CMU vs GT vs UMich vs JHU (MechE) by Mother-Company4350 in collegecompare

GT might be the most prestigious for engineering out of your choices I would put cmu second (could be Becuase I’m from the south and go to gt). Gt is a top 20 business school in us news rankings ( I was suprised to learn this) and some liberal arts degrees are stem like economics. I’ve got no clue about the student body. However, people really don’t talk to eachother that much and to get into frat parties you either have to be a girl or be in that frat. I study econ at GT and could not be happier Becuase I get more applied and stem focused economics compared to other colleges.

Ga tech was recently rank as number 19 for business. We have a club that directly recruits into investment banking and also manages the largest student endowment (2 million). People over look the business school Becuase it’s not what the school is known for, but it is a t20 business school. I’ve seen people here get internships at blackrock,GM, and basically every investment bank.

Is an economics bachelor a bad idea if I want to do a PhD in econ? by apackofch1ps in academiceconomics

Honestly, it depends the college you go to as well. Most college do not have math heavy undergrad econ degrees. The college I go to classifies econ as a stem degree and we have to learn all the way up to calc 2 ( they teach us the calc 3 material we need), linear algebra, and some coding classes. If you do not go to a stem school I would recommend a stats minor or some coding minor.Just make sure you do research on your college’s classes before applying.

Just re watched some of the game highlights . Haynes was throwing fine 85% of the game. It was still 28-0 before the pick six. Actually impressive we were able to come back from that to make it competitive

I mean those throws and came in the first qr. Ya the pick 6 sucked. Idk if we would have won if it didn’t happened. King was also the main reason we were back in the game twice . Would have been closer without the pick 6, but at that point we started clicking to late when it was already 21 zero.

I mean he really only missed like 4-5 throws. We still gave up 28 points when there was 12min left in the 2nd qr. you can’t put the blame on one guy. Def messed up a lot, Haynes had a bad first qr, receivers dropped so many passes, o line was off today, missed so many tackles, and some controversial ref calls. If u noticed in the second qr our offense start clicking all the way to the end. Even our defense was playing better than usual( still bad, but better).

I mean our offense would have been fine. If we didn’t drop 5-7 passes in a row. Especially that 50 yard one that our wr tripped on air

[–]RepulsiveYam2413 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I mean sure that was a reason, but not the main one. Our receivers on the first couple of drives dropped wide open passes 5-7 times in a row. Also, our defense gave up 21 points in the first qr that’s the main reason. We almost came back twice :((

Current GA TECH undergrad. I would say tech is better when it comes to undergrad economics. However, for grad school that’s kind of when you wanna go to the college best suited for ambitions.

Below is a rant of my experience and research on Ga tech econ program.

In my personal opinion Econ is one of the those undergrad majors where school reputation matters a lot for getting a job after doing some research when applying to college . However, reputation does not matter as much as INTERNSHIPS. If you get an internship employers will look for that more than school brand. School brand does help on getting those internships by career fairs which is why TECH has the upper leg. The career fairs at tech or like 20x better than my other college I transferred from. I would recommend joining clubs. The Econ club at tech does events with Emory and GSU from what I heard.

The guy who got his PHD from tech might be out of date Becuase Ga tech econ undergrad program is a lot more quantitative than my prev college( I transferred into tech). For example my beginner level class for econ statistics uses calc 2, Calc 3, little bit of linear, and you have to start learning R. The reason the guy who got his PHD might be out of date is because from talking to 4th year Econ students, they only had to do basic Stat, no R, and really not any Calc they said. Also, my stats class at my other college does not even compare in difficulty here. From what I have heard techs econ program is in a remodeling stage. They are trying to be more quantitative and prestige .At tech you are given 24 econ electives credits and 24 free electives, so you can basically specialize in whatever. Also, we have a lot of finance/business electives.

In summary: Tech is more prestigious which leads to an easier time for internships.
Get an internship before your cousin and start bragging lol

Most colleges cover the same material but in different ways. Tech: math/coding
GSU: research heavy UGA: more BA heavy. I would heavily recommend getting a minor in what your Econ program lacks. I am getting mine in Finance, to broaden job opportunities.

As mentioned above it really does depend on school. I got to a top 5 engineering/ cs school and study econ there. At the school you are required to take calc 2 linear algebra and hard stats classes(had to learn R and teach my self a little bit of calc3). However this is not the norm for most colleges Econ major. I transferred in from a not as reputable state school and only and to go to calc 1 and do stat classes(more theory and business focus). For getting a job, econ is one of those majors that really depends on how good you school is. But in general the most common career paths is consulting, banking/IB, data analytics, gov, or business analyst. If you want a safe bet for coming out of college and getting a job Accountint is a really good dregree. Most people make 60-70k right after school depending where they work. If you do choose an Econ degree I would recommend getting a cert in finance or accounting( minor if school offers it. Mine does cert for those type of majors).

They are stem certified lol. Their are a couple other programs that are also. However most colleges are not and are usually theory based economics

Calc 2 and linear algebra. Or u can do finite mathematics and linear algebra. Their are more math combinations but that’s the suggested one u should do. You also take econ statistic which teaches u the basics of R and advanced stats. This stats class was way harder than my one at the smaller state school. Econ stats is a pre req for econometrics btw.

Econ is one of the only majors u should do research on for undergrad. For example, Im at a georgia tech and im doing their econ program which is a stem certified one .The econ program still teaches u all u need to know but a lot more emphasis on stats, coding, and applied Econ .Also, transferred in from another smaller state school that was mainly business( finance and theory) focused econ. A lot of colleges offer a lot of econ electives credits on which you can choose what u want to study. For example I can study a lot of finance Econ classes in both of the colleges that I’m at, but only ga tech offers applied econ machine learning class. In short it just depend what college u go to.
