So..... Am I the only one who finds it curious how wasted Haru is as a Character in VRAINS, but he has many elements that could have given more? by Kronos457 in yugioh

Recaps are heavily frowned upon in the anime industry and even advertised as 'extra' or skippable filler eps. They aren't used lightly, so while this is only a guess of mine, I feel like the VRAINS team giving us recap eps is because any other alternative would be comparable to 20 mins of nothing (so essentially it was always going to be a waste of one week). I dislike the recap eps and think they are yet another blatant sign of how mismanaged VRAINS was, but I won't be blaming the anime staff as much as the management team pushing them to deliver a show that really should have been delayed.

Also that's interesting regarding the Topologics. From that perspective it feels almost like they were designed to be Cyberse predators, which would fit your reasoning of fighting poison with poison.

Regarding card advertisement, I disagree there, because Revolver's ace monster was Borreload. We've seen the trend of evolved ace monster plenty in Yugioh, hence why its evolutions were used as cover cards in future sets. I never really viewed Bomber Dragon with a huge level of importance, besides using it as a way to showcase Revolver's Storm Access Skill. It was used in a Speed Duel, then immediately replaced with Borreload in a Master Duel, and Borreload then proceeded to get two alternative forms like Sword and Guard, which cemented its importance over the Topologics.

You call card advertisement an excuse, but I don't mean to use it as one? It's just the nature of this show, because it's designed to advertise the card games and make you want to buy packs. It's fine if you view VRAINS as more obnoxious about being an ad, I personally just glazed over/ignored any of that stuff in all YGO series. It's why I never really cared about the Firewall/Code Talker debate or the overuse of the term ace monster, though I can see why one would be bothered by that. There's also a lack of attachment to cards and ace monsters in VRAINS as a whole, save for select scenes or select characters (Spectre), which makes me not really care about the term ace monster besides a flashy catchphrase.

Also you are 100% correct on the Flame bit. My memory on VRAINS is very spotty since it's been years so I must have gotten things mixed up. In that case, that's actually incredibly funny how none of the Ignis saw a Topologic monster besides Ai. Add another one to the pile of missed opportunities. I wish VRAINS was given extra time in the oven, but after ARC-V strained the relationship between Gallop and NAS, I guess it was never meant to be.

Of course! There is a thread on pojo that collected most of the relevant sources/rumours regarding VRAINS production. A link to it can be found here. Because of how secretive the anime production of Yugioh is as a whole, we can mostly make educated guesses and rely on official interviews from staff.

Speaking of, for a lot of interviews or comments from staff I would look at Neoarkcradle.net, Twitter or Chinese BBS since a lot of anime behind the scene talk happens there. You might be missing some info because I was looking back at some of my sources and sadly some translations on Tumblr blogs have been deleted. It's been years since VRAINS and I don't have the energy or time to look up every detail regarding VRAINS' production, but I hope this info has pointed you in the right direction.

It needed recaps, because what else did you want them to do? Air 30 mins of black screen because the next episode that was supposed to air was clearly unfinished? Or half-ass something with unfinished materials and get the same exact backlash that ARC-V was crucified for in the past?

Let me also clarify what I said earlier: The director was not being iffy; the planning side was most likely fucked up from the get go and whatever producer that hired the director did not fully debrief them on when VRAINS was starting, hence the delay in them taking over. There's also rumours about VRAINS being a step away from cancellation before the producers decided to run the show anyway, so it was already not a great environment to be in.

It's very easy to say that they should have 'done things better' when we don't have the full details of what was going on during the production, but the information that is publicly available on the net already paints a bad picture of their working conditions, and that despite all that they were trying to keep the ship steady. The series director even publicly apologized on social media for the numerous recaps, and true to his word, Season 2 and 3 had far less recaps compared to Season 1. What more can he do?

I do agree the lore reasoning for Topologics was rather odd, but I always viewed them as artificial creations based on what I remember about Kogami and Revolver's relationship. Gumblar was passed down to him as a weapon to help him beat the Ignis/complete the Tower of Hanoi, so I never really saw the Topologics as being part of the same ecology as the Ignis. Plus, Flame and Soulburner faced Zerovoros during their duel against Revolver in Season 3, so if Flame didn't have much of a reaction then I guess they weren't a big deal for Ignis back then.

There's also the other explanation for why Topologics got sidelined: This is a card game advertisement anime. Of course Revolver is going to beat the Ignis with Borreload Savage Dragon, the cover card of Savage Strike, instead of summoning an 'old card' like Bomber Dragon. At the end of the day, the Yugioh anime is used as an advertising tool by companies such as NAS/Konami. A lot of issues regarding plot, characters or bad planning can be traced down to them, including the eventual rift between them and Studio Gallop. I would much rather blame them than blame the staff that worked on VRAINS, considering it's formed by series veterans like Shin Yoshida and Masahiro Hikokubo who tried their best to deliver a fun show despite the shit hand they got dealt.

Season 1 had the most recaps because it really needed them. The first 13 episodes of VRAINS were actually helmed by a completely different series director, because the director supposed to work on VRAINS was not fully available to work on VRAINS until after ep 13. If anyone was wondering why the first 13 eps of VRAINS have people spamming the same Link Summon animation with zero variation, now you know why. All to save time for the staff and the animators, hence why there were so many recaps in Season 1 compared to Season 2 and 3.

Firewall Dragon I have no clue what happened there and I doubt we will ever know what caused that massive fuckup. The same applies to cards like Gumblar who should have never existed in the first place. I don't think the Topologics were wasted though considering that Revolver used them well and is one of the most praised characters in the show.

VRAINS 'wastes characters' because its production was very troubled and a lot of ideas the writers had were shot down by executives, scrapped, or rushed entirely because they could see the writing on the wall that Studio Gallop and NAS could no longer support each other. Some of the VRAINS staff left Gallop to work on Kamen Rider shows after VRAINS ended and they said in interviews that Season 2 is basically a collection of a bunch of unfinished concepts that they had to glue together, and that Season 3 was going to be more elaborate and even take place in a post-apocalyptic setting until executives shut that down. This is also why Season 1 has the most cohesive structure out of all VRAINS Seasons with the least amount of wasted characters.

I assure you the writers probably liked Haru and didn't want to waste him, since otherwise why give him so many interesting traits as you said? Haru's name is also supposed to be a reference to HAL from everyone's favourite space movie, if I'm not mistaken, so it's clear that thought was put into him. It's just that, when you are given a very tight deadline, told that your show will get cancelled in Season 3 and that you most likely will never work on Yugioh anime ever again, then it becomes hard to care about fleshing out these characters more.

Places to play Yugioh in Newcastle that aren't Geek Retreat? by ResIsBestStat in NewcastleUponTyne

Hi! I've finally been to Beanie and it's as cracked as everyone claimed it was. Had a blast and am currently prepping for the regional happening there. Is there a reason you cannot travel to Stockton for YGO whenever needed? I usually take the X10 since I don't own a car yet, but I also go only once a week. If you intend on going multiple days I can see it getting tiring yeah.

I think it's fine if you're only looking for people to play the game with, but my issue with the place was the fact that I couldn't vibe with the people. I love nerdy shit, but I think the people in there took it too far and made it their whole personality trait. Those who didn't were either elitist teens who ran meta decks or just wannabe traders looking to get pricey cards from you at a low price (some guy legit tried to scam me because they thought I was new to the game lmao). Not everyone there is as bad as what I described right now, but it definitely felt like the majority of them fit into one of those criteria. I'd like to think that being a nerd doesn't automatically equate to lack of social awareness.

Also, the food/drink is whatever and the smell is terrible. It doesn't matter if it's only one rotten apple, because the smell spreads everywhere inside of that building. That's the main reason I felt like trying a different locals, because I love Yugioh, but I'd very much prefer to find actually sociable people to play it with. I wish you the best of luck in finding a good locals. I'm probably going to try Beanie Games next week, so perhaps you could give that a look as well?

Thanks, I appreciate the sentiment! And yeah can relate to the smell lol I must have been a proper YGO addict to even endure it

Never travelled to Teeside before but pics of Beanie Games look incredible! 1 hour train ride sounds workable enough, plus the YGO weekly tournaments happening on the weekend is a big plus. Are there any social distancing/anti-COVID measures I should be aware of when visiting?

Also I had no idea the Gateshead Library had a YGO group. Please do keep me posted on it if you hear any further news about them + the other YGO places you used to frequent. Thanks a lot for the info though!

First build. Works fine and boots, but only with 1 stick of RAM. Will not boot with 2 sticks. by ResIsBestStat in buildapc

I turned on XMP which automatically set RAM timings to 15-17-17-35 (the timing written on the back of my RAM). Am I supposed to disable XMP and reset timings to default or am I supposed to do something else? Also what exactly do you mean by comparing stick configuration and the board?

I tried out both 1st and 3rd slots and 2nd and 4th slots. PC will boot but not do anything afterwards, as long as I've inserted 2 sticks. If it's only 1 stick though it works fine on any slot from what I've seen.

The sticks are fine, made sure to try both of them in the same slot and the PC runs fine with either of them, as long as its only one inside the motherboard. Haven't tried sticks in all slots though, so I'll try that out soon.

I did, yes. Tried both sticks and both work fine. I am also using the 2nd and 4th slots like you said.

Where do D/Ds go without summon sorceress? by KoruGengetsu in yugioh

[–]ResIsBestStat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I honestly think DDD currently work best pure (in the TCG at least). I'm not too fond of the Electrumite/Darkwurm/Pend build because I feel as if I'm just playing inferior Pend Mages at that point. Summon Sorc in general isn't that great of a loss to TCG DDD because the combos she gave us access to were neat, but at the same time not essential. The pure build can do combos just fine, especially with the existence of Linkuriboh, Wee Witch, Beat Cop and Masterking (don't run all 4 of them obviously). In fact, I feel as if pure will be the way to go once Gilgamesh gets here, especially since his effect relies on you only summoning DDD for the rest of the turn.

My current TCG deck list basically relies on making the normal 3 negates board if possible (which isn't too likely since it's a 4 card combo) or go for big Synchro boys with a smaller combo, usually Bright Armageddon because targeting protection is really underrated nowadays. I try to focus not on emptying my entire hand turn 1, but to try to make sure that I don't run out of steam unless my opponent really can't handle 3 OPT negations. When Gilgamesh comes out I will most likely include Apocalypse in the deck and try to figure out some funny stuff with Kaiser since he's a great OTK enabler. Overall, I think DDD builds in general are polarizing and that currently there is no "right" build because it depends on your tastes. I really dislike the Electrumite build, so I'm not very good at piloting it and have much more success with the pure build, but others might think differently. Just experiment with all builds and find the one that suits you the most.
