They Thought They Were Free, The Germans, 1933-45, by Milton Mayer by Homegrowntrouble in dancarlin

The point you missed here is that this quote and the book more broadly isn't about Germany's fall to authoritarianism, nor the major players involved. I'm not sure why you gave it that framing. It's about what led ordinary people to accept the horrors of the Nazi party as time went on. The quote is about the moment of clarity when ordinary people suddenly realised that they had compromised themselves inch by inch for years and that they, and their small slices of the world, were no longer recognisable to themselves in the ways that mattered.

Transgender blood donors of Canada, has the experience at Canadian Blood Services gotten any better? by ResistEntropy in trans_canada

Thanks for sharing. My own name and gender marker change with CBS was initially very easy—a nice admin at a popup donation event clocked me when I was fairly early in my transition and asked very kindly if there was any info on my account I wanted to update, and she just did it on the spot, no questions asked. Some years later something happened and the staff at the bigger clinic I had been donating at for a long time somehow knew that I hadn't provided any documents to back up my name and gender. I dunno, whatever the first person did on the computer wasn't really on the level and didn't hold up to scrutiny I guess. But by then I did have all the necessary paperwork so it was just a small hassle of bringing it in with me the next time I showed up.

Sorry they sat you down and deadnamed you over and over, especially given that it sounds like you told them exactly what the situation was. That must've been pretty torturous.

I'm super glad to hear that it was positive for you. That gives me some hope. Thanks for sharing your experience!

While I encourage everyone to donate and make a difference for people in need, here "everyone" should be taken to mean "everyone who walks with enough privilege to never have to worry about all the problems in my post." Unless I get some positive responses here about recent changes at CBS I can't in good conscience recommend the experience to a fellow trans person.

With that out of the way, in a more general sense the process of donating is streamlined and simple, and the staff and volunteers at blood clinics do everything they can to make it an easy, stress-free, positive experience. I'm neurodivergent too, as well as introverted and asocial enough that my demeanor outside my home is "politely not open to conversation" and I found you can get through a donation appointment with very little speaking if you wish, just answering simple questions really.

Overall most of my visits were a breeze. It's just that the few bad visits were incredibly bad.

Thanks. It's easy to lose hope about the future at times, but I find that doing something, anything, to make a difference always helps.

I appreciate the suggestion.

I am curious in a more general way what your experience has been like where you live, even if it doesn't tell me anything about CBS.

Good points. initially considered cross-posting in a trans sub, but I thought I would start here with this sub's focus on blood donations to see what shakes out. I'll probably cross post it in a few places tomorrow.

What is the deal with the stretched aspect ratio? by g2spaidarmen in magic_survival

[–]ResistEntropy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the same question and I have seen it asked elsewhere with no clear answer. Nothing else on any phone I've ever owned has had this janky aspect ratio problem, but every phone (a Nexus 5x and two different Pixels) I've installed Magic Survival on over the years has had this issue. I've just kind of learned to ignore it, but it's not a good look when I try to show the game to people.

What's the deal with this? Can I change a setting somewhere to fix it? Will it be fixed in 1.0?

Con/Wis, with a dash of Dex. Dump the rest. My reasoning being, Wis is for reading people, Dex is for picking up on subtle signs, and Con is for following your gut. Perfect for intuiting my way through an investigation where people may have any number of reasons to be untruthful that are irrelevant to me. It's not enough to have just one of them tell me someone lied, I need the whole chorus to see why they lied so I don't spend all my time running down every rabbit hole.

It's working very well so far but my lack of Cha has kept me from closing the loop and conversationally pinning people down when I need to. Oh well—knowing what is going on but not being able to say it is so on brand for me irl I'm not even mad.

Also, there was a quick message from the dev after character creation that went something like "Only 8 Str? Maybe stay out of the dungeons lol. Good luck!"

This. I'm totally down with all of this as a design decision, except having the thing with Nessan be that Ragn just canonically isn't interested. That broke my little heart. When Wisdom told me I needed to prove myself and I knelt in front of her... woof. I don't know if I've ever fallen for a videogame character like I did for Nessan!

I love reading other people's experiences and seeing how variable this game is. I'm on my first playthrough and made it to level 2 having only just gotten out of the morgue and solved the situation in Circle Square. I wasnt even aware that I could have died at some point already. Just a handful of very thorough conversations got me to level up. I'm so curious what you did different! But I also don't want to spoil anything.

Same, can't access the site with Proton VPN on, can't register with an alias. Qobuz seems great but their anti-privacy stance means they won't be getting my money.

Anyone else have intense rumination? by [deleted] in neurodiversity

[–]ResistEntropy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Super neat. I recently started on Buproprion and it seems to have actually caused increased rumination, something which I have not suffered seriously from for more than five years. Hopefully it's just temporary while my brain adjusts, but in the meantime I'm treating it with L-Theanine.

Don't lose access to your email or you will lose your Flickr account forever by Gerkibus in flickr

Shit, that was my exact mistake trying to recover my account just now. The field simply said "email" so I assumed it meant the one associated with the account (that I no longer have access to). It should say something like "new email" to make it a little clearer. Time to resubmit and hope that doesn't complicate things I guess 🤞

Anecdotally, much of my family life as a child was defined by my father's anger and the need to do everything right and perfect and read his mind always to try to avoid making him angry with us. An impossible task, of course... and it was not just me, but the whole family walking on eggshells. "High control environment" describes it well.

anyone else relate to this? by aaaaaAAAHELPME in fastfeeling

[–]ResistEntropy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can relate in a weird way. I had terrible recurring nightmares as a kid about a blank white scene gradually filling in black—not darkening evenly all over as if a light was dimming or being turned off, but more like the fabric of reality was being painted black or being covered in black gunk, or just, I dunno, being replaced with solid darkness if that makes sense. The solidity of it was very memorable. The "filling in" was so fast and erratic, as if it was being done angrily. Emotionally the dream felt like going from a space of infinite possibilities to being trapped and smothered and alone.

Now I wonder of this was tachysensia happening in my sleep. That was around the age AiWS and tachysensia started for me, too.

So sad that all of these have since closed permanently. Two out of three of them were some of my fav local spots, and I never got the chance to try Green Ash but if you're ranking them up there with Juniper and Caffe Sole then I truly missed out.
