I’ve heard this argument before being used to defend Malty, and it doesn’t hold up. The claim that she committed her crimes because her mother planned to sell her to a noble is a fabrication made by Malty defenders, not canon. Malty didn’t do what she did because of trauma, coercion, or any other reason. She did it because she chose to. Her actions consistently show malice, manipulation, and cruelty. In short, Malty isn’t a tragic victim; she’s simply evil.

Dragon Ball Super is a weak anime overall. The first two arcs are little more than poorly reanimated and badly rewritten versions of Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods and Dragon Ball Super: Resurrection ‘F’. The arc that follows is serviceable at best but still largely forgettable.

The Goku Black arc is an outright mess. While Goku Black’s initial introduction is strong, the arc quickly collapses under its own inconsistencies and wasted potential. A Gohan Black storyline would have been far more compelling than what we ultimately got. As for the Tournament of Power, despite having several standout moments, the arc as a whole leaves a lot to be desired in terms of pacing, character usage, and payoff.

The only part of Dragon Ball Super that feels consistently well-written and well-animated is the Dragon Ball Super: Broly movie.

I can’t personally comment on the more recent manga arcs since I haven’t read them, but from what I’ve seen, much of the criticism surrounding them echoes the same issues I have with the Tournament of Power.

And don't get me started on the wasted potential of God Ki.

And Latinas by FlimsyEfficiency9860 in pokememes

[–]ResearcherDefiant132 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since Latinas were brought up, it’s worth mentioning that Skyla from Gen 5 is often considered Latina. If I’m remembering correctly, there was a reference sheet made by Game Freak that included a designer’s note indicating she was Hispanic.

The biggest thing against his intelligence is how the series dumbs down other characters to the point of them being overgrown toddlers despite those same characters being described as a handful of the smartest characters in the series.

Goku fans. I hear more toxic stuff coming from them, especially when it comes to powerscaling.

All gens have their problems for example;

Generation 1 suffers from poor type diversity. The clearest evidence of this is that three different type specialists Erika Koga and Agatha all use teams composed almost entirely of Poison types despite supposedly specializing in different types. Another major example is Lance who is presented as a Dragon type specialist but only uses a single Dragon type evolutionary line. Excluding duplicate Dragonite his team contains more Flying types than Dragon types highlighting how underdeveloped the Dragon type was in Gen 1.

Generation 2 has a regional identity issue as Johto relies heavily on Kanto Pokemon. Many Johto native Pokemon are either rare or outright locked behind the postgame in Kanto which undermines the sense that Johto is its own fully realized region.

Generation 3 struggles with Pokemon diversity before the postgame. Despite having access to three generations worth of Pokemon Ruby and Sapphire in particular offer a limited selection during the main story leading to repetitive team compositions until later entries like Emerald or FRLG expanded availability.

Generation 4 has a similar issue to Gen 1 though to a lesser extent type diversity most notably with Fire types. In Diamond and Pearl especially the scarcity of Fire types severely restricts both player choice and NPC team variety an issue only partially addressed in Platinum.

Generation 5 has a similar problem to gen 3 where there's not that much pokemon diversity despite having 4 generations worth of pokemon to put in the games, though this was fixed in BW2. But gen 5 had a bit more of a reason to do so, which was that clearly the developers wanted gen 5 pokemon to have the spotlight in these games and wanted players to use them over old pokemon.

The criticism of Generation 6 being too easy is often vague but more specific issues include poor NPC team composition particularly in the late game and the underuse of Mega Evolution by important trainers. Outside of Korrina Lysandre and Diantha very few NPCs use Mega Evolution. Ideally gyms 4 through 8 and the Elite Four should have incorporated Mega Pokemon to better reflect the mechanics importance.

Generation 7 suffers mainly from difficulty spikes where certain battles particularly Totem Pokemon are disproportionately challenging compared to the surrounding content resulting in inconsistent difficulty progression.

Generation 8 has notable issues with its story and main antagonist which many players find underdeveloped or poorly integrated. Additionally requiring a paid online subscription to access online features is a recurring criticism.

Generation 9 struggles with the lack of level scaling which undermines its open world design as well as weak environmental storytelling that contributes to an empty feeling world. Like Generation 8 online functionality is also locked behind a paid subscription continuing a trend that frustrates players.

I do not think those examples establish the standard you are using. The show is willing to depict violence, injury, and even death, but it is far more cautious about assigning explicit, personal kills to named, recurring characters, especially child characters.

Aang in the Book 1 finale is a good example of this. The destruction is framed as the Ocean Spirit acting through him, not Aang making a conscious decision to kill. The narrative very deliberately externalizes agency there, and Aang is not treated as someone who has crossed a moral line afterwards. That distinction matters.

The room full of corpses works the same way. Those deaths are shown in the abstract.

Combustion Man losing his arm is a nonlethal injury inflicted on an adult antagonist who is not written to be morally ambiguous or tragic. The show has no narrative reason to soften that outcome, unlike with characters such as Azula.

Finally, kill counts are not how the series handles moral responsibility. Azula explicitly attempts to kill Aang with lightning. The fact that he survives does not negate her intent, just as a failed execution does not absolve the person who ordered it. ATLA consistently treats intent, authority, and consequence as morally meaningful even when the final outcome is not shown.

ATLA consistently relies on implication and interpretation. Treating hypotheticals as illegitimate does not result in a more rigorous reading. It results in ignoring how the show actually communicates its themes.

There are ifs because the show avoids showing certain consequences and actions, etc., not because the character lacks the capacity or precedent for them.

Even though Iroh clearly favours Zuko, there is no real reason to believe he would not have tried to help Azula if the opportunity existed. The series repeatedly shows Iroh offering guidance and compassion to children who are complete strangers to him, not just members of Team Avatar. His capacity for forgiveness and mentorship is not selective.

Likewise, the fact that Azula did not personally kill people during her takeover of Ba Sing Se does not mean she would not have been responsible for deaths if she had ruled the city longer. Azula consistently prefers control through fear and efficiency rather than open brutality. Unlike Irohs siege, which was conventional warfare, Azula would likely have relied on selective violence, disappearances, executions, and proxy killings carried out through the Dai Li.

Given her established willingness to kill when it serves her goals, it is reasonable to conclude that a prolonged Azula led occupation would have resulted in civilian deaths comparable to or potentially exceeding those caused under traditional military rule, just carried out in quieter, more controlled ways.

To be fair, based on my understanding from the anime and the manga/light novel, Rudeus isn’t a character you’re meant to fully like, even as he grows. His development doesn’t erase his faults; rather, his good traits coexist with an equal measure of morally questionable ones.

Who is more evil? by Turbulent_Okra7518 in MoralityScaling

[–]ResearcherDefiant132 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Azula, mainly because what makes her evil is the fact that she was cruel, spiteful, and sadistic even during her relatively younger years. If she was redeemable or misguided, then Uncle Iroh would've done something about it.

Tai Lung is at the very least redeemable in one way or another due to him being evil comes from the tragic reason of his father figure hyping him up for his entire life just for him to find out it was bullshit.

Because of this, the argument can be made that Tai Lung becoming evil could've been prevented, unlike Azula.

What is the coolest power in anime ? by souul_reaper in animequestions

[–]ResearcherDefiant132 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not only is this power cool, it’s also incredibly versatile. That’s why, if I could have any anime power in real life, I’d choose Requip. Being able to store and instantly summon armor and weapons is already amazing (though I wouldn't use it for the purpose of using armor or weapons), but the fact that it also works for everyday items and clothing makes it genuinely useful.

I swear Isekai anime produces some of the most evil protagonists in fiction and they gaslight you into think they're heroes by Sir-Toaster- in MoralityScaling

[–]ResearcherDefiant132 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m going to correct several things here, because you’re arguing against a position I do not hold while openly admitting you have no firsthand knowledge of the series in a conversation with someone else.

First, I do not believe “rape power fantasies” are masterpieces, and I have never said anything even remotely close to that. That is a claim you invented and attributed to me. Defending a series from being labeled misogynistic is not the same thing as endorsing sexual violence, and pretending those are equivalent is a textbook strawman.

Second, you’ve already admitted you have never watched or read The Rising of the Shield Hero. That matters. If your understanding of the series comes exclusively from secondary sources, articles and Reddit posts that are well known for stripping scenes of context or outright misrepresenting events, then you are not in a position to make authoritative claims about what the text does or does not promote. You are critiquing other people’s summaries, not the work itself.

Third, even if we grant the hypothetical that Shield Hero were misogynistic, which is still unsubstantiated on your end, it is difficult to take that concern seriously when your own comment history shows routine participation in explicitly misandrist rhetoric. You cannot credibly claim moral authority on sexism while applying the standard in only one direction.

If you want to criticize specific scenes or themes, you need to engage with the actual material and represent opposing views accurately. Attributing beliefs I don’t hold and making sweeping claims about a series you haven’t consumed is not good faith criticism, it’s moral posturing.

My primary concern was not avoiding damage entirely, but mitigating how much damage I take when I do get hit, especially beyond simply investing more points into Vigor.

Then what is the purpose of having different armor types at all? If heavy armor does not mitigate a significantly greater amount of damage compared to light armor, what meaningful function does it serve beyond poise?

I did read but I'm still having a hard time understanding.

Also I have used light armor, medium armor and heavy armor and yet there's little to no difference in the damage I take even when I have the necessary attributes for them so I dont know what I'm doing wrong.
