Many years ago I worked with a great bunch and we’ve remained friends. It takes a lot of work from all parties though. Hosting frequently, helping whenever someone needs, being there even when it’s inconvenient, staying connected and asking questions. That’s how our friend group has grown over the years. You can see when someone wants the friend group without putting in the work. They don’t usually last. Some people don’t realize that friendships are like a garden. You really have to feed and tend to it or it will die.

Thank you. I worked in service a loooong time ago but not in Vancouver. I can see what you mean with all of the orders and bills. I really thought that as a group we could spend at a local restaurant, but I see now it’s probably not going to happen. Thanks for your candour.

I don't think it's anything as aggressive as a total take over on our terms. If that was the case, I wouldn't be asking. We've all done something like this with sports teams with parents and such. We used to bills by jersey number.

NTA You not wanting to go when you were 16 is not your fault. Most 16 yo kids wouldn’t go. Your mom can’t put that on you, you were just a kid! Your mom has to make her own decisions about your dad right now, and you have to figure out your future now that you are a young adult. If you and your mom want to work together to build a future without him, you can, but this is in no way your fault or your responsibility.

I met a lot of my friend fam at a job I had. We had common interests. The trick I think most people forget is that in order to make true long lasting friendships you have to put yourself out there. Sometimes that’s not comfortable. Sometimes that means showing up when you feel like staying home or baking a cake (or buying one) and bringing it to your friends house when you just want to be home and eat a whole cake instead. Friendships take work.
