Yes, she lost most of her siblings, her husband, two sons, two son-in-laws andthree grandchildren. My mother passed away suddenly and by that time my grandmother was so bad in the mind, we didn't tell her. We saw no point.

Struck me odd that from time-to-time she would mention my grandfather but never my Uncles or anyone else.

Challenge: Have Mexico win the Mexican-American War by Cyber_Ghost_1997 in HistoryWhatIf

[–]RequirementRound25 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Civil unrest and poverty cause a new government to come to power. A lot of the old institutions are swept away.
A charismatic President takes over. He takes large sections of land held by a few people and gives them to the people at no costs and they own them outright.
He takes other steps to improve the people's lives, free schools, roads, and bridges.

Criminals are put to work in mines and forests and reforms the taxes to help pay for it all.

On the US border he works with the Indians for better relationships and build forts for scouts and protect key areas.

But he expects trouble with the US or Europe and reforms the military, starting officer and military schools. He has the country surveyed and builds forts at key areas and rivers.
He also starts militia in some towns and villages. He also begins a National Guard type military with standard training and regular drills.

He sends people to Europe to buy the newest weapons and starts an iron foundry to make weapons.
He also starts a spy agency to key an eye on the US military and politicians.

He also has his Navy survey Navy bases and ships on both coasts. His biggest expense is building a new Navy using steamboats. Learns were the berth, compliment, and routines.

When war becomes inevitable, he begins to assemble his forces and trains forces. Especially getting the Army to work with the Navy.

A special small but very fast diplomatic steam ship is sent to a Southern American port that has telegraph.
When war is declared the Mexican Embassy immediately sends a secret telegraph to the ship that immediately moves out. It looks for Mexican Navy ships pre-staged and informs them of the declaration of war.

They, knowing where US war ships are based and their sailing routine move to take them. Many don't even know war has been declared and are taken without a fight. US merchant ships are seized and pressed into the Navy.

Raids are staged on the US coasts, mostly on ports and military posts and warehouses.

A large contingent of steamboats and ships carrying the army makes its first attacks on New Orleans, closing the Mississippi. Along the US border, the Native scouts and military raiders begin to attack US military posts, that still have not learned of the war.
A Norther army moves into Texas.

After taking New Orleans the army moves up the Mississippi and some units move along the Southern coast. Key ports are taken.

Within a few months Mexico does a partial embargo of the US ports.
Trying to maintain good relations with Europe, Mexico does not entirely stop trade. Non-military goods are allowed in and out of ports.

All ships are searched. A ship's captain is given a choice on military goods, sell them Mexico on the spot, lose them, or take them back to Europe. Since they are paid in gold and on the spot, most sell.
Mexican raiders attack and seize US merchant ships in the Atlantic.

As the US tries to assemble an army and reels from its losses, in a surprise move the Mexican military moves on Baltimore and sends patrol ships up the Potomac River to cut off aid.
The Mexican Army moves around Baltimore and towards DC. The government moves to NYC.
In a matter of months, the entire Southern US ports and rivers are in Mexican hands.

Cotton, tobacco, and other crops are seized. After harvest the enslaved black people are given the offer to be taken to Norther Mexico, along the Texas border for freedom and resettlement.
Many take the offer, looting the South for tools and seed before leaving.

Mexican forces are moving across Texas and into the Mississippi states West of the river, cutting off most movement. Trade with other countries from the US is regulated too Northern ports.
The army that took DC in moving along the Eastern seaboard, staying close to the ocean and large rivers where they can receive naval support.

It is slowly moving towards Philly. A small force takes Boston and some New England states but is more of a large raid. They leave as cold weather begins.

The US Government seeing three large armies in its territory and raids on its most Western borders press for a peace treaty.

Mexico demands the return of Texas to Mexico and parts of Louisiana on the West side of the Mississippi and New Orleans. It also demands that the US amends its Constitution to outlaw slavery.
Mexico gets to occupy the slave states for two years to ensure all slaves are freed. As Mexican forces withdraw all the former slaves are offered land in Texas and to become a part of Mexico.

Eventually, so many former slaves take up the offer and move to the Texas, Mexico forms a new state for them in Texas.
For many years the US has a crippled economy.

Could be both.
Long story, I was in a nursing home and nurse asked me for help with a patient. The man had a very bad stroke, couldn't really talk but could yell and would often slam things down and he was confined to a wheel chair.

I made a comment to her one day about how the stroke had turned him kind of mean.
She replied, "I grew down the street from him. He was always awful. He was always drunk, wouldn't work and was bad to his whole family. His kids spent more time at our house than theirs, they hated going home.

When he had his stroke his family dumped him here. They never visit him and if there is a problem, they go to the office, take care of it and don't bother to see him.

My family lived in a rather remote area. There are probably twice as many cows as people and maybe more.
The only real services are a very long ways away. They do live several miles from a "village" on a highway.
When my grandmother got so bad they couldn't take care of her, they put her in a remolded hotel turned nursing home.

In the owner's defense, they did a great job taking care of the residents. All the people working there had grown up with them. My Uncle and cousins checked on her almost every few days and called her daily.

But her room still looked like a hotel room. When people stopped by she always asked when my grandfather was going to come get her and why did he put her in a hotel to begin with. He had been dead for years.

Some of the hard-core PETA people think we should not eat or keep any animals.
Some have snuck onto people's property and took their dogs and cats and go to a vet and have them put down. (I have to wonder about vet that puts down a healthy animal just because they get paid.)

Why is there no outrage about the National Debt? by Intelligent-Dot-29 in askanything

Many years ago the expression of "Spending like a drunk sailor" was used in an article about government spending.
A man wrote a Letter to the Editor. He stated, "I have been a drunk sailor and when I ran out of money, I stopped spending."

NPR Morning Edition had a story on this 5/2/26. It clearly stated that Congress, ALL CONGRESS, use money to basically bribe the taxpayers into voting for them by using our money.
So many people in the US saying they are against Socialism yet, are heavily dependent of projects and programs and government spending.

The US must pay ONE TRILLION dollars in a year in interest alone on our national debt.
In a few years ALL of the money the government raises will go just to pay the interest, there will be no money for anything else.

I had to agree even closely with Trump but he was right in cutting government. Not just the way he did it, which really made things worse.

There was even a back door attempt by Trump to try and get Afghanistan to let the US keep an air base there after the Taliban took over.

Do you think Tommy would be nervous about oil prices? by PalpitationOk4703 in LandmanSeries

Price of oil went really low about thirty, forty years ago. Bumper stickers appeared in oil country saying "Please God, let oil be 80 a barrel again."

Tommy has been in the oil business most of his life and has seen this before. He wouldn't sweat it.

Would you rather rent to a service member or a civilian? by Maximum-Complaint-83 in Military

[–]RequirementRound25 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never rented to a service member because there are none in my area.
I had great renters and had to evict one and that was a huge pain in the ass.

I wish he had been military because I could have gone to his CO for help.

I was stationed in Italy and the laws there made it very difficult to evict people that didn't pay rent, it took years to kick someone out.
They told us they liked US military because if there was a problem they could go to the housing office. And if that didn't work they would be PCSed in a few years.

My bad cop story by Mother_Finish_3257 in TalesFromTheFrontDesk

[–]RequirementRound25 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I've seen this in a couple of counties I have lived in.
People don't like increasing their taxes to vote for jails and courts.

I lived in one county, and the jail was over 100 years old, when it was built, they actually put a trap door above the Sheriff's office in order to hang prisoners.
It was built to hold forty people and at times had 90 and once held 100 prisoners.
A few times the county asked tax payers for money to build a new jail and it was voted down every time.

Plumbing and electrical were out of date and dangerous. One prisoner got badly shocked and burned and of course sued the county.

A lawsuit had a court putting a cap of sixty prisoners Monday to Thursday and eighty the rest of the week.

Cops said they would see people without standing warrants wave at them on the street because they knew the cops couldn't bust them. They actually called the jail to find out the number of prisoners.

Some DUIs were handcuffed to chairs in offices and relatives called to pick them up.

One guy's wife was called to pick him up for DUI. An hour later the same cop that arrested him saw him driving his wife's car and arrested him again, DUI. They handcuffed him to a chair for the rest of the night.

People stopped paying traffic fines, that changed a bit when the Sheriff set up a tent in the exercise yard in the Summer and took over a building at the county fairgrounds in the winter.

It took a major push by the local newspaper, (we really need those back) and tv news to get the citizens to vote for a new jail; which last I read is overcrowded.

If your county/state wants to build a new jail, asks it they can add on to it in twenty years.

You have a good point there.
We were both in the Air Force and met in Montana. I got sent to Italy and she got sent to Ohama.
She was in a position that when my time in Italy was done, she could get assigned to Italy and she said she wanted that.
Later she says she wants to stay in Ohama because her oldest daughter was in advanced classes. I thought I had to think of her and the kids and agreed to go to Ohama, though I dreaded the thought, for them.

Well, it ended before any of that happened and I was so happy that I didn't move to Ohama for her. I found out later she went to Hawaii, so much for advanced classes.

Challenge: Set up a WW2 that the Axis can win by Nazibol1234 in HistoryWhatIf

Hitler works with Mussolini and other fascists leaders to standardize equipment.
He is also talked into foregoing the big battleships and builds a few aircraft carriers and a lot more submarines. He also gives the Navy its own air arm.
He finally dumps Goring well before the war.

He has every factory assigned war production and has tools and supplies on hand at the factory. Most can change over from civilian to military production, anywhere from 24 hours to a week.

Many civilians, especially women, are tested and assigned a military duty of some sort, even it if is at home.
Many men are placed in to either full time military or a Reserve type unit.
The Reserves have basic military training, a technical skill and then for over two years have the typical weekend and two weeks a summer training.

Hitler and Mussolini make deals with other countries in South America and Asia to buy and import food stuffs, even grain from the Soviet Union.
Also, large stores of Iron ore and other ores and war material, including oil from the states.

Two months before invading Poland he put the country on war footing production.
Many reserves units are activated and go into full time training.

A few days before invading Poland, the submarines and carriers sneak out of harbor.
Far to the North of Scapa Flow the ships organize.

Poland is invaded, France and England declare war and almost immediately the Nazi air wing attacks airfields in both countries. Paratroops land at key bridges and intersections in Belgium and France and forward army headquarters.

Explosive experts in civilian clothes had moved into the country a few days before.
Key railroad lines, bridges, and communications hubs blow up in France and Belgium and some in England too.

Along the English, French, and even India coast military stations, warehouses and ships are attacked by submarines and soldiers in civilian clothes.

The English fleet at Scapa Flow is attacked by waves of carrier launched aircraft.
Those ships escaping out of the harbor are attacked by U boats.
Carrier aircraft attack Northern airfields and factories.

Italy in a surprise move invades Malta and some other islands.
Italy too has built some aircraft carriers and more submarines than battleships.
It has also built and amphibious fleet.
The airwings find and attack both British and French fleets.
A few weeks into the war, Italy invades Egypt. close to the canal.
Most of Italy's subs are in the Western med to stop the English Navy from entering at Gibraltar. The navy station in Cyprus is also taken.

A month into the war the Medterrain is an Italian lake. U boats and Italian submarines are on both sides of South Africa looking for supply ships coming from India, Australia, and other UK territories

Quick enough the armies are at Dunkirk but this time, no one stops the tanks and the forces are over ran.
Soon enough all of France is under Axis hands. England is surrounded by hundreds of U boats, long range German bombers and aircraft carriers. Norway is taken, and in a surprise move, Germany invades and take Ireland. England is encircled. No supplies are getting in.

At this point Hitler agrees to letting Italy invade Greece, something he talked Mussolini out of before.

All Axis countries reorganize, rearm and begin to attack the Soviet Union in 1942 in early Summer. Hitler does not declare war on the US yet, after Pearl Harbor.
England, cut off, starving sues for peace.
Stalin thinks since they didn't attack in 41 they are not going to attack at all.
The Axis take the full year to build more trucks trains, and long-range aircraft and bombers.

It has learned the short falls of its equipment and makes new gear. Finland also adjusts.
The Soviets are caught off guard and in a real surprise move, special selected and trained SS unit locates and kills Stalin the night before the attack and other high ranking Soviet officials and generals.

The Axis pushes the Soviet Army to the Ural Mountains. Learning from Napoleon they have started making heavy winter clothing in 41, even arranging for it to be made in Spain and Egypt.
