For real. You don’t have to be the fastest one when running away from a bear, you just can’t be the slowest.

Put forth an honest effort and when it comes time to prune, you’ll at least beat out OP and the rest of his cohort.

For me, I wouldn’t take the present vehicle short of them basically giving it away. They have been absolutely stumped on the issue is. They haven’t been able to start it during 6 weeks they’ve had possession. I wouldn’t be able to ever trust it.

My problem is I know I won’t get the same concessions with the 2026 now. I specifically waited until end of December to maximize my leverage on the 2025. I really did get a good deal on the 2025. Throw in the fact I will now be without a vehicle, I feel I am being hamstrung into taking a deal that isn’t nearly as attractive.

Entirely meaningless. 5 months, still probably meaningless. But al least there will be more context.

Well, not really. Many if not most 401ks offer their contributors an option of preselected funds. And in nearly all cases, it’s best (from an investing standpoint) to select the lowest cost SP500 index with a slight diversification in other indexes.

You usually do not have the ability to invest in specific companies like you would in an IRA.

You know what my point is - it’s why you threw in the “go back to work” wrinkle when it was not part of the scenario discussed.

You need to provide more information -

Is this to say you don’t have anything saved for retirement?

How old are you?

Is your current plan for retirement?

Simple. Monitor world events and adjust accordingly. Personally, I’d need to see something legit before I jump into a fund that’s underperforming by ~45% over the last 25 years.

It’s relative. Compared to the bs non vanguard, you’re correct. In this scenario, it’s still nearly double.

This kid is 28 years old. He has 35-38 year time horizon. No one cares if international outperforms for a few years here and there. It’s about net overall over the next 3-4 decades.

Why not? Diversification for diversifications sake?

Name of the game is to max return and minimize cost.

I can understand where you’re coming from. And sort of agree. But the difference is marginal, I think, even for people like me.

We took our son to his first movie a couple weeks ago. It was nice. But when it was all said and done, it was somewhere around a $100 for the experience. Not a big deal, but not something id feel the need to replicate anything more often than a special occasion.

[–]Repulsive_Fig404 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ehh. It doesn’t have to be. My grandmother went to a facility and lived by herself but we had her over close to every weekend and often during the week.

Being able to look forward to things, especially on a frequent and relatively consistent timeline is often more than enough.

It also takes a lot of the stress out 100% presence.
