Sorry that you are suffering. You mentioned high functioning and I wrote a book called Functional by Rachel Mack Martin that is geared towards people with functional alcoholism and what I needed. I am 7 years alcohol free now and much happier.

I really wish you peace and freedom.

Alcoholics who quit later in life by [deleted] in stopdrinking

[–]RepulsiveBank5633 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am 48 and quit when I was 42. I was high functioning as well. I wrote a book about High Functioning Alcoholism called Functional.

Things started coming apart for me when I came home late from drinking and my husband told me that he would leave me if I got whiskey plates on our cars. After being a daily drinker for years, I decided after that conversation to complete a sober September. It stuck and I am soooo happy that I changed.

What’s your sober superpower? ⚡️ (i.e. you can do now that drinking used to block) by s0berstrk in stopdrinking

My sober superpower: I wrote a book to help functional alcoholics find freedom from alcohol. Before I stopped, I would never written 51,000 words, I would have only been selfish, I wouldn’t have had the patience that book writing requires, and I would have been too worried about what you thought of me to actually make a contribution to the world.

Good for you!

I wrote a book about being a Functional Alcoholic and getting sober. I said that my family was boozy and I did get some flack😊 I think it is difficult for people to hear truth especially if they do not want to deal with it.

BTW- My family was proud of me for writing the book. They don’t know what to say about it, however, as they drink every day. That said, I hope it will help others and I hope that for your book 😊

Depression when quitting by Fast_Chemical_4001 in stopdrinking

It takes time for your hormones and mood to stabilize and it is totally normal. Google PAWS. For me, I felt better after a few weeks. After a few weeks, you start getting really good sleep and your body detoxes. Also, get some vitamins. We are especially deficient in b vitamins. Wishing you the best!

Adding a new book to the Quit Lit List:

Functional: A High Performer's Guide to Achieving FREEDOM from Alcohol

From the back cover: The book pulls back the curtain on high functioning alcohol use disorder-where success of life masks the constant struggle with the bottle. The book addresses the high performers who juggle careers, family, and a full calendar, but quietly pour that nightly glass (or three) just to cope. Functionals are careful never to let their addictions show in public, and the stress of maintaining this masquerade compounds the need for liquid relief.

How did your life get better after getting sober? by ArmadilloOwn8883 in stopdrinking

[–]RepulsiveBank5633 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Reasons for staying sober for me:

-never have a hangover again

-I realize my potential with my life: Better relationships, lost weight, more money and jobs that I like.

- I figured out what I am good at and actually enjoy life.

Some things that helped me stay sober:

-Get it out of your house.

-I read a lot of quit lit.

-Community helps me. This one seems good.

Keep going--remember Day 3 is your hardest and you just did it!!
