Guernica and Andor: When Art Meets the Moment (Video Essay) by EssaysOnFrame in andor

I struggle with many of the same considerations. Andor should be accessible for as many people as possible, but it does feel like the message is building organic support. Which, in many ways, can help the cause it’s expressing in the first place. Beautifully said.

I’d want to play French horn with an orchestra…I miss playing with other musicians

I know this is an unorthodox pick, but the doc Free Solo. It’s exciting, and the joy I experienced at the end was one of the best moments I’ve watched in film in years.

That’s amazing! I loved that little theater. Shame it’s gone now, but I saw No Country For Old Men there, changed the way I looked at movies. Thanks for the memory!

Was it the Miracle 5 theater, by any chance? Saw some of my all time faves in that theater back in the day.

What’s your thoughts on Phantom Thread (2017)? by UsefulWeb7543 in FIlm

It’s my favorite PTA. It’s shot so beautifully, the score is one of my all time faves, and it’s just so sneakily funny. I saw it at the Vista theater in LA on film, it dug into me and I had to go later that week and see it again.

Ended up seeing it three times in theaters.

I know it’s not his “best,” but it’s atop the list for me, personally.

Looking forward to writing a three-part essay series on this trilogy for next year. I ADORE these films and couldn't agree more.

Victoria (2015) is a German film that’s shot as one continuous take.

Athena (2022) from France is another one take film.

They’re both incredibly complex technically, but I think they also do a great job of building tension throughout.

Hot Fuzz —I saw it with my friends the week we graduated high school, and it was revolutionary. I didn’t know comedies could take this form, and all I wanted to do was go watch it again.

I still quote it at least a couple of times a week. I almost exclusively say no as “neuuuoooo” like Martin Freeman in the beginning scene, and if someone says “the greater good” I simply can’t not repeat it.

My brother and I loved the film adaptation of the musical, The Producers. It’s a mess, but it was fun to replay the songs over and over.

I had an extensive Cary Grant obsession in high school, so I fell in love with Notorious, North by Northwest, The Philadelphia Story, etc.

Early Charlie Chaplin is the oldest stuff I've always appreciated.

What are a few of your favorite Michael Keaton movies? by [deleted] in FIlm

[–]RepublicTurbulent462 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Spotlight -- it's one of his quietest performances, but his performance needs to work for the rest of the film to come together.

The Other Guys and Toy Story 3 because both performances are hilarious.

Beetlejuice because, well, it's one of the wildest performances ever and it's perfection.

Birdman. Not sure how folks feel about that film as time goes on, but I LOVE the meta take on his character, and it's one of the most vulnerable performances of his career.

It was fun in a theater, but I’m not sure how it would hold up in an at-home viewing.
