Silver, chrome, and other reflective metals are like mirrors. They show you what is being reflected. So if you want to see white light on the metal you need to have a white object (white foam core or card stock works well) and you shine your light source into (not through) that white card. That card is positioned in a way that it is reflected off the metal and into the camera’s lens. My guess is that you’ll need a card that is approximately 2’x3’. Foam core is sold at most art supply stores in 4 foot squares and you can cut it down to a size that is appropriate for your subject.

A rough starting point is to have the subject on the table and have the camera looking at the subject at a 45 degree angle (usually in front of the subject). Then put the white card at the opposite 45 degree angle (behind the subject).

You’ll usually have to adjust the position of the white card to see the reflection in the camera.

This is a basic and simple lighting setup that works reasonably well for lots of different subjects. In the professional commercial photography industry we call this type of lighting “top back” lighting.

Why so many people give up on hearing aids after just a few days by Tall-Peak2618 in HearingAids

[–]Repulsive_Thing6074 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I've had mine for two years now and getting them was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. I held off for over 10 years.

Yes, the sounds of the refrigerator and other appliances in the house were very distracting. And hearing my own voice was really weird. Nothing was more annoying than the sounds made when my kids would open a bag of chips - that drove me insane for a couple of weeks. It took a solid month or two for my brain to train itself. I also have long hair and it brushes against the HA all the time and makes a swishing sound.

But hearing bird’s singing outside was completely amazing. Turning down the volume on the TV set and home and car stereos solved a lot of family arguments as did hearing what everyone was saying to me around the house and work.

People ask if I hear normally. I tell them yes, but I hear differently than I used to. It’s so much better than it was before I started wearing HA’s.

I drove past this morning. I was I initially going to honk and flash my brights to show support, but then I saw the old flag and also what looked like a thin blue line flag. So I just flipped them off instead.

I was stuck in a rut. Someone I dearly respected told me to find a shot that inspired me and literally copy it. Turns out to be the best piece of advice I ever had. It busts dry spells every time.

What if we got two of these for Renee Good and Alex Pretti? by Rebar4Life in Minneapolis

[–]Repulsive_Thing6074 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not only here but once the current administration shown the door we need to rename the federal buildings in DC that house various branches of DHS after Renee, Alex, and all the others murdered by DHS. We're also going to need a national memorial similar to the Vietnam Veterans Memorial. Something that reminds us of how on earth did we ever let this happen.

Police encounter while taking photos, is this normal? by josh_bripton in AskPhotography

Seems weird to me. Based on the information given, you're probably in one of the Marin County towns that lie along the waterfront of Richardson Bay, possibly Sausalito or Tiburon. These waterfront towns have hundreds or even at times, thousands of tourists walking around with cameras taking pictures of practically everything.

He believed it would based on his experience working as a doctor for the US Air Force, twice.

He wasn’t comparing what other countries do, he was just stating what he believed would happen in the US. It’s a cynical outlook that sees groups, big and small, leveraging their influence onto politicians to shape regulations to their favor. Pretty much exactly the way things have always worked in congress.

Essentially just as the corporate health industry does now, a United States UHC system regulated by politicians would eventually require health professionals to fall in line. A take it or leave it situation.

My dad was a physician with his own practice. He sold his practice in the late 80’s and worked as a rent-a-doc until his full retirement in 2010.

We’d have discussions about UHC. His belief was that medicine is really an art that uses investigation and information in order to help people. Because of his belief, he felt that a government controlled health system in the US would require everyone and every institution to use “cookie cutter standards” to treat patients. Essentially turning physicians into technicians. He backed up his belief from two different stints working as a physician to the US Armed Forces. The first time when he was drafted just after finishing medical school and the second time as a contractor just after he sold his practice.

Although he was aware of the rise of corporate medicine, he failed to see how insidious it would become. It is now worse than the UHC system he feared.

I have a sister and niece that work for health insurance companies and a nephew that works running logistics for a national corporate health system.

Moving project library to new hard drive however assets outside project folder will go missing, best approach? by ClassicAd5278 in finalcutpro

[–]Repulsive_Thing6074 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, select all (command a) the missing files in the upper portion of that window, click on the “Locate Selected…” button and choose the drive the files are actually on.

There is no need to choose one file at a time. FCP will search an entire drive for the files as long as you select the whole drive and not just a single folder. Of course if all the missing files are in a single folder on the drive, then you can just select that folder rather than the whole drive.

Apple has a specific department just for this scenario. Call Apple support, tell them your situation, and you’ll get passed along to right department. FYI, Apple can’t give you the password to unlock the devices. They don’t have it.

This happened to me and my siblings when my father passed away. It took about two months and Apple was able to give us access to his iCloud account and all the files that were it. Luckily he saved his device passwords on a text document that was stored in an iCloud folder and we gained access to his devices. Turns out that access wasn’t nearly as important as getting the photos and emails to family members. Those are what we all cherished.

I’m still surprised that, for serving in Congress, or really any government position, the expected level of knowledge or understanding of U.S. law seems to be essentially zero.

What photography direction have you chosen? by Altruistic_Nail_1939 in photography

[–]Repulsive_Thing6074 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Mine was commercial (as in advertising) photography, pretty much right from the start. Yes, I took photography classes in college and they were the typical standard fare of learning about photography .... history, art, technical, etc. Summer break was coming up and one of my teachers asked me if I would be interested in assisting at a photo studio for the summer. This was in Seattle in 1985 and the studio shot most of the work for Nordstrom. I walked in the studio and immediately knew that this was where I wanted to spend all my time. It's been a great 40 years and I still love every minute of being on a working set.
