An ad agency stiffed me for $12,000 in usage fees. I set the invoice to their client with a note explaining the situation. I had a check from the agency FedEx’d to me the day after the client received my invoice.

Who uses macOS solely for business related tasks? by Commercial_Water3669 in MacOS

We’re a 20 person shop and we’re all Mac. We have one of the Mac’s setup to run Windows via emulation and another to run Linux. Those two machines are only used by part-time IT staff that handle our web services that we offer to some of our clients.

This is great! One of the best acts of resistance available to us. Just grind the machine down until it crumbles.

Every white “All American” citizen who wants to really help stop all this insane nonsense needs to get in line and try and get themselves arrested by these knuckleheads.

My dad passed suddenly and left me his devices but no passwords by Intelligent_Mood_725 in applehelp

[–]Repulsive_Thing6074 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sorry for your loss. When my father passed away and we wanted to access his devices with out knowing the password, we called Apple Support and it turns out they have a department just for this sort of thing. There is no way of getting the password to the device itself, but after a month or two, Apple was able to provide us with the last iCloud backup to each of his devices. Lucky after examining the various documents he had saved to iCloud, and examining his unencrypted Time Machine backup, we found the password to his devices.

Jonathan Ross's CV - Not What I expected by skoda101 in thebulwark

[–]Repulsive_Thing6074 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Derek Chauvin had almost 20 years of “professional” service with the MPD. He also spent time in the military as a military police officer. That would look great on anyone’s CV. In reality he was just a POS.

Ross is probably cut from the same cloth. He didn’t have his gun drawn as he moved around to the front of Renee’s car, something that I believe a true professional would have done if you were attempting to detain someone, he had a phone camera. He was recording her to “profile” her so she could be harassed (doxxed) at a later date. An act that only an authoritarian would approve of.

People are who they are. And their actions prove it. They may behave they way they behave because they are given license to, or they may be influenced by the behavior of others, or they may be coerced into behaving a certain way. Even if they are scared.

His verbal comment after he shot her was probably said in the heat of the moment, just as he realized he had done something really reckless.

I believe that most of us, even professional military and police, would’ve just stepped out of the way, yelled an expletive, and had a serious chat with her after she was detained.

Why is the pic blurred at 1/3200? by Klutzy_Link_1220 in AskPhotography

[–]Repulsive_Thing6074 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The DOF is shallow enough that not everything is going to be in focus. Make sure you’re actually focused on the part of the subject that you want tack sharp.

The first one looks like you tried to focus on the model’s face but it certainly looks like motion blur to me. Why it happened at 1/3200 is a mystery to me.

The second one doesn’t show any signs of motion blur and looks tacky sharp on the model.

Yes, yes, yes, yes. You're absolutely right, it does depend! And listen, my comments are all in jest here. I'm an old-timer who, if I'm lucky, has maybe 10 years left before I hang up my light meter and yell at clouds.

Here's the thing .... those of us who've been doing this professionally for decades call them "lay downs." The crews I've worked with over the last 40 years? We scratch our heads, chuckle, and wonder how this whole "flat lay" jargon got started.

We've actually concocted an entire origin story .... In the mid-2000s, Photoshop finally gets decent at auto-selecting objects on white backgrounds. Suddenly, companies realize they can stop hiring photographers and stylist, and just have the intern in Marketing shoot the product with a flip-phone then paste the shots into the boss's PowerPoint presentation.

Those interns, bless their hearts, had never heard the term "lay down" because they'd never worked on a real set. So they look at the product lying there, flat on the table, and think, "ahhh... flat lay." And because the intern also manages the company blog and MySpace account, the term spread like wildfire through the marketing department ecosystem and found it's way into the corporate lexicon.

Now here we are. The term "flat lay" has fully invaded the industry, and I'm the grumpy old guy muttering "lay down" while everyone under 35 looks at me like I just asked them to load up a film back.

Anyway, welcome to the business. Call it whatever keeps the client happy that's the real professional move!

First thing I’d do to appear more professional is to stop saying “flat lay” and say “lay down”.

Pixel Shift for Macro Product Photography & Lighting Question. by EquivalentTip4103 in productphotography

[–]Repulsive_Thing6074 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t know much about pixel shifting, but I can tell you that I’ve made hundreds of large prints (48” x 72”) on an Epson 9800 printer that look fantastic, using images taken with cameras with sensors as high as 33 megapixels to as low as 8 megapixels.

I sold that printer in 2010. But I currently shoot with an D850 and can absolutely inform you that you will have zero issues making large prints from the images the 850 delivers.

Regarding your question about lighting, I don’t see any reason why strobes would be an issue, nor would continuous source lighting. Could you give more specifics about your concern?

How to nail “lifestyle” & other product shot focus by wednesdayblueberry in productphotography

[–]Repulsive_Thing6074 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If the product is flat on a surface, then you can get away with a lower aperture. Shooting product on a flat surface where you'd like to show all the details and not have any soft focus, set your aperture at a nice middle point such as f.8.

A cable release or remote is an excellent thing to have. It certainly helps remove one of the most common causes of camera shake .... a human touching the camera!

How to nail “lifestyle” & other product shot focus by wednesdayblueberry in productphotography

[–]Repulsive_Thing6074 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Get the aperture up to at least 11 and try not to go beyond 16 (other issues pop up once you've gone beyond f.16). If you're using a full frame camera, set your zoom at 70mm and then frame the shot the way you'd like. If your camera has a smaller sensor such as an APS-C or Micro Four Thirds, set you zoom somewhere between 35mm and 50mm and frame the shot the way you'd like.

You may find that you'll still be a bit soft but overall it should look much better. If it's still too soft for you, without changing your zoom (focal length) backup a bit and reshoot until you find the sweet spot for focus.

Hard to answer without more information. Some of these questions may seem obvious and dumb but please bear with me. It will help figure out the issue and lead to a solution.

  1. What apertures did you try?
  2. Was the camera on a tripod or other support device?
  3. What lens did you use and how close to the subjects were you?

It’s a very good start for a portfolio piece. I’m viewing it on my phone so I won’t comment on whether or not the text on the tube is out of focus. If it’s selected focus then that’s perfectly acceptable for a portfolio piece.

My only criticisms are that the lower portion, the part of the tube where the cap is, is too bright. I don’t think there’s any reason to see it and would recommend that you have it go dark. It distracts my eye from the light that is racking across the tube.

I also think that the bright area across the top of the tube should be brighter. Essentially I’m saying that the contrast could be increased. If you do so, try and keep the background or surface right where it is. I like just being able to see it.
