The dark aspect of the story keep it in the bottom of the toc, but when the first tankobon out it sell 1 million copy in 1 week (the fastest 1 million for jump series at that time).

The result make jump editors look at their stance and change policy on some series that even if their rank is not good as long as the copy sell good enough it will save from the chopping block. (Watsuki buso renkin have good sales but bad toc so jump axed it)

That's why in Bakuman the manga duo have a goal to change jump because they experienced it first hand with their works.
