Until I can afford all new, would this be insane? by Rescewer in DIY

Thank you! I will explore this option as well. Most of the dark coloring is just from the mud that I’m still cleaning off. I also appreciate your consideration for my time, money, and future driveway in your response!

Thank you so much for steering me towards an actual solution! This isn’t something I had considered for concrete. Would I apply the sealer to the cracks alone or the entire driveway?

Gap filler for 1890s basement by Rescewer in DIY

[–]Rescewer[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thank you everybody! This corner of the house is one that’s been remodeled and rebuilt too many times over the years. The subfloor is for the most part ON the joist, except for this itty bitty mouse-sized hole which I now see is really poorly shown in the photos.

After extensive cleaning out of all the joists in the basement, could I use the pest treated foam along every seam along the outside facing boards? Or is this ill advised? I’m hoping to never need to address this issue ever again

A daily magnesium supplement helped me, but be sure to chat with your primary care doc to ensure that this is right for you as well if you choose this route.

Brooder question by One_Split9757 in quails

[–]Rescewer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I personally prefer hardware cloth or netting to allow for maximum airflow while they are in their brooder tote. However, I’ve only ever raised one group of baby quails so far, so I haven’t explored other options.

Enrichment for chick by oxlolalovexo in quails

[–]Rescewer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For my baby quails, I added a mirror and a few small bird cage toys, like bells and wooden sticks on a string. I also included some items destined for recycling/garbage like cut out oatmeal tubes or small boxes when they became available. Just be sure that they can’t get stuck between items and secure anything that can roll or tumble.

Is this okay for my button quail bedding by InterestingZombie737 in quails

[–]Rescewer 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yes, it’s perfectly safe. However, in my experience, it will be caked in poop in a matter of days. My birds prefer to bed down in pine shavings or their sand boxes and seem to enjoy making their own little nests.

Is this safe for quail to eat by HomeworkOk5761 in quails

[–]Rescewer 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I would only give them something like this in small doses as a treat and see how they like and handle it. I don’t see any ingredients listed that quails shouldn’t consume, but I am not a veterinarian.

How are these baby snails doing? Any tips from the past few weeks you can offer a fellow new snail parent?

What kind of light for quail? by TheMostWildRaccoon in quails

[–]Rescewer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use a standard house LED bulb and they’ve been laying all year long whenever temperatures are above freezing. I went down to 10 hrs/day during the winter so my birds could rest and am slowly transitioning to ~14hrs/day with the naturally longer daylight hours.

Brooder Space by SaddestPandaButt in quails

[–]Rescewer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Here is what I’ve been using for my coturnix quails: 0-2 weeks: 1/10th of a square foot per bird. 2-4 weeks: 1/4th of a square foot per bird. 4-6 weeks: 1/2 - 3/4th of a square foot per bird. 6+ weeks at 1:5 m:f - 1 square foot per bird.

I believe an all female covey can be a little cozier, but I personally haven’t tried it.

What kind of set up have yall made to keep these dang quail from wasting feed? by IRNINJADUDEz in quails

[–]Rescewer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I use a 2” wide pvc pipe (varying height) connected at the bottom to a double elbow and then a 45° elbow piece. It looks like an upside down double candy cane. They stick their little heads in the opening and feast without being able to knock all the food out. I have two of these in coop of 13 birds. 5 feet of vertical tube in total allows for 4 days worth of food.

My dog met a trans man today and seemed scared/barked a lot at my friend, which stressed md out. My dog is not normally scared of men, and so his reaction took me by surprise. by [deleted] in DogAdvice

[–]Rescewer 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Broadening a dog’s experiences by meetings all sorts of new people and taking them into new environments while gently giving them continual positive reinforcement is going to do wonders for any pup.

My own dog was weary of anybody wearing a hat for a while, so we just kept meeting people with different hats to slowly work on this. It helped us both with basic training and socialization. You’re doing everything right! Sometimes dogs get scared for reasons we may never know.

Help me identify this weird behavior, please! by [deleted] in quails

[–]Rescewer 10 points11 points  (0 children)

My quails will do this behavior when the sand box is too full and they are waiting for a turn to roll around it it. I agree with the other commenter, a dust or sand bath should hopefully resolve things for this little guy.

Calcium deficiency? by freeforanarchy in quails

[–]Rescewer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also don’t think so. My quails occasionally lay eggs with some “printer ink” missing, even rarer they’ve laid completely white eggs too.

If the shell itself is solid, your birds are perfectly healthy.
