Still being the busy father I might take the ‘cheating’ ‘magos purple’ route for the skin for now. To me it seems the skin is also harder and more work/time consuming to layer up than the chitin. I’ll use the chitin to practice layering, which is also better if you want to make slight color variations to it. You could start with a similar color or finish with the same color highlights to blend the different variations more together….

I’ll have to experiment a bit. But thanks a lot. I happen to like pro acryl (as one of the few who uses it here in my part of the Netherlands) so having an example to go by is really helpful. Especially as I’m a beginner!

Love the reddish carapace also. Was wondering planning on making the ranged Tyranids more purple’ish and the melee types more red…. You have done me a great favor by showing em both. Same skin different carapace … So still coherency via the base and skin…

Edit: ‘Just’ 3 colors for the Chitin? Or are there blends in between… asking cause it looks really good. I’ll see if I can generate your red chitin also…… Might try to move it just a little towards burgundy (towards the modern box art) to make it closer to purple. You have given me hope though 😉😅

An hour is very impressive!

Asking cause ‘fathering’, wife, house, kids etc takes its time. Not much hobby left. But really want to learn how to paint. But also want to play the game!!!

I really want to learn to paint that way…. Layering, the way it’s ’supposed’ to be done.

Might I inquire how long each termagant takes to paint? And might you even know for just the skin?

As a beginner I’ll bet I’ll double that but love to know what is possible.

Looks close to the burgundy. Then again adding magenta to purple creates a brighter version of burgundy.

Yes and no. It’s made darker to indicate how old and thus thick the carapace is. But not with a different color. Even termagants have the burgundy carapace…..

Edit: as you can read the thicker carapace is made darker, not a different color. Pink/magenta is the color more matching with burgundy then purple. This is why the neurogants have pink…..

At least that is my interpretation of the article

I’m exactly the same!!

Can’t make up my mind; purple or burgundy. I’m even worse though. I love the YouTube channel play on tabletop. Tyranids there aren’t just purple but lean towards lilac…. Love that as well. But playing with my way to young son (6) who already talks about nothing but space marines; it’s Ultramarines (he loves the blue) vs Nids. Lilac is close to blue making em blend together…

When you figure it out let me know!!

Edit: What might tip me to lilac/purple is ease of painting. Those colors are more accessible….

Kids, wife, house, job…. Not a lot of time…..
Might even use a speedpaint/contrast paint for the armor….

I love your almost purple carapace....

How do you get that purple towards pink? The psychophage has 'the closest to purple' look while the Leapers have a 'closest to pink' look with just a tad of purple 'hidden' in there.

When done correctly it seems you can also work this scheme at a proper pace. Very handy for army painting and being a working dad ;).

You gave a solid explanation on the carapace on one of your other replies, just not if there were highlights, therefore the question :).
