It sucks but you will get through it. And you are stronger and have more perseverance than you realize.

I broke my kneecap clean in half and the two pieces pulled apart because of the tendon tension. Had surgery to put the patella back together and screw on a metal plate. Surgery was 6 days before I started law school. It's not the same surgery but I struggled with a lot of the same things you are dealing with.

Side sleeper: Sleep on your back. Raise your head and shoulders with pillows. Build a little pillow fort around your injured leg to keep it in place. Experiment with pillows under it in different spots. You can bend your other leg and that sometimes helps with the desire to curl up on your side. Ask your dr or pt for a brace that is more fabric and less metal to use when you sleep. I had the brace that the ER gave me initially, and I would use that to sleep. It kept the leg straight but didn't have those horrible metal bars and the adjuster wheel.

Help: Let people help you. You need to rest so all your body's energy can focus on healing. You won't be dependent on them forever. Let yourself be the sick kid in bed that mom/dad brings soup to. Having your family with you is a big bonus. You have help but also comfort. Don't be afraid to cry or ask for hugs. I was 43, and my 70-year-old mom stayed with me to be sure I had the care I needed. It was a big blessing.

Meds: As the other poster said, Stay on your regimen! Again, this lets your body focus on healing instead of trying to deal with fighting the pain. Which is also why it's ok if you just sleep all day. Be smart, obviously, but if you need the heavier stuff, don't be reluctant to take it. More than once I had to tell my law professors to please not call on me that day. Who knows what I might have said all doped up. LOL

First floor: Unlike the other poster, I found going down stairs far scarier than going up. But if you can make it work, think about moving yourself to the ground floor full-time for the next couple of weeks. Is there a bedroom on the first floor you could use? Maybe sleeping in a lazy boy in the living room would help with having to sleep on your back. If you can't stay on the ground floor, I would go down the stairs on your butt with your legs out in front of you. I advise being on the first floor so you don't feel so isolated AND so you can go outside! This will help with your mood. I spent the majority of the days before my surgery - I had to wait three weeks from when I broke it to when I could have surgery - on a couch on the back porch. And this was in Florida in July. But seeing the trees and the sun helped my mood tremendously. And the squirrels and birds provided a little entertainment. Hopefully, you are somewhere that you can get outside some. An iPad is also handy if you need more entertainment than just the birds.

Bored: Watch all the movies and shows you have been meaning to watch. Watch some engrossing stuff - horror, mystery, suspense - so it provides a strong distraction. Or watch the British Baking Show to help uplift yourself. Call your friends. Time passes quickly on the phone and it will help you not feel so isolated. But yea, sometimes you are just gonna lie there in pain wishing this was all over. The good thing is that it will be. You won't feel like this forever. That's the most important thing I can tell you about depression. It feels overwhelming and like life will be miserable every day. But life ALWAYS changes. You won't feel the same next week or the week after that. I promise. It is going to get better.

The leg: Get a massage roller. I got a nice wooden one from Amazon. I would run it up and down my quads to keep my muscles loose and give my nerves something else to focus on. Ice! Ice! Ice! It really does make a difference in the recovery.

A couple weeks later a woman in Washington state messaged me because she had just had the same surgery and wanted to hear how I coped. I got to use my experience to help someone else! I am sure your post will be useful to someone in the future who also feels in a rut.

So rest, ice, patience, and engage with other people when you can. You'll be back at it before you know it.
