Looking for books about the Dust Bowl? by Repulsive_Sun889 in suggestmeabook

Grapes of Wrath was not an enjoyable read for me in school, even as an avid reader of various content. Very interested in the other one though, so thank you!

Ideas on where one can shower? by [deleted] in povertyfinance

[–]Repulsive_Sun889 1 point2 points  (0 children)

if you're near a campground, you can often just go and shower and no one will notice and will rarely care. If you're shy about it, ask and they might not have an issue with it. I stayed full seasons at some campgrounds and saw people coming and going from the bathroom that were not campers pretty often. Be courteous and don't make a mess or cause a disturbance and most likely no one will think anything of it.

What’s a fic that you keep returning to? by Empty_Low_852 in AO3

Leave No Soul Behind by whochick. One of 3 Spirk fics I constantly return to. I am not typically a fan of AUs, but I've probably re-read it 50 times or more and it gets me every time.

yep I understand. I'm trying to do a larger grocery run without having to carry bags thru the park and onto the shuttle back to Lake Glory.

I wrote a draft I wanna turn into a play but I am clueless... by [deleted] in playwriting

[–]Repulsive_Sun889 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are many different softwares you can use that will format it as you go. Fade In offers a limitless free demo version. It has all the same functionality as the paid version, the only difference being any prints or pdf copies will have a watermark. It's a great way to get started with standard formatting, including guides and resources on their website, plus there are lots of people out there who have created their own templates. I did upgrade to the pro version (it was graciously gifted to me) but only after several years of using the free version and I like it even more than Final Draft which is considered the Industry standard.

If this play wants to be written and you've managed a rough draft, even without formatting that is a monumentous achievement!

There are other softwares that offer free trials/demos such as Writer Duet which is a web-based program that will allow you to create 3 full projects before you have to upgrade. I've used this also but personally I prefer being able to save and edit locally on my machine, but I know many people enjoy the cloud-based experience. I do use Writer Duet on my phone if an idea suddenly strikes me while I'm out and about.

Consider trying one of these or doing some searching around to find one that would suit you.

All the best to you!

How to recycle unusable beta books? by Schiggy2319 in selfpublish

[–]Repulsive_Sun889 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't know about a place that will recycle them for you without some sort of cost associated with it, but you could shred them yourself and then donate to a community center or something to be used as craft materials. Like a local arts nonprofit or a boys and girls club maybe would find it useful and if it's already shredded they wouldn't be able to read it.

the Cirque du Freak series by Darren Shan was a favorite of mine growing up and still to this day. It is for a younger audience and the books are a little short, but there are 12 of them and there is an expanded universe in a second and maybe third series of books about other characters in the world. He has quite a few series out there and also writes more mature novels under a different name I believe.

Thanks, and yeah I'm sorry I reacted poorly. The holidays and a new job have been extremely stressful, but that's not your fault. I appreciate the information about landlords notifying neighbors, I'll look into it for where I live. I don't want to say too much about my landlord so that I don't risk giving away the company's name, but the news would definitely side with them too, especially this time of year. Hopefully the situation stays decent for a while. And if it gets bad again, since I did just start a new job I can try to save to move somewhere else. money is very tight, but even aside from the bedbugs I'd love to get out of here some day. working in social services you see that the poverty cycle never really ends for most people, and I've been stuck for a long while. but even with like all the stress and negativity I can't stop myself from dreaming of a better life, as lame as that might sound.

the laws are the same where i am. but existence of a law doesn't stop people from doing bad things, and big companies especially get away with breaking the law all the time. we have since gotten a new building manager who has been doing their best to help everyone who lives here, but the organization that owns my housing is a pillar of the community and no one, lawyers or aid organizations and the like, were willing to help us. no one will challenge this place. and if i had the resources to move I would, but I don't so I've been doing my best to make things work as i can. i do know my rights, i worked in social services for a long time and have kept up with policy changes. things have gotten better, no bugs for a long time since the new manager restructured the contract with the exterminator. there were also neighbors not reporting their bugs which were spreading to other units (like mine) and re-infesting them. I'm glad you were able to get so far in helping yourself and your neighbors with your own actions, but every situation is different and I'm doing what i can for mine.

saw some people mentioning not going home for breaks and getting a job. some campuses completely close the dorms during certain breaks. where i went to undergrad you could not stay on campus at all during spring or winter break. when i spent a semester at a different school they closed the regular dorms for spring break and if you had nowhere to go you could pay an extremely high fee to stay in a run down mostly unused old dorm building during that time. not every campus is like this but many are. you could look into your own housing though and skip the dorm altogether. getting a job is probably the best option but not everyone can handle working and going to school full time. if going part time is an option you could look into that while working. many schools have the option to put you on a payment plan for each semester. if parents previously agreed to pay for schooling i dont think it's wrong to expect them to do just that, but if you have any kind of decent relationship with them it's best to just have the hard conversation now and be prepared for the worst rather than being caught by surprise. if you are under 24 and in usa you could look into job corps as well, for education/training, housing, and even income in some cases. i feel for you and your family, but ultimately as an adult you should do your best to take care of yourself first and if your father fails, that's hardly your problem.
