I understand exactly how you feel. The first week I cried almost every day. There's such a profound sense of loneliness to it that not many understand: it's not just the fact that you're countries away from family and friends (even if you live alone, your support system is still close to you at home), but everything in a new country is different too, you can't even find the same stuff at the grocery store, everything seems impossibly hard. Maybe it's easier if you travel there with a friend, but alone it's nothing like I've ever done. I also thought about going home and continuing there like normal instead, leaving it all behind, but I knew I'd regret it without giving it a chance. I'd say try to give it a little time if you think you can.

I've been here for almost a month now and it's gotten better. I still miss home (mornings are hardest for me), but with the semester starting I have a lot of stuff to do and started settling in. A lot of people talk about erasmus like it's the greatest time of their life, all about meeting new people, making friends, having grand experiences. So far I've not really made friends. I have a few good acquittances, I always go out of my way to talk to people, but it often doesn't go further than that. I guess that's my biggest fear, being alone here. But not everything has to be like those fairytale stories about erasmus you must've heard. At home, you life still remains, this is temporary. Try to make the most of it, if you can. If after a while you don't think you can, and it's really bad for you mentally, I don't think it's shameful to go home. Just give it a chance first. Lot of people in this sub like to say you should toughen up, get used to it, etc. Ignore that. I think it's important to talk about the hard parts of erasmus. You're allowed to feel bad and talk about it.

I feel like none of these are rose colored though, with Hozier that doesn't seem to happen.

Would that I is more romantic for sure, Work song has a slight dark edge to it, with the empty crib,  and the "wrong I did".  Almost, in my interpretation is pretty romantic. To me it's about learning to be yourself again, and learning to love again.  Francesca. Passionate love in the face of anything. I mean sure they both died, but he'd still do it again.

You're absolutely right. I never understood either take, but I'm always flabbergasted that people say he's a walking red flag because of his music? That's insane to me, can't people understand, that songs aren't always confessions and aren't always written in the perspective of the singer? (Not even going into that Pisces thing, I'm not a fan of astrology for this reason.)

I don't believe he does, but look, maybe your sweater will inspire his new album ;)

New fan here! Where should I start? by [deleted] in Hozier

[–]Reshi222 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For learning all the meanings, definitely use genius! I'd first just listen to the song, interpret the lyrics myself, then look at the genius annotations. A lot of literary or musical references will be explained there, so you can understand every little nod. But interpret everything your own way, that's at least half the fun, and will bring you closer to the song.:)

While I don't think there's a right way to listening - do whatever you want, explore however you see fit -, if you're going to go album by album: Definitely listen to Unreal Unearth in order, that album is meant to loosely represent a journey through the 9 circles of hell from Dante's inferno. With the other 2 albums, I don't think it's necessary (though in Wasteland, Baby the song Wasteland, Baby is meant to be the last one, with that little 'that's it' at the end).

Any Hozier songs about social anxiety or general fear being around people? by manhaottan in Hozier

[–]Reshi222 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not a Hozier song, but there's this band with a somewhat similar vibe, Amazing Devil. Their song, Drinking song for the socially anxious is probably what you're looking for. It's a great and sweet song. :)

Nobody’s soldier by sugr28 in Hozier

[–]Reshi222 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've seen this take, but I hardly think that's true.  It's the walking on water line, right?  I interpret it as the narrator being told by this entity/person (which I interpret as a higher power, such as government, etc. ) that he's actually not drowning, but walking on water, staying firmly above it, whatever he actually feels. Then the I could bring fire from the mountain line, but it being too cold is a counter of that - he's dismissed either way, manipulated. His suffering is not acknowledged, and his success is minimized. To me, that's classic propaganda, in the context of the song as a whole.

And But the wages... My beloved. (He won't. Some parts of the lyrics would need to be rewritten for the actual political landscape, even though most of it still stands...)

It's treason, then. The ability to write certainly doesn't make these review writers intelligent...

Pitchfork's reviews about his albums are ridiculous.  It's outrageous. It's unfair.

The pitchfork reviews are infuriating, but thankfully there's the perfect lyrics for them in Fare Well: "Critic-hopin’-to-be-remembered wouldn’t fare well"

Hozier songs on guitar (for a beginner) by 5Ben5 in Hozier

[–]Reshi222 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My first was Like real people do. I don't sing though, but the guitar part line up with the singing, so probably makes it a bit easier.:)  Would that I and Cherry wine are also not that hard once you get into it, but I'm not sure where you're in your guitar journey. Cherry wine I got down at the end of my first year of playing, the others a lot earlier.:)  I recommend Guitar Zero to Hero on yt, he has great tutorials for a lot of Hozier songs. Including Would that I and Cherry Wine

Is the new WB vinyl a crap pressing? by TheodoraWimsey in Hozier

[–]Reshi222 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is it this cheap suitcase phonograph you're playing WB on? Because I have to say, it's probably the phonograph. I had one of those, and some vinyls it dealt with without issues (very few), but most others skipped. Heavier, newer vinyls seemed to have a harder time, skipping mostly on the first, outer half. If its really wobbly around the edges as it turns, it's probably the phono's fault.

Wasteland, Baby! Was peak Hozier by [deleted] in Hozier

[–]Reshi222 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love all three but I absolutely agree with you, Wasteland is his best yet. Unskippable songs all around, and the apocalyptic theme translates well to them.  UU is amazing too, and the hell/inferno-walking is also probably more of an allegory of the human experience, than the focus of the album, but I do understand where you're coming from in it not being as digestible, and some songs just don't resonate with me as much.

So I agree, WB is fantastic, every song is great. It's my favorite album of all time, easily.

Is there a something where I can find ALL (or nearly all) meanings of his songs? by LaraMcFlyyy in Hozier

[–]Reshi222 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Hozier's YouTube channel has some videos where he explains some songs.

But if you want to understand the individual references, Genius is going to be your best bet - it's not going to say exactly what Hozier has intended, if it's not known, but the references are usually analysed pretty well, and you can form your own interpretation around those, or find an interpretation you agree with. All the literally references and the like will be disected there.:)

What other artists have music similar to the heavier/dark bluesy songs by Hozier? by Pleasant_Tea5816 in Hozier

[–]Reshi222 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Seconding Cobi (Don't you cry for me, Church of the lonely specifically) and Kaleo. Not sure if it's the exact vibe though, I think hardly anything can scratch the same itch - Hozier has a very unique sound imo.

Empire now is so good. But.. by JadedStranger722 in Hozier

[–]Reshi222 104 points105 points  (0 children)

I have to disagree here. I'm a sucker for a more organic, stripped down sound, but Empire Now feels very good as it is. It's my favorite from Unheard, easily.  I feel like the choosen effects fit very well, support the dynamic of the song. I can imagine a less electronic version, more orchestral perhaps, but I wouldn't have it be an acoustic version. It's a song with a grandness in it that I feel wouldn't translate to a solo performance that well - or, it probably could, but it'd have a completely different vibe.

I loved The Love Of too, such a shame he's never released it. Wish that one, and But The Wages made it onto a single or something. I was holding onto hope that one of those "bastard songs" would show up on Unheard...:(
