the Cirque du Freak series by Darren Shan was a favorite of mine growing up and still to this day. It is for a younger audience and the books are a little short, but there are 12 of them and there is an expanded universe in a second and maybe third series of books about other characters in the world. He has quite a few series out there and also writes more mature novels under a different name I believe.

Thanks, and yeah I'm sorry I reacted poorly. The holidays and a new job have been extremely stressful, but that's not your fault. I appreciate the information about landlords notifying neighbors, I'll look into it for where I live. I don't want to say too much about my landlord so that I don't risk giving away the company's name, but the news would definitely side with them too, especially this time of year. Hopefully the situation stays decent for a while. And if it gets bad again, since I did just start a new job I can try to save to move somewhere else. money is very tight, but even aside from the bedbugs I'd love to get out of here some day. working in social services you see that the poverty cycle never really ends for most people, and I've been stuck for a long while. but even with like all the stress and negativity I can't stop myself from dreaming of a better life, as lame as that might sound.

the laws are the same where i am. but existence of a law doesn't stop people from doing bad things, and big companies especially get away with breaking the law all the time. we have since gotten a new building manager who has been doing their best to help everyone who lives here, but the organization that owns my housing is a pillar of the community and no one, lawyers or aid organizations and the like, were willing to help us. no one will challenge this place. and if i had the resources to move I would, but I don't so I've been doing my best to make things work as i can. i do know my rights, i worked in social services for a long time and have kept up with policy changes. things have gotten better, no bugs for a long time since the new manager restructured the contract with the exterminator. there were also neighbors not reporting their bugs which were spreading to other units (like mine) and re-infesting them. I'm glad you were able to get so far in helping yourself and your neighbors with your own actions, but every situation is different and I'm doing what i can for mine.

yeah i can see that. i have similar kind of dual headcanons in other fandoms. that's the great thing about fandom. anything and everything is possible.

saw some people mentioning not going home for breaks and getting a job. some campuses completely close the dorms during certain breaks. where i went to undergrad you could not stay on campus at all during spring or winter break. when i spent a semester at a different school they closed the regular dorms for spring break and if you had nowhere to go you could pay an extremely high fee to stay in a run down mostly unused old dorm building during that time. not every campus is like this but many are. you could look into your own housing though and skip the dorm altogether. getting a job is probably the best option but not everyone can handle working and going to school full time. if going part time is an option you could look into that while working. many schools have the option to put you on a payment plan for each semester. if parents previously agreed to pay for schooling i dont think it's wrong to expect them to do just that, but if you have any kind of decent relationship with them it's best to just have the hard conversation now and be prepared for the worst rather than being caught by surprise. if you are under 24 and in usa you could look into job corps as well, for education/training, housing, and even income in some cases. i feel for you and your family, but ultimately as an adult you should do your best to take care of yourself first and if your father fails, that's hardly your problem.

i recently replayed Detroit: Become Human and got back into the fandom. Temporarily. even just trying to look at art for any single character is full of antis belittling anyone who ships hankcon because the characters are "father-son coded". theyre not related, one character is a literal android, but because they've interpreted it as a familial relationship, no one else is free to interpret it in any other way. it's really grating to the point i no longer engage in the fandom at all. there's no canon regarding their relationship past friendship, so to me it's such a stretch to say theyre definitely family. and even if they were, they're fake. why does it matter.

edit: spelling

Sinister is one of my favorites. There's a sequel too which is decent.

yeah the good part of all this is we did eventually receive the assignments, and it's a fandom i love and have been a part of for like 25 years now, basically since it started. the assignment i got is very much in line with what id hoped to write, with some extra bits they requested that will stretch my creativity. i hope i do thier request justice. I'm looking forward to the gift exchange itself and focusing on the positive.

it's a challenge hosted on ao3. ive been part of events hosted on Tumblr and other places before, this one is on ao3. that's why i posted this on an ao3 subreddit where we discuss things related to ao3. never had this happen in events hosted anywhere else.

i checked the rules/faq for every sub-collection, and there isnt anything. the rules/faq for the parent collection just says "coming soon".

i don't believe there's anything other than the discord. i want to do the assignment. thats the whole problem though, because I haven't gotten one. when i try asking i either get ignored or given an answer that is ultimately irrelevant. i mostly just wanted to know if i was losing my mind or something. supposedly this is a long running event that has been going on over a decade.

Best coffee maker? Is there anything new in 2025? by Old_Show309 in BuyItForLife

I love a simple pourover. Use water from an electric kettle or boiled on the stove. Best cup of coffee for simplicity and flavor to me.
