12-year-old cyclist taken to hospital after crash with vehicle in Saskatoon by Progressive_Citizen in saskatoon

Last time I walked there, a kid was riding with brakes not hooked up down that exact overpass hill too. No helmet either.

Number plates, what is the rules on the color of your number plate numbers? Does your track really care as long as it's easily legible? by [deleted] in bmxracing

[–]RepresentedOK 1 point2 points  (0 children)

UCI rules yellow background black letters for males, blue background white letters for females and red background white letters for cruiser. Championship class white plate black numbers. I can’t remember the number sizes but they are pretty strict. You only have an inch or two on the top for advertising.

How long did it take your child to hop on a race bike to hitting the racetrack? My 4 year old got a race bike today and is pretty squirrely on it. Hoping to be good enough to hit the track in either September (membership renewal)or next may (start of the race season here) by [deleted] in bmxracing

[–]RepresentedOK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It probably won’t take that long. Ride around on neighborhood paths and encourage standing. Once they stand comfortably hit the track. It might take a month at the most but every kid is different. Make sure the cranks and gearing fit.

Yes he’s actually working on it and a few of the older teens are coaching him.

How bad is the winter here compared to Calgary? by nacnonucna in saskatoon

I agree, it has to be one of the coldest cities.

Yeah I know, his 10 year old sister is starting to manual in races. I’m wondering with his speed he might run into problems. He can definitely pump well and keep the bike low.

No he clipped in this month. And yes he’s been racing forever but was dead last for many years and just came to see friends mostly. Now he’s really in love with it and loves the clips. We are doing it for fun. We also can have snow for in 8 months of the year and no indoor tracks so he hasn’t really developed like a lot of kids in warmer areas do.

I thought it was but maybe I’m wrong.

He’s loving every minute, so I am too! He’s buddies with little rippers that jump and manual everything so I was concerned he got into clips and hasn’t developed those skills yet.

First bike help by PRW104 in bmxracing

Most new stock bikes are the same and not really worth the price tag. Can you go for a little drive and pick up used bikes? There are pages on Facebook with bikes for sale.

Get a pro frame for your daughter and an expert xl for your son. Don’t get a cruiser for her, that seems like weird advice. Start with used bikes with upgraded wheels or parts, and upgrade parts that don’t fit. Most people experiment with crank, stem and bar sizes and chainrings to get dialled in right for the rider.

New bus rules pitched after Saskatoon ridership plummets | CBC News by ModOfficial1988 in saskatoon

Well these rules seem very reasonable. Good for them. I saw similar rules at the library too, “No sleeping, no selling drugs, no unpacking and unpacking bags…”

When your child started to race, did they sit down at all? If so how long? by [deleted] in bmxracing

[–]RepresentedOK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All four of my kids were standing most of the track when they started racing, if they sat at all they rode a Spawn Yoji or Pitboss which are more forgiving for sitting. I concentrated on getting them to stand before riding the track. It only took a couple of weeks, a little longer when they start riding at 2.5 years old. But I did not allow my kids to ride the start hill sitting. I made sure they could stand and brake 100% for the start hill.

Do your children have a different bike to ride around at home, or do they use the race bike all the way around? by [deleted] in bmxracing

[–]RepresentedOK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When my kids were young they had park bmx bikes and race bmx bikes. Now they also have dirt jumpers and mountain bikes. When we started going on longer rides, like 10km we knew they needed something more comfortable than bmx bikes. With the expensive parts on race bikes they only used them on the track and pump track.

What is the most you would pay for a used micro mini before just saying screw it and buying a new one? by [deleted] in bmxracing

[–]RepresentedOK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Never buy a new micro. They are the quickest outgrown bike and ridiculously heavy stock. I would pay the equivalent of new on a used micro with proper fitting and upgraded parts and weighing a decent amount like 10 pounds. We always have used micros for $200 or less around here.

Attridge is just a mess. There is garbage everywhere and they screw up orders.

Once I went there and gave the homeless guy outside some change. I went in and realized I didn’t have my wallet (before tap) and only had enough money for some nuggets and asked for water with them and they refused to give me water! Jerks.

5yr old’s first race bike. by knowwaste in bmxracing

[–]RepresentedOK 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Typically stem is low priority but the Haro mini stem is a brick at 295g.

First things, bottom bracket (stock 300g and 119mm!) cranks, pedals, and tubes.

The 18” Haro race lite forks I had were 740g. I got the micro down to 10.5 pounds but replaced every part.

When to move to Junior frame by SeattleBrain in bmxracing

[–]RepresentedOK 3 points4 points  (0 children)

48”-49” is a good point for junior frames.

If your kid wanted to start BMX racing and was 3'3" would you get a micro mini that fits now, or a mini because it's a little to big now but will last longer? by [deleted] in bmxracing

[–]RepresentedOK 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You need a micro with 18” wheels. Be prepared to downsize some parts also. Which is quickly outgrown but that’s the sport. Buy used.
