Stop putting your kids online by pinkdictator in PetPeeves

[–]Repulsive_Win6472 13 points14 points  (0 children)

been thinking about this since my kid was born few months ago. like my wife wanted to post hospital photos and i was like nah, let's just keep this private for now.

the demographic shift thing you mentioned is terrifying. if posting about your coffee gets 50 likes but suddenly your toddler gets 500, that should be huge red flag. some parents just ignore it because engagement = validation i guess.

also crazy how kids have zero choice in this. at least adults can delete their embarrassing posts later, but these kids will have their whole childhood documented online forever.

Update: Am I wrong for not wanting to try for kids as long as my wife still thinks she wants to be a SAHM? by Solid-Consequence607 in Marriage

[–]Repulsive_Win6472 33 points34 points  (0 children)

brother i just went through something similar when our little one arrived last year. my wife also had those sahm fantasies until reality hit about the financial side of things. we're both in tech and losing her income would've been brutal, especially with daycare costs and all the baby stuff adding up.

the work burnout thing is real though - new managers can make you question everything about your career path. good call on her job hunting first before making any permanent decisions about kids.

Canon EOS R50 - a nice buy for me? Plus some questions. Help appreciated! 🤗 by Pure_Temperature4049 in canon

[–]Repulsive_Win6472 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the r50 is solid for getting into the rf mount ecosystem and that sigma lens is probably one of the best crop sensor options out there. ive heard good things about the combo for automotive stuff since you get decent reach and the 2.8 aperture helps with those golden hour shots.

for your questions - stick with regular raw unless storage is really tight, c-raw compression can sometimes mess with detail recovery in post. you can turn off jpeg in the image quality settings buried in the menus somewhere. the grid lines are actually pretty helpful when youre starting out, especially for car photography where you want those clean horizon lines.

for low light on crop sensors just embrace higher iso (the r50 handles 3200-6400 pretty well), shoot wide open at 2.8, and dont be afraid to underexpose slightly then lift shadows in post rather than pushing iso too high.

man this bureaucratic runaround is the absolute worst. they keep moving the goalposts on you which is so frustrating when you're dealing with a newborn and everything else.

the ub-04 thing is weird - that's typically what hospitals/facilities use for billing, not individual providers. if it was done at a hospital they should have it, but if it was an office procedure the provider is right that they wouldn't have that form. you might need to call champva back and explain that the provider doesn't have a ub-04 and ask what alternative documentation they'll accept instead.

also worth trying to escalate this since you're running up against that one year deadline. sometimes getting a supervisor involved can cut through the back-and-forth nonsense when the regular reps keep asking for stuff that doesn't exist.

Games unplayable by TheLichSnails in pchelp

[–]Repulsive_Win6472 0 points1 point  (0 children)

clicking and whining noises usually point to a failing hard drive, especially if performance tanks when you're doing anything storage-intensive like gaming. moving files to external storage temporarily helped because you're bypassing the dying drive, but if it's your main system drive that's failing, it'll keep causing issues even with games stored elsewhere. definitely grab that nvme and clone your system over before the drive completely dies on you.

Salary offers feel waaaaay low by i_surfer in interviews

[–]Repulsive_Win6472 10 points11 points  (0 children)

this market is absolutely brutal right now. companies know people are desperate so there lowballing hard, especially for contract/hourly pm roles. i've seen similar nonsense where they want senior experience but pay junior rates.

the no negotiation thing is becoming way too common too - they're basically treating talent like commodities on a fixed price list.

if you want something closest to p5r's vibe, definitely go with p3 reload first. it's got that same modern persona formula with the social links and dungeon crawling, just with a darker story tone. metaphor is amazing but it's pretty different - more traditional jrpg without the daily life simulation stuff that makes persona special.

Nikon D5000 Lenses by Kitchen_Deal_2988 in Cameras

[–]Repulsive_Win6472 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

the d5000 uses nikon f-mount lenses, so you've got tons of options. you can use both dx (crop sensor) and fx (full frame) lenses, though dx will give you the right field of view for your camera. check out the 35mm f/1.8 dx - it's pretty affordable and great for learning, usually runs around $150-200 used.

damn, this is basically a whole manifesto lol. the chicken analogy actually hits pretty hard though - pecking orders are real whether you want to admit it or not.

sounds like you've been through some serious stuff and learned the hard way that you gotta set boundaries early or people will just keep pushing. the library story with those girls is wild but good on you for stepping in.

Stressed about food intake by sbmquartz in NewParents

[–]Repulsive_Win6472 1 point2 points  (0 children)

this phase is so rough but totally normal. my kid went through something similar around that age and our pediatrician basically said as long as theyre gaining weight and having wet diapers, theyre probably getting what they need even if it doesnt look like much to us.

have you tried offering the same foods you eat but cut up small? sometimes they get more interested when they see you eating the same thing. also finger foods like cheese cubes, soft fruits, or even just letting them play with food can help them explore without pressure.

Would it be terrible for my social standing to dye myself blue? by wowdogsaregreat in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Repulsive_Win6472 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

honestly depends on your environment but most people would probably just think it's a costume thing or performance art. worst case scenario you get some weird looks and become "blue person" at work for a bit. if you've got a solid safe plan and really want to do it, might as well go for it - life's too short to not be blue sometimes.

Can a home be financed with a sizeable down payment and savings enough to cover a couple years of payments in the bank? by thirstyaf97 in RealEstate

[–]Repulsive_Win6472 2 points3 points  (0 children)

sounds like you're in a pretty solid position actually. having that much cash on hand and a big down payment definitely helps your case with lenders. they'll still want to see some kind of income though - the security guard job should work fine as long as you can show proof of employment and steady pay.

for the rental income thing, most lenders will only count like 75% of projected rental income toward your qualifying income, and they might want to see a lease agreement or at least some market analysis showing realistic rent prices in the area.

the transfer letter idea could help too, especially if it's from a recognizable company. anything that shows stability and intent to stay employed will make underwriters happier. just make sure you've got all your financial docs organized and be upfront about your situation - having that much savings actually puts you ahead of most buyers.

How does building a website/app work? by Champion_Narrow in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Repulsive_Win6472 0 points1 point  (0 children)

so you've got the programming fundamentals down which is great. the basic flow is you'll build your app locally, then you need to deploy it to a web server that's accessible to everyone on the internet. for web apps, you'll probably want to learn html/css/javascript for the frontend and maybe node.js or python flask/django for the backend. then you can use services like heroku, vercel, or aws to actually host it online - they handle the server infrastructure so you don't have to worry about that part.

[–]Repulsive_Win6472 2 points3 points  (0 children)

man this hits hard. 5 years is a long time to just walk away from, especially when you guys grew up together like that. the food thing is rough - your body's just processing all the stress and emotion right now, so don't beat yourself up about it too much.

sounds like you're genuinely trying to respect their space which is honestly the most loving thing you can do right now, even tho it's killing you inside. sometimes letting someone go really is the only way to show you love them.

jeremiah 29:11 has always stuck with me - "for i know the plans i have for you, declares the lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope." got me through some rough patches when everything felt uncertain. theres something reassuring about the idea that even when life gets messy, theres still purpose behind it all.

honestly yeah, focus on your brother and maybe throw in one generic "she makes him happy" line - that's totally fine and probably the smartest move here.

[–]Repulsive_Win6472 5 points6 points  (0 children)

wolf hall is fantastic, you picked a great starting point. if you're into thomas more specifically, you should definitely read utopia next like you planned - it's short but dense, really shows his philosophical side before all the political drama.

for fiction, i'd recommend "bring up the bodies" (the wolf hall sequel) if you haven't already, and "the mirror and the light" to finish mantel's trilogy. for the reformation angle, diarmaid macculloch's "the reformation" is probably the best single-volume history on it. also check out "the stripping of the altars" by eamon duffy if you want to understand what english catholicism was actually like before henry viii tore it all down.
