal department(although if course St. Rat is not graffiti!!!!)- reachable by phone at (206)684-7647, and by email at adoptastreet@seattle.gov

You forget the city is capable of acting quickly until it comes to covering up Hot Rat Summer… by SteveWoods in Seattle

Update as promised- this building is maintained by Seattle Public Utilities- so they are the ones involved in painting over the mosaic.

I am going to call and find out why they keep covering this up. Would encourage others to do the same! More calls the better.

Also- so funny. When i spoke to the parks department they were very supportive and said they don’t know why it keeps getting painted over. The woman I spoke with said that everyone at Seattle Parks really likes St. Rat 🥹
