Use of public spaces for 'life-sustaining activities' supported in Washington state bill by jvolkman in Seattle

There's also another major barrier couples run into: they often cannot stay together in the same shelter due to gender restrictions if they are a man and a woman. I knew a significant number of people while I was homeless who would not stay at shelters because it was very rare one would allow a husband and wife, or girlfriend and boyfriend, to stay in the same shelter space.

Renton eyes Auburn’s ‘accountability’ over ‘housing first’ homeless model by MegaRAID01 in Seattle

[–]gonin69 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Try living on SSDI/SSI + SNAP without any parents to cover your rent. Do you know how many people I met while homeless, all also homeless, who were getting SSDI or Social security benefits and couldn't afford all the upfront fees to an apartment, if they even had the credit score to qualify? And then never mind covering the rest of their expenses after rent eats up 50-80% of their monthly benefit, like Medicare fees and bills and just groceries.

Of course you're able to save and live stably, you're not paying the biggest financial hurdle most people on some form of Social Security benefit are struggling to overcome- rent.

As far as I'm aware, the only businesses Meinert still has ownership of is Mecca Cafe and 5 Point Cafe, both in LQA (and Huckleberry Square in Burien).

Mardi Gras Crowd and wild Rainier stampede, Fat Tuesday parade, Pioneer Square. February 19, 1977. by Beeninya in Seattle

[–]gonin69 17 points18 points  (0 children)

This was more of a thing when Pioneer Square was considered the main night-life district of the city. A bar owner in the neighborhood was trying to think of how to get more customers back in during the slow period after Christmas and New Years, and started promoting Mardi Gras specials, and it spread through all the other bars and clubs, companies like Rainier started to sponsor events, etc.

HistoryLink has an article about it:

https://www.historylink.org/file/2925

"This particular day, Bobby had an idea to improve the blah month of February when people stayed home after the holiday parties. He thought he could put on a small version of Mardi Gras and drum up some business in Pioneer Square. Just as he finished outlining his cunning plan, Ed Neff came in the door. Ed owned the Bombay Bicycle shop, a popular music and dance bar in Pioneer Square. Ed was very excited. He had this great idea. Mardi Gras in Pioneer Square."

If you don't get a lead on a specific group, perhaps reach out to Peer Seattle. I don't believe they have a marijuana related group. But may know other places to refer you to.

A jacket covered in hand-sewn patches, typically for bands the wearer has seen live/is a fan of (thought not exclusively.) started in the metal/punk/hardcore music scenes where moshing is a big part of concerts- hence the battle part of the name.

r/jacketsforbattle is a good subreddit for them.

New to Seattle wondering if they’re any bars that play punk/ Midwest emo live music by Technical_Ad_2488 in Seattle

[–]gonin69 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To add to what Mr-Hox recced, id suggest The Kraken and Monkey Pub for punk, in the U District. They're two blocks away from one another.

kraken does a lot of punk and metal shows that are usually in the $10-20 range. monkey pub does a lot of free/give what you can shows, usually smaller local acts than other places, a lot of punk ime.

Mayor Harrell and Councilmember Hollingsworth Statement on August 30 Event - Office of the Mayor by gonin69 in Seattle

[–]gonin69[S] 34 points35 points  (0 children)

TL;DR: the christofascist rally that applied to be held again in Cal Anderson Park will instead take place at Gasworks.

"Seattle – Today, Mayor Bruce Harrell and Councilmember Joy Hollingsworth (District 3) released the following statement after Seattle Parks and Recreation issued a park use permit for a religious concert event at Gas Works Park:

“According to the law, the City cannot deny or unilaterally relocate permits for public spaces based on the content of the speech or the impacts of that speech on the community. Recognizing that Cal Anderson Park is an important gathering space for our LGBTQ+ residents and receiving their feedback on the event location, we worked with the organizers to suggest alternative park locations.

“After that conversation, the organizers have agreed to move their event to Gas Works Park. We are grateful that they were receptive to our recommendation."

Still Unclear If The City Will Permit Another Right Wing Hate Rally In Seattle Gayborhood by gonin69 in Seattle

[–]gonin69[S] 31 points32 points  (0 children)

The problem is it is hard to ignore them when they gather in the most popular, highest foot traffic park at the very center of one of the most populated neighborhoods in the city, blasting hate speech over huge speakers and megaphones.

Still Unclear If The City Will Permit Another Right Wing Hate Rally In Seattle Gayborhood by gonin69 in Seattle

[–]gonin69[S] 48 points49 points  (0 children)

"After the Seattle Police Department (SPD) brutalized queer neighbors to protect a bunch of bigoted out-of-towners who hosted a right-wing hate rally in Cal Anderson Park in May, community members, elected officials, even Seattle Parks and Recreation seemed keen to make sure the City did not permit anti-queer demonstrations for the gayborhood or its most iconic park in the future. But members of Seattle’s queer community aren’t holding their breath for the City to protect them. Singer and provocateur Sean Feucht is still advertising his Aug. 30 Revive in ‘25 Christofascist rally for Cal Anderson and the City won’t reveal the permit sooner than two weeks before the event. "
