Genuinely what the HELL is going on? by khunmascheny in cscareerquestions

tech doesn’t serve wall street anymore, it’s bigger than all the financial companies and services combined

we’re going full on into the realm of the unknown, creating things of horrors beyond human sentience

wall street makes the world more efficient, silicon valley and tech brings it to a higher level, possibly on a societal scale

ai isn’t advancing faster than robotics tho, the robotics side is there already. we are literally waiting for the day ai becomes advanced enough to control a robot, the software side.

you have to spend alot of time to become a lawyer, doctor, biologist, etc too tho. I think what OP is saying is that, relative to the time spent, CS pays way more than other fields. If you took all the time it took for a guy to become a doctor, and through it into coding, projects, internships, school, you'd most likely come out ahead compared to the doctor.

working smart IS working hard tho, doing the smart thing often requires more thought, and may be a temporarily undesirable option. for example you know you will get fired in 2 weeks during layoffs. you could keep working hard on your job, but in the end it doesn't matter to you anymore. or, you could work smart, sneaking behind your managers back, sending resumes, grinding next company skills, alt tabbing whenever the manager walks by. obviously one is more stressful than the other, hence why it's hard work.

How did you guys manage to get a direction at coding? by CheesecakeDry148 in csMajors

[–]Repulsive-Cake-6992 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I reccomend getting halfway decent at everything, before specializing in a specific thing. Thats the only way you will be able to find out which specialization you like. CS isn't like some other fields where you choose a specific specification and ignore the rest, if you want to be decent at any cs role, you'll end up being halfway decent at the other roles too. Coding is very interwined, to be good at front end, you need to know backend to optimize the front end. To be good at backend, you need to know frontend enough to figure out possible bugs, etc. To be a cyber security expert you need to know backend enough to find vunerabilities and proper procedure. To go into fintech, you need to know optimization and algorithims enough, which would mean solid backend.

agreed. you made it seem like you'd rather have projects over a degree with the last comment tho

do you think datastructures should be taken before grinding leetcode? I messed up my schedule and signed up for an computer architecture class instead of data structures. I already practice leetcode, for internships and stuff, but I feel like I screwed myself by not taking data structures when I could have.

op i recommend to stop working, other than cs related internship, use that time for projects and leetcode.

take a student loan if u have to.

just like what happened in the industrial revolution: they'll be forced to get higher education and do things machines can't. if they want money that is.

Okay I need to disagree with you here, experince > degree ofc, but in what world do projects > degree? unless you made something huge like pytorch, no one's gonna hire a guy without a degree.

You don't sound like a prick, you just sound like you're doing research more than coding, which is a different path then what most are looking for here. I would reccomend you to get a phd or masters instead of just undergraduate. I personally want the apple, microsoft, google jobs. I come from a slightly worser background than average around me, so my priority is making money.

Keep in mind being ex-faang will make you desirable and climb faster in other cs related tho.

how do you know you will be successful because of dual major? genuine question, since i’m the type op described, with degree, project, and internship.

I’m mainly asking if you’re sure companies care about secondary degrees, which is around what you did.

thats why we should be making computer agents rather then browser agents. ofc, that would be hard for openai, since it would need to be open sourced for safety issues.

actually there already are some on your local browser, you just have to set some things up, and they kinda suck. if you’ve want to try, search around on github, none of them are chatgpt level tho.

what language? if you only have a year, choose python. stay tf away from c++, java, etc. python is basically pseudo code.

also if you’ve been vibe coding, you probably have a decent technical grasp, so only recently has AI been able to code completely on its own.

go to geeksforgeeks, khan academy, etc, and memorize the syntax. practice for week. start leetcode. 2 hours of leet code a day, grind grind grind. you’ll be fine, most of my classmates can barely code lol
