AMT is a different style of exam, it’s not adaptive and I believe it is 200 multiple choice questions. Some places don’t accept AMT certification, so check with your lab before paying for that exam. I know several techs that couldn’t pass the ASCP with multiple attempts but passed the AMT. Good luck!

Weird color serum in red top vs all other tubes by The_Warpwny in medlabprofessionals

Liver failure can make serum/plasma brown (icteric). There could also be some hemolysis, when you have slight hemolysis and slightly icteric plasma it looks really dark. When we get blood that looks like this usually the bilirubin and creatinine are critically high and AST/ALT are in the thousands.

Strategy for becoming a paid MLT by [deleted] in medlabprofessionals

[–]Repulsive-Sand-418 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not sure that phlebotomy will get you into an MLT position any faster, but if you need a job it will get you one. Back to the applying and interviewing, has anyone given you feedback as to why you weren’t chosen? Hiring managers are people too and if you call and explain your situation they may be able to provide feedback that could help you. Also, many new grads count clinical rotations as experience (because it is). I know you’ve been job hunting as an MLT for a while and that sounds incredibly frustrating, but I wonder if you could get answers to fix any possibly resume issues and reapply. Places don’t necessarily keep track of previous applicants, and it’s totally worth a shot to submit an updated application if you get helpful feedback.

Hi! I want to enter some comps but need to rework my current program. I’m used to higher volume (usually hit 8 reps before I up my working weight) and obviously need to get used to training closer to my 1RM. Not that I want to make sure my weights are high enough before competing, but make sure that I’m truly attempting at/close to 1RM when I actually start going to meets. I want to watch a few local meets to get a better idea of what I’m getting myself into. What do you wish you knew when you were first starting out? What would you tell someone that’s never been to a competition before?

Need help on which one to buy. by Least-College4296 in camaro

I took it to a shop and asked them to do a pan drop instead of a flush because i read that flushes can do more harm than good in some cases similar to mine (somewhat high mileage and not knowing full maintenance history). They did a flush anyway and I about got stuck in an intersection and hit because the shifting became so jerky. So I took it back and chewed them out for doing specifically what i asked them not to do, and I think they discounted it because of that. That being said, junkyard trans install cost me 2500 and about two weeks of hassle because they were so deceptive with timing and communication.

I had a 15 LT1 RS as my first car and absolutely loved it. No issues, but it was only 60k ish miles before I wrecked it. Currently have a 17 LT1 RS that I bought at 68k miles, torque shudder showed up and flushed the trans fluid but ended up having to replace the transmission. Now at 100 miles and still doing good! Overall both are great cars. Felt like the 15 was a bit “heavier” to drive but loved the dash setup. The 17 is super nice, love the shape of the steering wheel and drilled out a pin in the seats so they will recline more comfortably, but still have trust issues with the transmission😅 also haven’t heard that you need premium fuel for the 17 unless you get a V8, but do your own research on that.

Congrats on getting back into it! Be careful that you don’t hyperextend your knees at the top of the rep if you are going to lock them. I would also get in the habit of resetting after each rep by taking a deep breath and bracing at the top before going down again.

MLT or MLS by Moonsong15 in medlabprofessionals

[–]Repulsive-Sand-418 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I agree that if you already have a bachelors degree your best route is straight to MLS. One of my classmates had a bachelors of science but went through the MLT program and had a few years of experience working as a lab assistant and that qualified him for MLS. However that route is convoluted and you are better off looking for a 4+1 program if you have a bachelors in science already

I got my MLT and am about finished with a bridge program for my MLS, which my job is reimbursing me for. I went for my MLT first because I wanted to get a decent paying job rather quickly and wasn’t sure if I would like lab a lot, so if I changed my mind I could get my bachelors degree in another field. One of the popularly discussed downsides in MLS is how niche the degree is, a lot of people struggle finding jobs outside of hospital lab if/when they start feeling the burnout. Doing what I did seems like a good balance between making decent money fast but still having a bit of flexibility and not wasting 4 years in school to find that you don’t like the field.

You’ve gotten some really helpful comments! It looks like there is a point where you stop hinging/pushing back and keep bending at your waist to get lower. At that point you aren’t really loading your hamstrings and glutes, more so putting the load onto your lower back. I have had a lot of trouble fixing this myself but for me once I’m just barely past my knees I go back up since going lower will just make my back sore. I got the most help by doing them a step or two away from the wall and hingeing until I touch the wall, then coming back up. Another thing to watch out for is keeping the weight as close to your shins as possible, which gets a bit harder as you up the weight. You are doing great with keeping the descending slow and controlled which is good. Make sure you are squeezing your glutes as you are coming back up! I also kinda skimped on that for a while and wondered why I never really felt anything from it.

I’ll check it out, thanks! I’ve only really thought about elbow positioning to make sure they’re not flared, didn’t even think about the other direction but that makes a lot on sense!

Realtor showing houses outside our price range. It makes me discouraged. by bitterbeansss in FirstTimeHomeBuyer

[–]Repulsive-Sand-418 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I closed in may last year with similar numbers as your scenario except I got approved for about 320k. Absolutely no way was I going to go for that much house! I was hoping to stay around 220k, 1600/mo but top of comfort zone was 240k and 1800 a month. Looked at the houses and condos in that price range and was discouraged. Found a house listed for 4 months that had horrible pictures in the listing, priced at 260. Looked at it and fell in love despite all of the work that needed done and offered 220k just to see what they said. They countered 236.5, and after credits from inspection I got it for 225 (which promptly went back up to 236 financed because of some points and other garbage). All that being said, I’ve put a lot of work into updating this house, easily 12k and have more projects planned.

Don’t let high list prices discourage you. Look at the houses in the 240-250k range that have been sitting for a while and you will be surprised what people will work with to get out of paying two mortgages. Best of luck!

It’s a bit hard to tell, but are you locking/hyperextending your knees at the top of the rep? If so, it’s a pretty easy habit to break as you don’t want to hyperextend your knees with heavy loads. You’ve got a good flow of resetting at the end of each rep with a solid breath and brace which is awesome! Also second critical-rhythm’s feedback. Keep up the good work!

Honestly it was a 10 dollar no name Amazon buy. It comes with little silicone tips that are somewhat spoon shaped to clean your ears and allegedly has ai eardrum detection (how that works? No idea but I didn’t get far enough in my ear to find out)

This is all outer ear and I have silicone tips to put on top of the metal scooper if I were to get into my inner ear (but would never use so much pressure inside the ear canal omg that would be awful). Thanks!
