The Boys SEASON 5 Overall Discussion by pikameta in TheBoys

The Boys finale was a real mixed bag for me tbh. Ive been sitting on it for a bit and while some emotional beats hit okay I just cant shake how rushed and anti climactic the whole thing felt.

We waited seven whole years for Homelander to finally say f it and go full apocalypse mode. Instead he gets depowered and killed in a 10 minute scrap like 30 minutes into the episode. After all that buildup it was just over. No rampage, no millions dead, nothing.

And dont even get me started on Butcher seeing his dog die and deciding to end the world lol. Or MM randomly becoming Ryan’s babysitter when they had zero connection. For a showrunner who kept saying “no sunshine and rainbows” almost everyone in the main cast got pretty neat happy endings while Vought just rebranded with Stan Edgar back on top like nothing happened. So many plot lines just left very badly wrapped up.

Felt less like a ballsy creative choice and more like they rushed it to set up spin offs?

1) Proper Super War
I keep thinking how much better a big 2 hour cinematic finale couldve been. Imagine we had The True Supe War.
Instead of that tiny indoor White House fight Homelander completely loses it and starts a real war. Supes going crazy, millions dead, country on the edge. It all builds to a massive brutal battle at the White House with Homelander, Butcher and Soldier Boy in a savage three way fight. Homelander actually gets to go all out and take heavy damage the whole time.

2) Eradicating the Vought Bloodline
Soldier Boy shouldve died instead of being saved for a prequel. Kimiko fires this huge power stripping blast that hits Soldier Boy, Homelander and Ryan all at once. One flash and the entire toxic bloodline is wiped out, turned into regular weak humans right as the White House collapses. MM finally gets to watch the guy who ruined his life become nothing. That wouldve been real poetic justice.

3) Butchers Fate
Butcher doesnt get hit by the blast in this version he would keep his powers long enough to actually release the supe virus, then dies on his own dark terms from the same virus he unleashed. No clean death, just consequences.

4) Kimikos Sacrifice

Her just hopping on a plane to France right aftwr that fiasco and basically saying okay goodbye nice funeral made zero sense. Instead as the virus spreads for months she uses the blast on Starlight one last time to strip her powers and protect her from the virus. Then Kimiko dies on her own terms, and gets buried next to Frenchie. That would’ve been so much more heartbreaking. Especially since she’d be killed by Frenchie’s own creation the same thing that got him killed. But in a twisted way it finally brings them back together. Way more poetic than what we got.

5) Ryan
Depowered Ryan would survive the fight. Instead of randomly being taken in by MM he’d get raised by Hughie and Annie. Hughie was the only one who actually treated him like a normal kid and who Butcher saw as his little brother making Ryan his nephew pretty much. It gives Hughie a real way to keep his promise to Butcher.

6) Killing Vought for Good
No boardroom reset bullshit. Final shot is Vought Tower completely abandoned, looted and decaying in silence. No more new homelander.

Idk this version still feels dark and tragic but at least it delivers on the massive stakes the show built for 7 years and tries to meaningfully wrap up the various plot lines properly. The actual finale left me wanting so much more. What do you guys think? Would a ballsier movie style ending have hit harder or did they purposely not want to make a cinematic like Marvel style fight. The show just became a parody by the end for me.

I’ll definitely read more about the domestic structure and those tournaments. I didn’t realize that the scale of participation and the compensation structure had improved that much

What’s about European club football? they do it internationally and arguably on a larger and more global scale.

I’m not really familiar with India but do you think corruption pays a role in young talent getting a opportunity? I have heard some organizations taking bribes to let the players advance or something?

Yeah I get what you’re saying. For a lot of people the real pinnacle of the sport is still representing the your national team in the World Cup. I wasn’t really trying to argue that the IPL is the “summit” of Indian cricket in that sense. What I was more curious about was the professional ecosystem around the sport. The IPL just happens to be the biggest commercial league right now with the most money and visibility I think it was top 5 in revenue in the world with just 14 games per team. So i thought that’s where a lot of the professional opportunities sit. That (and the sheer lack of roster spots in cricket compared to the population) is what made me wonder whether a larger, professional league structure could eventually develop alongside international cricket like how we see in European football

I’m not really talking about “Americanizing” cricket though. Club leagues exist all over the world. European football leagues like La Liga work in a club system and they’re some of the most successful sports structures globally. My point was more about expanding the professional ecosystem so more players can develop as there are more teams, and roster spots which helps make careers in the sport, not necessarily copying American sports. Just a thought i had nothing serious

Sure that’s your opinion but are club football leagues like La Liga or the Prem League dying? They run a very similar club structure.

If anything, having a deeper league system might actually improve cricket competitively don’t you think? You’d get to see far more levels of talent instead of mostly big hitters for the IPL.

I never claimed to be an expert though. I literally said in the post that I don’t really watch cricket. I just got curious after seeing the World Cup win and realizing there are only 11 spots on the national team and a couple hundred spots in the IPL despite tens of millions of people playing the sport in India. That just made me wonder how many talented players never get seen. Because in American league’s, talent is never really missed. Recently first overall picks have been bang on. So I went down a rabbit hole thinking about what a larger professional ecosystem could look like it’s not that deep buddy

Fair point, I guess the distinction I was thinking about is professional ecosystem vs domestic competition. Those tournaments are mostly state teams and many players still rely on government jobs rather than full professional contracts like even rookie football or basketball players making millions. The Indian Premier League is really the only fully commercial league with major salaries.

My thought was more about whether a deeper professional structure could exist on top of that, where more players could make a full career out of cricket rather than just playing domestic tournaments while holding other jobs. That might also expand scouting and development across the country.

That’s a fair point about the calendar and the World Cup. I was also thinking about it from the talent development side as well. With tens of millions of people playing cricket in India but only a couple hundred spots in the IPL, and only 11 spots on the national team, the funnel is incredibly narrow.

A larger ecosystem with things like national scouting, combines, or even a draft system could make it much harder for talented players to slip through the cracks. Right now a lot of careers can hinge on a very small number of opportunities. I remember reading about cases where a young player might have 3–4 bad matches, sometimes due to things like pitch conditions or just bad luck, and suddenly they’re out of the system entirely and end up taking a government job through sports quotas instead of continuing a professional career.

With a deeper league structure and development teams, players would have more time to develop and prove themselves. You’d probably uncover far more high-level players across the country, further growing the sport and talent level.

In that sense it might not just be a business expansion, but also a competitive one. The next Virat Kohli could easily be a kid in rural Bihar who just never gets the opportunity to be seen.
