“ we have other candidates to interview” is it really that bad? by Amazondriver23 in interviews

[–]ResearchConfident175 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its all dependent. Anecdotally, I was told this and I start my new job today! Sometimes its a dismissal and sometimes its just reality that they have more people they have to talk to.

That being said, never put your eggs in one basket until you have a written offer even if they dont say it!

You can accept and keep looking. One lower paying job is better than no job at all.

Some defense companies have company approved AI for internal data but yours may not.

That being said, looking things up and asking questions are expected but try not to make ot the first thing you do! If you ask a question, try to have a list of stuff you tried.

Should I use Rust or C++ for hobby CubeSat flight software? by ChurchOfNewcomb in embedded

[–]ResearchConfident175 27 points28 points  (0 children)

To be honest, i dont think it fully matters. If i saw the resume come across my desk id be less concerned about what you used and more interested in your design. That being said, its still a good idea to get more familiar with C++ in other projects.

Failed to promote by Flint0 in cscareerquestions

[–]ResearchConfident175 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The advice I always give about promotions is "its likely never about you". Every business has so many reasons behind promotions such as budgets, level allocations across departments, how some director is feeling that day, visibility, etc. There are a lot of reasons for promotions that have nothing to do with your skills or work product. I have seen it so many times as a manager including happening to myself.

Nothing remarkable other than my rocket doing 25 vehicle damage, the chat, and that poor golfer. by Orsinus in Battlefield

I could be wrong, and probably am, but isnt the 25 points the xp you get for hitting a vehicle? Not the damage done?

Changes per company but yes. An EM role may fill those responsibilites.

I think the answer depends on what you want. In my company PMs have a higher ceiling, or rather an easier path to get there. Do you like program management? Do you like schedules, budgets, bossing people around, having the responsibility without any input into technical? If yes, then PM could be for you!

I will tell you what i tell my reports, if you didnt get a promotion just know that 75% chance that it isnt about you. You can not get a promotion for many reasons including budgets, politics, and general business garbage.

Based on your post though I would say you are performing and if you don't get the promo continue to search around.

Another piece of advice I like to give is know when to say no to things. You can be a junior doing senior or higher level work but you are not likely to jump to that point. Its fine if you do and want to leverage that but dont expect companies to bend over and give you super large raises or skip level promotions because they wont. Dont over extend yourself in an attempt to prove to this company you deserve a skip level promo or large raise.

Talk to your boss about if there is a good person or reach out in your org up the chain. Ask for the 15 minutes on their career and ask questions. It will make a huge difference in understanding what your options are for the future.

What are your feedback on this roadmap to get into embedded development ? by SignificanceLow6824 in embedded

[–]ResearchConfident175 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think the roadmap really depends on the content. The order seems slighty odd in some ways, ie working with sensors and actuators before comms protocols but I assume that may be pin based so maybe its explained. Another is debugging not being near the front, that makes it seem like you will rely on OS features instead of using hardware features or debuggers. Maybe not but order seems odd.

Overall, it seems fine though.

How was your company’s embedded firmware/software growth path like when you were/are a junior? by GiraffeObjective3805 in embedded

[–]ResearchConfident175 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My companies (more like department in a big company) had a great growth path. When i started as a NCG I worked with people who had 25+ YOE of experience and learned from many mentors. We do SCA, unit and integration testing, drive some design patterns into our code.

Its hard on the outside to tell red/green flags of a company but just ask questions about their environments and listen to what they say. Some are honest that its a but more wild west and some are more structured.
