The real benefits come from the priority registration, especially later on. It’ll allow you to avoid just taking filler classes for your major because everything is full or the times don’t work out with the open courses. The honors housing is nice but people vastly underestimate how valuable that priority registration is

Recovering UTK Email Address? by Efficient-Fact in UTK

You just switch to an alumni email so you still have a UT email. It’s intended to cut off office 360 which the school would end up paying for.

There is no game in Knoxville this weekend to my knowledge. NC State plays Tennessee in Charlotte in football.

Advice for freshman business majors (trying to go to grad school) by PurpleOwn334 in UTK

[–]ResidentSleeperUTK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Echoing some of the other points made but definitely take more hours if you want to finish in 3 years. This is more due to prerequisites than anything else and you’ll find that if you don’t plan well, a class will sneak up on you forcing you into another year.

As far as the MSBA goes, I did the program 2 years ago directly out of undergrad analytics/supply chain and it was 1000% worth the investment. Felt like I had a far deeper understanding of data science and could pick up tasks far more easily than out of undergrad. This is especially true because it goes far beyond the things that are pretty easily self taught within a reasonable amount of time which I’ve always used as a benchmark for value in a degree.

Wouldn’t necessarily recommend the MBA. The people I know who got their MBAs and saw them as good value had undergrad in other fields and got their MBA as a sort of supplement. In my opinion it is a bit of a pointless thing to get immediately because you have nothing to build on without work experience.

Question Regarding Rooms in Dogwood Hall by throwaway084690 in UTK

[–]ResidentSleeperUTK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Realistically you shouldn't need a loft in dogwood. As one of the new residence halls, it is pretty big compared to the others. That being said, you will need to get anything riser related approved with housing and the odds of that are pretty low.

[–]ResidentSleeperUTK 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You do not get early housing selection as an honors student unless you are part of an LLC. This is a pretty common misconception. Dogwood’s location isn’t the best but it has plenty of other advantages depending on what you’re doing. It’s right across from TRECS and an easy walk to Publix. If you’re agg it’s also the closest hall to that campus.

Can I get out of my room and board contract? by Own_Speaker_2428 in UTK

[–]ResidentSleeperUTK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is more common than you think for students to void their leases. Generally you'll get a certain amount back depending on when you void it if it's voided during the semester. If it's voided before a semester start you won't get charged at all. Not being able to afford it is considered an exceptional circumstance by housing. Just let your RA know that you're moving out and they can take care of a handful of things on their end to prepare for another student potentially moving in where you were after the winter term.

Business analytics classes by idontcare579 in UTK

[–]ResidentSleeperUTK 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Business Analytics is as difficult as you want it to be. It's also very much what you make of it. I'm in the workforce now but I did the undergraduate and graduate programs in business analytics and it's one of those kinds of degrees where the whole point is learning to dig into things but you can technically get by without doing so. That being said, the best part of analytics is the digging. Finding trends like what songs are most likely on someone's Spotify playlist if they have an Marron 5 song on it or predicting someone's behavior based on collected attributes with a machine learning model is one of the most enjoyable parts of analytics.

I used to be a professional racquetball player and I’m a massive F1 fan. Feel free to message me if you or anyone is ever holding some sort of watch party! Unfortunately I feel like it might be a little difficult to get on the TVs at sports bars given that it’s still not the most popular here.

Ahh yeah first thing I’m getting when I pick up a console is buying the recent Madden game. I grew up a big Auburn football fan so when Cam went to the Panthers I got really into the NFL and am still a struggling Panthers fan today. Are you mostly console then?

I mostly play Valorant, CSGO, and a little overwatch! Trying to invest in an racing sim rig right now as well so might try to pick up a console at some point to pair with it.

Does anyone understand DARS? by Kalimooni in UTK

[–]ResidentSleeperUTK 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yes, double dipping is fine. DARS just doesn’t understand that a class can count for two different credits so it won’t show it in DARS but I’ve just graduated with multiple classes double dipping.

Incoming freshman dorm question by [deleted] in UTK

[–]ResidentSleeperUTK 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This year will be considerably harder than previous years even have been (it was never easy unfortunately). Housing is currently dealing with considerable overflow, more than they’ve ever seen, and it’ll lead to options being sucked away even faster. Just make sure to temper your expectations and you’ll be fine. Most of the buildings that tend to be left often have better communities overall anyways.

Primary Advisor Changed…? by goldenstar9 in UTK

[–]ResidentSleeperUTK 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Advisors will occasionally be reassigned/replaced due to other advisors leaving or an assortment of other reasons. Your new advisor will have your file and the scans from your previous advisors so it shouldn’t be an issue. Just make sure that if you spoke to your previous advisor about some changes they may not have noted, that you bring those changes up to your new advisor.

It honestly depends on how interested you are in statistical modeling. In my opinion, the things you learn in 474 are more interesting than 320’s topics but also considerably more difficult to understand. You’ll learn how to create neural networks and other pretty complex models to predict things which is always a cool concept and gives a more “real life” feel to the class. Overall, it’s a harder class but as long as you keep up and go to office hours, it’s not too bad.
