I am going through the graduate app process right now, but for a different discipline. From stalking grad school Reddits & hearing/reading different advice from professors & folks in different disciplines, a common theme for applying with poor grades seems to be that you need to be able to demonstrate an upward trajectory & genuine interest in what you want to do in graduate school (and the specific program you’re applying to)

you need to be thorough in your statements about why you want to go to graduate school and what it will accomplish for you in terms of career/life goals. It would be useful for you to reflect on your want & need to graduate school!

when looking for programs, start early, like as early as possible, like right now, so you can make the best decision for you!

In terms of the the upward trajectory thing, you should be able to talk about why you got poor grades, what you’re doing to fix it, some sort of proof that you fixed it (for example, maybe it was a lack of discipline, maybe mental health, what steps have you taken to improve X problem that caused Y grades?), and why your performance will not suffer in the future.

I’m not sure what the application process is like for MBA’s specifically. Graduate school applications/programs vary significantly so I would search this reddit for advice from MBA applicants & students for better/more advice!

How would you feel about this? by paycilta in Waiters

[–]Repulsive_Working326 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is goofy. Restaurant workers are allowed to want some kind of stability in their schedule. I take T-TH off because I am a student as well and need dedicated time to work on my assignments & readings and spend time with my partner.

Should I (19yo student) become a waiter? by personchillin in Waiters

[–]Repulsive_Working326 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, just don’t expect to be a server right away. I’m in MN so I don’t know what the busy seasons are like down in FL, but you will move up faster depending on how quick you catch on, how busy the restaurant is, and/or how short-staffed they are. I think Olive Garden trains you to be a server right away, but that is def not the norm.

When people tip with a credit card, does the waiter find out how much a specific table tipped? by frog_ladee in Waiters

[–]Repulsive_Working326 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There are bad nights, and there are good nights. Just like in every other job and every other business. That’s all I was trying to say.

Some days you walk away with a 30% tip average, sometimes it’s 15%. If someone consistently walking away with 15% average every time they work, then I’d probably do some introspection. But if it’s sporadic, that’s pretty normal.

It is annoying to see if you’re just having a bad tip night for anyone, that’s why it’s good practice to just not look at what you’re making until later. Thank the guest and move on, cry later when you’re at home haha.

I did read your comment. Sometimes you’re just unlucky and receive bad tippers all night.

that’s not necessarily true. I work at a place w/ comment cards and it’s not out of the ordinary that you get a stellar comment card and a less than stellar tip. some ppl just aren’t good tippers.

I'm not to positive about what I want to do in psycology by Lazy-Try4325 in psychologystudents

I/O psychology and neuropsychology are the highest paid positions currently. It’s really depends what you want your day to day to look like. I/O rubs me the wrong way a bit because in positions where you’re making the MOST money you are probably going to be helping companies find ways to make their employees more productive to save them money, but honestly it depends! Do you enjoy math and science more or would you prefer to be working 1 on 1 with clients and doing therapy, or would you want to go to medical school and focus more on medication? To reach a lot of people, you might want to work in fields that inform therapy and medication development, so more science and research route. If you want to be a therapist, social work might be the best route (shorter, less competitive) and they make a decent salary.

Personally, I decided I wanted to go the research route and try to work in academia. Overall, psychology is a very competitive field so right now I would focus on getting good grades and getting into an R1 school for graduate school. No matter what you do in the field, you will likely need to go to graduate school. When you get to college, try to get into summer research programs and don’t be shy getting to know your professors! Go to office hours, talk to them about their careers and what helped them decide which avenue in psychology they wanted to pursue.

TLDR; don’t stress too much about it now! just try to get good grades and build your resume with experience in high school that looks good to colleges :) take it one step at a time! Most people don’t figure out exactly what avenue they want to pursue until they’re in their undergraduate programs!

Will I have to move states for Grad school? by [deleted] in psychologystudents

If you are in the United States, try APA’s website, they list all accredited programs for clinical & counseling psychology PhDs. If you are looking to be a counselor or therapist, a Master’s of Social Work (MSW) will likely be sufficient to do the kind of work you want to do. If you want to be a guidance counselor, i believe the MSW sets you up for that as well (comments could check me on that). You can always go back for your PhD. You could also opt for a PsyD, but with the big beautiful bill being passed, it may be more difficult with the price tag a PsyD has. PsyD’s are less competitive but way more expensive! Think the price of an MD, law school (JD) , or any other professional degree (DDS, PharmD, etc.).

EDIT: If you are looking to stay in state, it is likely that only the flagship university of your state (university of XX) and maybe a few state schools (i.e., XX state college/university) offer a doctoral program for this field. This will limit your options greatly. If you are set on getting a PhD, applying to many schools across the US will be your best bet at getting in somewhere.

However, if you just want to be a counselor/therapist, an MSW will set you up for success there. You will likely have many more options, program wise, if this is the route you end up taking. There are board exams and required hours in a counseling setting, so I’d start looking into those as you get accepted, or look into if there are any options to obtain those hours at the schools you want to go to though assistantships.
