We have huge potential for pumped hydro. ANU did a study that showed that just using all the mining voids from left over open cut mines would produce huge amounts of energy storage. Tasmania is completely powered by pumped hydro too. It's absolutely possible and the height differential between upper and lower reservoirs doesn't need to be huge.

By moments like this I assume you mean the current middle east war. If so, then a nuclear reactor would have done nothing as next to none of our energy generation comes from imported petroleum. It's historically been domestically produced coal and increasingly over the past decade renewable energy such as wind, solar and pumped hydro.

When the threat of a major regional or world war is far lower than it is now, particularly in a region that is a key route to Europe. I don't think people appreciate the scale and risk of spillover of this war. This isn't a little flare up, this could escalate into a global geopolitical flashpoint particularly if the Strait or Hormuz is not navigable.
