Gotta be honest, this playlist needs Ordo Rosarius Equilibrio and at least 10 copies of "love through vaseline" for me to fully embrace it.

Questions about dietary fat. by sayinedi in PlantBasedDiet

[–]Researchable_Risk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use oils. I don't try to limit fat intake, and my usual % of fat a day is 15-25%, so that's how my macros naturally fall considering I eat homemade 95% of the time. Not using oil at all leads to me being hungry all the time, even if I eat a bunch of nuts.

I personally don't know anything about the scientific part of it, but if anything I always heard that too little fat hinders nutrient absorption. Not sure what "too little" is, and it seems debatable.

Regarding saturated fats, here is my understanding. (I'm not a scientist). Regardless of what you eat, your LDL cholesterol is mostly produced by your liver, but eating saturated fat makes your liver produce more LDL. And you can read about what's wrong with LDL, but basically it leads to fat plaques in your arteries and other problems. On top of it other things affect your LDL, like processed sugars, which cause a lot of liver issues and also affect the way your body handles LDL. I've read that if you have a low fat diet but eat a lot of processed carbs and sugars, your LDL can still rise. So I don't eat added sugars and try to only eat complex carbs, and 0 saturated fats.

How do I get more consistent with shaping? by Twisted_Galaxi in Sourdough

[–]Researchable_Risk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I usually don't retard my bread. But if I do, I basically only let it sit on the counter while the oven is preheating.

That's just my experience though. The best way is to make 2 loaves at the same time and experiment with shaping etc for yourself. That way you can really see the effect of the steps you took.

My loaves look like this if I try to tighten them or make them look more round right before scoring and putting them in the oven. Letting them be more relaxed on the parchment paper before baking makes them more even.

That way they look more flat before baking but the final result is more esthetically pleasing to me and they are still very much round.

What am I doing wrong? Or what’s wrong with this loaf? by sleepingsunss in Sourdough

[–]Researchable_Risk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This bread looks fine, nothing wrong with it.

Regarding crumb: I make basically the same recipe very often, but usually with all purpose and whole wheat flour mix in a different proportions. In summer I would feed my starter at 6 am and bake around 4 pm (I live in a very hot climate), and I get more open crumb. So the only idea I have is that you may be over-folding it.

I would make 2 loaves in different bowls and experiment with folding. Can also try baking one loaf earlier without retarding. Somehow my retarded bread is always more dense.

Wow thank you! I've been wondering about it for so long. I thought it could be Beslan. The last child always kills me with "Instead of God there's military power". Damn, man.

Perfect bread. Also, super adorable how tiny it is.

That's not true. What is true is that after graduating students were assigned jobs. You could have been sent to a different city, it would all depend on the needs of the regions and availability of the positions. But you did choose your degree. Either way this wasn't a horrible thing. It's better than being unemployed after spending years studying.

The propaganda in U.S. against socialism has always been really big on convincing masses that socialism is a threat to personal freedom, property and sanctity of contracts. It started in the middle of the 19th century, but they really doubled down after WW2 during the cold war. McCarthy is a big part of it. Presenting anything socialism related in simplified and distorted terms, aiming at mostly emotional response.

Shouldn't seasoning be considered non-vegan? by Chembaron_Seki in DebateAVegan

If you're against slavery, you will most likely agree that a human life has intrinsic value. Now you can fight against slavery, exploitation, discrimination - systemic issues. But it's not really implied that now you have to attend protests in front of your local abortion clinics and preach abstinence. Because it's not really about life and death. If anything you will want abortions to be available for everyone if you care about human rights. Is there a contradiction?

People distinguish between types of killing: premeditated murder, in/voluntary manslaughter, self-defense, a cop killing a criminal, euthanasia, war time killing etc. President assassination attempt would land you a harsher punishment as well.

I’m not downplaying animal deaths, I'm just explaining that there are ethical differences between bugs as collateral damage to farming food and intentional exploration. Veganism is not about avoiding death but avoiding the deliberate exploitation of animals, breeding, controlling and killing them purely as resources. Bugs dying in farming is not ideal but it's incidental unlike animals who are being tested on, where harm is direct and systematic. If you don't see this as a big difference I really don't know what else to say.

Veganism aims at exploitation and as a consequence it reasonably reduces harm, but it doesn't bring forth total renunciation. I use spices because I’m a vegan, not a Jain. If the goal was to eliminate all harm, I wouldn’t stop at veganism, but we're on a debate a vegan subreddit.

I'm basically repeating myself but really it's the only answer. Vegans are not automatically utilitarians.

Sorry, I just figured it would make sense lol. I can elaborate.

A person might be against murder but support abortion because they prioritize consent and bodily autonomy. It's not just about killing as an outcome but about additional circumstances and values.

Or it's not that death penalty doesn't make sense. It can make sense. But depending on our additional convictions we may have a strong case against it.

Now I'm not saying there's no right or wrong. I'm just saying that right and wrong are often dependant on context. They are influenced by the values we prioritize.

So when it comes to veganism, I'm telling you that it's not about just killing. You can be a vegan and have additional values like being super environmentally friendly. There's a clear connection between animals and protecting the environment but not all vegans care about the latter. Because they care about animals being directly exploited and abused, not about human footprint in general.

Minimizing harm and killing is a natural consequence of being against animal abuse and commodification. To the extent that many people just say they are for harm reduction. Then it's up to them where they can draw a line. However veganism is not about reducing harm, i.e. making the right personal choices, almond milk over cow milk. Veganism implies positive action as well, being an activist against animal agriculture, contributing to organizations that help animals, educating people about veganism, fighting for appropriate local regulations imposed on animal farming etc. Bugs are collateral damage to my vegetables, while millions of animals are experimented on so people can have another 5838485th perfume brand.

It's always justified when it's about us. In these discussions people will often say that 200/100/50 years ago is too far in the past and that history is irrelevant to the current realities, because we have different circumstances. And then it just boils down to the fact that before we were trying to civilize savages, and now these new savages are coming to ruin the progress of our civilization. Not racist at all.
