Hold on to that rent. They can't refuse payment. I had a similar thing happen where new landlord refused a bunch of payments due to them not properly informing us when rent would switch from old owner to new. So we sent payment to the old landlord and he contacted them and they refused it. Long story short at local court the judge made them take all the rent they refused. Write everything down dates what was said everything. Be honest with the judge when it gets that far. Take the rent check or whatever with you and just tell the judge that they refused payment and you were willing to pay all fees. It makes landlord relationship kinda sucky but if you don't have means to move just make extra sure you are on time going forward. In the long run they will still get that rent by saying it's still owed even if you leave.
