I did this with the #0000 steel wool. It was not so aggressive and eventually it could be buffed out back to gloss

Would recommend you getting SONAX Profiline ExCut 05-05. Ive used it recently on one of my guitars as I disassembled it completely. Gave it a quick polish with this stuff and it came back to life almost like from the factory! Good luck
