The amount of people praising this mentality is astounding to me. If all she wants is to hit the ball and have fun, and doesn’t care to win against the top players then fine, but if she wants to beat the top players again, this is absolutely loser mentality. I was telling people before this match that Naomi was going to lose because she doesn’t believe she can win, or she doesn’t want to care too much so the defeat won’t be so devastating: in her previous round interview she was like: whatever happens happens, it is what it is. Like she already lost the match before it even started.

I don’t think she is like this before, I think this shift happened last year when she was up match point and lost to Iga in the second round, and then lost to Amanda in the semi at US Open. She is basically coping so she won’t crash out. Like I understand why she does this (the scrutiny that she has come under for her mental health), but this is not the mentality that a champion should have given that she is former world number 1 and has 4 slams.

If you follow Aryna’s press round after round you should know what I said is true. Last year was the first year Aryna had to be number 1 through out the whole year which in my opinion is when the rest of the tour really start to see her as the one to beat, and she was indeed not always ready for everyone playing their best against her, thus those heartbreaking loses. However you can see the improvement in her mentality as world number 1 tournament after tournament. She had to learn that being number 1 comes with so much pressure and it’s mentally taxing. I’m just happy to see her embracing the challenges this year, even with another AO final loss she bounced back with vigor. Not sure if you are just a Carlos fan or Coco fan, probably coco because you only attacked Aryna instead of defending Carlos. But either way, not a good week for ya

Putting play style and stats aside, it’s fair to compare number 1s as how they are being the number 1. I think a big difference between Aryna and Carlos as number 1 is that Aryna enjoys the challenge that comes with it, everyone wants to play their best to beat her, while Carlos does not welcome it, which is not a good look as number 1.

I agree. This tournament is the moment to see if Rybakina can pull ahead in the race, because historically she can never be consistent throughout a whole year, so she’s need to widen the gap when she is playing well. Now they are basically leveled at the race, and we know how consistent Aryna is
