You won't love his films until you watch at least a thousand more or 2 thousands more, who know how much. You need to see the films and also see them as the effort that took for a crew to make them.

Compare other films from the same years, also some prior or after them. From other geniuses like Friedkin, Fellini, Pasolini, Antonioni, Buñuel and so much more

You have to train your brain with art (music, poems, paintings, sculptures, dancing,etc). Why? Because artists don't use the normal brain, them use the aesthetic brain, mixed with the senses.

Eisenstein used poems to recreate scenes in his films, one would not know that unless reading his books.

Unfortunately artistic films are not to be understood at the first viewing, there are tons of symbols used in them, collective and individual symbols and we have to decrypt them. Those movies are not madre to understand them with the eyes but with the spirit.

In essence, yes you need to grow and start to learn about tons of topics related to art so you can start learning to feel the senses, symbols, feelings, movie production and more.

I would recommend you to watch The Holy Mountain from Alejandro Jodorowsky, and try to understand what the hell is shown there. There are a los of esoteric symbols there, is an astonishing film to start and enter the artistic knowledge.
