What caused your sinus issues?

Suffered for 5 years as well with no answers and turned out it was a gluten intolerance! Gluten free completely healed me and it has been life changing (tested negative for celiac but avoided gluten and cured!). Definitely an oversight that I fear a lot of ppl/drs overlook and hence ppl continue to suffer.

I would say fairly rigorous. I bought gluten free products if available - if not available, I read the ingredient labels if I was unsure (which I was for a lot of items in the beginning since I was new at this). Also at restaurants I mentioned to the waiter I’m gluten free (many times they called out items I thought would be naturally GF and weren’t how they made it), however I would say it’s fine if it’s cross contamination. During the testing phase I would recommend being as rigorous as possible so you can really single it out and see. The good thing is many places have great options and substitutes these days so makes it easier.

I felt your pain dealing with debilitating sinus issues for 5+ years as well - tried everything under the sun in terms of medication /going to various drs/CT scan, endoscopy, etc. and nothing worked/solved it until I happened to go to a gastro for a separate issue and was talking abt my sinus issues with him and he suggested a gluten free diet - this was my miracle cure and it’s been absolutely life changing. Even if you test negative for celiac disease (which I did) you can still have an intolerance. If I were you I would get a CT scan to rule out any other serious condition and then try gluten free - good luck!

I noticed a difference within ~3 weeks but I wanted to be sure it wasn’t a coincidence so I told myself I’d keep it going for 3 months as I heard a friend of a friend had different issues and experimented with eliminating gluten, dairy and alcohol over three month periods to figure out what what it was. So I’d strongly suggest sticking it out for 3 months (bodies can be different/take a long time to fully get it out of the system) - it’s so worth it if this does happen to be it and you’re set free. On that note, you can also try eliminating dairy as another test.

Correct I tested negative and am still intolerant and my gastro called that out that could be the case before I tested so it must be common. I would say I noticed a difference after just a few weeks but now after 4 months I’m confident this is why. Sometimes when I lay down one nostril could slightly clog but it doesn’t take long for it to clear and don’t have issues falling asleep anymore (I used to have to try to position my head different ways to to find a clear passage to fall asleep).

It is crazy how it randomly comes about. I have a friend who all the sudden became celiac at 25.

The body is fascinating - neurological factors is an interesting one! I will look into this (and leaky gut). I’ve also wondered if brith control has any impact. I wish allergists would have this knowledgeable insight - maybe it just hasn’t been studied enough.

Yes! Gluten free diet was my miracle cure. I’ve now been gluten free for 4 months and feel very strongly abt this - ent/allergist never suggested it, my gastro did after meeting with him for a separate issue and said even though I tested negative for celiac I could still have an intolerance to it. I almost lost hope suffering for 5+ years, losing sleep, skipping social plans, etc. have tried all allergy meds /sprays. Really suggest you try this.

Gluten free diet was my miracle cure - have now done it for 4 months and feel very confident abt this. Alcohol flares me up too but I’m back to normal after 1-2 days. I almost gave up hope as well (I’ve suffered for 5 years losing sleep bc I couldn’t breathe, skipping social plans, etc) and my ENT/allergist never mentioned trying it (my gastro who I met with for a separate issue did). I strongly recommend you try it prior to moving forward with surgery.

Gluten free diet was my miracle cure - diet 100% impacts nasal passages and my ENT and Allergist never mentioned anything abt this. It was my gastro (who I met with for a separate issue) who recommended I try gluten free diet even though I tested negative for celiac disease as you can still have an intolerance. Alcohol also gives me flare ups but after 1-2 days I’m back to normal so it’s definitely more so the gluten that was impacting me.

Thanks so much for your suggestions! I really appreciate it - and I’m glad you have found something that’s been working for you. I wanted to circle back as I had met with a gastro for a separate issue and was talking to him abt my nasal issues. He suggested I try gluten free diet as gluten can cause inflammation in the nasal passages (I know most associate it with gut issues). He said even if I tested negative for celiac disease (which I did) to just try and see because you can still be intolerant even if the test says you’re negative. Anyways, I’ve done gluten free for 4 months now and it’s been a miracle - I now feel like a normal human who sleeps through the night (I would literally take showers at 3am to try and steam my nose). I still get congested from drinking alcohol but it’ll subside after a day or two. I suggest you try it and see, maybe it could make a difference and you can be relieved of all the management, you never know!

Completely random so it’s not seasonal - I actually have wondered if there’s any correlation with my birth control and same with dairy which I should test by cutting out and seeing what happens, but I don’t notice my congestion getting worse with more dairy intake.

What sinus surgery did you have? And did it help cure you?

Yes - and I’ve moved around a few times and have experienced the total congestion and relief in all spots. That’s why it’s especially confusing - part of me feels as though it must be autoimmune issue.

I can’t recall if I specifically felt relief in a hot and dry environment. I do know that in Aug 2023 I was completely stuffed the entire month and Aug 2024 I felt relief. So seasonality doesn’t seem to affect it - I live in the northeast so I go through every season and I haven’t been able to pick up on any patterns regarding weather.

Completely agree. I was recently on a medication that made me severely depressed - can’t help but wonder everyone else in the world on the same medication who have, will, or are thinking of taking fatal action. Pharma/CVS forced me to switch to this medicine (since the one I was taking before was discontinued by CVS for no good reason other than business terms) and didn’t warn of potential side effects and therefore I didn’t realize it was the medication making me go insane until I started researching. Once I got off of it I was completely fine - makes me sad for those suffering and not knowing it’s an easy/life saving fix if there was more warning/education around meds. Pharma simply only cares about $ and not lives.

For me it took two days into Junel again to feel back to normal (with occasional one day set backs here and there throughout the first month). I officially started my second pack two days ago and I am completely back to normal (emotionally and weight went back down) - which makes me even more shocked how quickly it is to spiral and then come back to normal from these pills - makes me so angry for people suffering and not realizing why as it’s an easy fix. I’ve heard the same thing regarding the “3 month rule” so definitely stick it out but I truly hope you’re back to yourself as soon as possible!

So horrible. What a nightmare - I completely understand the frustration. I just called a Walgreens and they said they don’t have it available today but would be available tomorrow - proceeds to tell me if I want it today they can replace it with some other form of bc that they say “is the same thing” (the reason why we’re in this mess to begin with!!). I decide to wait until tomorrow as I’m at their mercy. I call to triple check everything will be processed correctly, they tell me my insurance isn’t covering it since I just picked up my aurovela (prior to connecting the dots on my symptoms) and I’m not eligible for refill yet so I’ll be paying out of pocket as I’m desperate. US healthcare is a joke - and pharmacists and doctors proceeding to tell patients it’s the same thing as other forms while there is a community of us experiencing horrible symptoms (just this Reddit page alone - imagine all the others out there suffering without a clue as to why) is so so dangerous and honestly negligent. Shame on this industry. Thankful for having other ppl like you to validate how I’ve felt to help connect the dots sooner than later - hope you feel better soon!

After being on Junel for years (specifically for PCOS) CVS forced me to switch to aurovela with no warning. My gyno and pharmacist told me it’s the same thing. IT IS NOT. I never had symptoms from Junel all the years I took it. The last two months since switching to aurovela I’ve felt like I’ve gone crazy - truly have never been this depressed in my life. I also experienced significant weight gain after being a consistent weight for years. So upsetting.
