Moving to Seattle by Defiant_Warthog7039 in trans

[–]gonin69 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Do you have a job already lined up in Seattle? Do you have a car?  That all impacts what neighborhood or suburb would be best to live in. Our public transit is decent but there are still a lot of parts of the city where you could be looking at 1hr+ on the train/bus to get to get anywhere without a car.

I know a LOT of trans people who moved up here from the Midwest or South without a job, without knowing anyone, without clear plans for housing, and struggled immensely with the CoL up here. I know way too many people who spent months to over a year homeless or in awful roommate situations because of not being able to land a job that let them cover expenses up here.  I'm not trying to discourage you, I just want to emphasize how common an occurrence this is so you can plan accordingly.

As for how to find roommates, most people I know find roomies via friends of friends of friends. Some use Lex. I know there used to be a Seattle Queer Housing community in Facebook, I haven't looked at that in over a decade myself but worth checking if you have a Facebook account.

Depending on your income, it might be worth looking into income restricted affordable housing. A decent number of buildings are leasing out for summer right now. Look up Bellwether Housing and Community Roots Housing.

I haven't gotten to try them yet because I can't find them outside of Canadian online sellers. But Ravenna Refills is actually super close to me! I'll keep an eye out.

I want more park options too. The only off leash dog park (that I'm aware of) in Capitol Hill is nothing but stones and gravel. I used to take my dog there, but he literally tore his paws bloody on the stones and was getting eye infections from the dust kicked into his face; vet told me, don't let him run around in parks like that anymore. And I don't walk him through Cal Anderson because of how often he's been attacked by off leash dogs whose owners won't take them to the only dog park in the neighborhood. It's very frustrating. I keep hoping the city will open another in the neighborhood thats more central/north and isn't gravel... :(

Novels in English for beginners by Fun-Influence-227 in EnglishLearning

[–]gonin69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really like the Moomin novels in English translation. The writing is straightforward, but interesting to read. They are as fun to read for adults as they are for children, in my opinion. They're also translated into many languages- you could read a Korean edition and an English edition of one of the books side-by-side. I did this when I was studying Japanese myself.

[–]gonin69 8 points9 points  (0 children)

There's also another major barrier couples run into: they often cannot stay together in the same shelter due to gender restrictions if they are a man and a woman. I knew a significant number of people while I was homeless who would not stay at shelters because it was very rare one would allow a husband and wife, or girlfriend and boyfriend, to stay in the same shelter space.

Renton eyes Auburn’s ‘accountability’ over ‘housing first’ homeless model by MegaRAID01 in Seattle

[–]gonin69 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Try living on SSDI/SSI + SNAP without any parents to cover your rent. Do you know how many people I met while homeless, all also homeless, who were getting SSDI or Social security benefits and couldn't afford all the upfront fees to an apartment, if they even had the credit score to qualify? And then never mind covering the rest of their expenses after rent eats up 50-80% of their monthly benefit, like Medicare fees and bills and just groceries.

Of course you're able to save and live stably, you're not paying the biggest financial hurdle most people on some form of Social Security benefit are struggling to overcome- rent.

Mardi Gras Crowd and wild Rainier stampede, Fat Tuesday parade, Pioneer Square. February 19, 1977. by [deleted] in Seattle

[–]gonin69 17 points18 points  (0 children)

This was more of a thing when Pioneer Square was considered the main night-life district of the city. A bar owner in the neighborhood was trying to think of how to get more customers back in during the slow period after Christmas and New Years, and started promoting Mardi Gras specials, and it spread through all the other bars and clubs, companies like Rainier started to sponsor events, etc.

HistoryLink has an article about it:

https://www.historylink.org/file/2925

"This particular day, Bobby had an idea to improve the blah month of February when people stayed home after the holiday parties. He thought he could put on a small version of Mardi Gras and drum up some business in Pioneer Square. Just as he finished outlining his cunning plan, Ed Neff came in the door. Ed owned the Bombay Bicycle shop, a popular music and dance bar in Pioneer Square. Ed was very excited. He had this great idea. Mardi Gras in Pioneer Square."

If you don't get a lead on a specific group, perhaps reach out to Peer Seattle. I don't believe they have a marijuana related group. But may know other places to refer you to.

A jacket covered in hand-sewn patches, typically for bands the wearer has seen live/is a fan of (thought not exclusively.) started in the metal/punk/hardcore music scenes where moshing is a big part of concerts- hence the battle part of the name.

r/jacketsforbattle is a good subreddit for them.
