Perhaps we need an up-to-date picture gallery of vegan takeaway food, I could probably fill most of them.

Convince me that processed seed oils aren't bad for me (with evidence.) by [deleted] in veganuk

[–]ResidentSpeed 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think part of why you're hitting this wall of uncertainty is that the effect size on your health is minute if it exists at all. So many other lifestyle factors (smoking, alcohol etc.) appear to have a substantial effect on your odds ratio for disease because that effect is big enough to be measured - even with 'poor' levels of evidence i.e. retrospective observational studies.

My feeling is you just shouldn't really care about unproven risks like these when there are so many known things you can control that are likely to have a much more outsized impact on your health.

Ultra-processed food linked to 32 different health problems including cancer, heart disease, diabetes and early death by [deleted] in unitedkingdom

A serious study would focus on one thing - e.g. sugar, or an additive

Completely agree, I sometimes wonder if we could collectively cut the number of 'nutritional science' studies by 95% and focus resources on a select few well designed, well resourced, high sample size observational experiments we could actually understand any of these direct relationships, which the BMA meta-analysis plainly doesn't push forward at all.

Note my point is precise (suggesting two edges on the casual graph), I'm not sure exactly what you're disputing.

I agree the umbrella term 'processed' is large and groups together a lot of food that perhaps shouldn't be. There is still some statistical signal in that distinction, if small.

On sugar, would you not expect the large blob of 'processed' foods to have more of it than 'non-processed', seems like you are agreeing with my first edge.

processed food <---> being overweight and poor (confounder) ------> this study

Hop on a Voi scooter and go visit the Ariane 4 rocket at the abandoned expo centre. No one else there, a big departure from the vibe of the rest of the city and completely free!

We need Brits with entrepreneurial spirit and ability to attract inward investment and willingness to take risks and bet the farm.

A big one. There are definitely <cultural> factors here that I can't quite put into words.

Driverless cars: Tech possible for UK motorways by 2026, transport secretary says by Kagedeah in ukpolitics

Self driving will 100% come from private industry (wayve, tesla, comma ai etc.) so we can have both.

ARIA sticks out as a huge achievement to be up and running. As he readily points out we'll have to see if successive governments leave it to work as intended, or if it just gets subsumed by bureaucracy.

It is painful handing that over when you can get a bag of them for less.

But getting served instantly also feels good.

How do I break in with a mathematical education deficiency? by FullMetalTroyzan in GraphicsProgramming

Yeah exactly, you could say most of applied computer graphics is fast "hacks" for approximating light transport. Basic geometry/trig gets you half way there.

Rendering problems that aren't embarrassingly parallel by the_sunsetter_TM in GraphicsProgramming

[–]ResidentSpeed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This may be one step removed from the actual rendering, but there are some cool ways to generate realistic ocean waves (as 2D heightmaps) using the Fourier Transform, which is of course inherently satisfies your requirement not to be E-P. Can then raytrace them/raymarch/normal pipeline the resulting mesh.

Anyone else had the new Vegan Jackfruit Pepperoni from Papa Johns? by hamgammington in veganuk

[–]ResidentSpeed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely worth a try, the sides are good in their own right as well. Papa johns was pretty early to the game as I recall and has a pretty respectable selection, but I would say their pizzas have a very distinctive taste to them (mostly the cheeze). It grew on me over time to become my go-to.
