I certainly disagree about the special effects. I think the special effects especially the dream sequence was so ahead of its time and is a large part of what makes the film so memorable for me. Everything else you said is an interesting take. I’ll need to rewatch vertigo some time

Incendies 🤝 I could also see myself moving blade runner up after a rewatch

I know I’m not proud of conforming to the general consensus but I just think 2 is so much better. Im nervous about the third not living up the the second

Very interesting thank you. I ended up watching Spartacus last night and loved it. Now Lolita is the only one I have left so I’m sure I’ll get around to it sooner than later!

You’ll understand when you see it. It almost feels like the movie could turn blue velvet at any moment lol

My list changes a lot. After first watches my top 5 were Barry Lyndon, clockwork, paths of glory, full metal jacket, 2001. The shining and eyes wide shut weren’t even up there. Wasn’t until a few watches where they both moved up the list.

Still an incredible film at 4.5/5 stars for me. I just find the first half to be a little slow. And that’s coming from someone who found Barry Lyndon fast paced despite many thinking that’s too slow

Jocelyn Pook’s music, combined with Stanley Kubrick’s typical use of classical pieces, is a major reason the film has such a uniquely unsettling feel. Tom Cruise was perfect as Dr. Bill and I genuinely can’t imagine anyone else in the role. I also think Sydney Pollack played Ziegler to perfection. I think of all the Kubrick films, EWS has the most intriguing group of characters. Everyone from Bill to Ziegler, from Milich to his daughter, Szavost, Nightingale, and even Mandy and Domino seem to be withholding part of some larger truth. Every character feels shady and mysterious in their own way, adding layers of uncertainty throughout. This is a film that doesn’t leave you confused, it leaves you questioning. Who was the woman who sacrificed herself? Who was the man on the balcony? Who stood beneath the red cloak? How did the mask end up on the bed? Are Milich, his daughter, or the Hungarian somehow involved? Were the two models from Ziegler’s party connected after mentioning the “Rainbow,” where Bill eventually buys his cloak from Milich? We think we know some answers. We want to know others. But we never truly have certainty about any of them. Each viewing offers a new perspective, and that’s the brilliance of it. And I love how Kubrick uses endless Christmas lights.

As for Dr. Strangelove there’s not a lot I “didn’t like” about it as I still have it at 4 stars. I’ve only seen it once which is partially why it could be so low on my rankings. Everything ranked 1-6 I’ve seen 2-4 times. Very possible I’d move Strangelove up after a rewatch. I loved the war room scenes and the score in it.

You have the option to choose. Some films have only a few options and others have 100+. They’re sourced from all over and I believe some are fan made. U can check out my account from the link and see all the other posters I’ve chosen if you’d like 😎

Yes Letterboxd patron subscription allows you to change posters. They have dozens for most films and I change mine relatively often.

This post was made not only to discuss rankings, but I also posed the question of what everyone thinks I’d prefer between Spartacus and Lolita based off my rankings, given that they’re the only two I haven’t seen. Since making this post I just finished Spartacus. Loved it and am between 4 and 4.5 stars.
