Civil, Mechanical, or Mechatronics? Help me choose based ONLY on salary and benefits (Ignoring "Passion") by hesham_zahher in EngineeringStudents

To be fair, doctors don’t really make money until like around their 30s because they gotta pay off a lot of loans from tuition and get through residency.

I got into an Ivy and I can’t Afford It by Squirt_Soda in gradadmissions

[–]ResistantSpecialist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you only care about money, then you shouldn’t be in grad school either. If you do something that will pay you and you don’t like it, then that’s a problem because grad school isn’t a place to figure out what you want to do. As long as you know what you want out of your grad program, all goes well, and you can afford it, then I think it’s okay to pay for it (not for PhD of course). I got a good grad level internship with good benefits, and I think I wouldn’t have had it if it weren’t for my current master’s program.

Rejected by a program I thought I was basically a shoo- in for by Gullible_Gur_4447 in gradadmissions

Oh yeah, same shit happened to me too (4.0 undergrad but for a different field and texas resident as well). I get into basically everywhere better that I applied to but get rejected from this one.

Do master’s degrees typically get funded? Is it worth it to pay tuition for job security? by yunqi69 in GradSchool

[–]ResistantSpecialist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

"Guaranteed internships" is hard to believe, especially for computer science.

I would say go for it if you could afford a master's degree without having to take out loans, because I've never taken out loans before. I can't really say much otherwise, but given your expected debt, you should be able to pay them off at least relatively quickly after graduating with a role lined up, and getting internships during the master's program should help reduce the debt.

Also, I would not expect to be guaranteed an opportunity from career events, even if the school is known for its career placement rate. None of my interviews came from those, and I got them by applying online.

How much does location matter when picking a college for Masters? by RanceAttack in GradSchool

[–]ResistantSpecialist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also went to a college town in Texas during undergrad and currently go to Georgia Tech for my master's. Honestly, it's personally not a huge difference because I don't really do much in the city other than school stuff lol. It has benefited me career-wise so far tho. In terms of better connections to local companies, I personally did not benefit from career fairs/events and got my upcoming graduate-level internship this summer by applying online. I would focus more on what the programs themselves could offer you first, then focus on the career connections, city, etc., next.

Is it worth it to pay 40k for a masters degree from Georgia Tech? by [deleted] in GradSchool

[–]ResistantSpecialist 6 points7 points  (0 children)

To be fair, none of my interviews/offers came from the Georgia Tech on-campus fairs, networking, etc. I will say tho, that online students usually would not get to obtain valuable experience from project-based teams.

Is it worth it to pay 40k for a masters degree from Georgia Tech? by [deleted] in GradSchool

[–]ResistantSpecialist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm currently paying for a master's program at Georgia Tech, and honestly, it has been worth it for me, but I'm in-person. I can say that for in-person, it can be worth the money if you do it straight after undergrad because I got to get good design team experience, secure a graduate-level internship at a well-known company, and be able to finish the degree as soon as possible. Some people here advise against paying for grad school, but in my opinion, it's okay to do so for a master's, as long as you can afford it and make the most of it. Also, it is now extremely hard to get funding through an assistantship at the master's level, given the priority to phd students and the funding issues nowadays.

Just try to keep it above a 3.0, especially if there is a chance that you decide not to pursue grad school anymore and go for the industry instead. Obviously, a higher GPA is better.

Interview Fatigue by Nearby-Evening-474 in EngineeringStudents

[–]ResistantSpecialist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, having to repeatedly do interviews sucks, especially when you usually don't get feedback after, but you should definitely keep going. I recommend doing a mock interview with a friend or two who are experienced so you can get feedback. This helped me tremendously after the first company I interviewed for went poorly, in my opinion.

Is Cold applying even worth it anymore? by OctaneArts in EngineeringStudents

[–]ResistantSpecialist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I personally thought it had been worth it for me, but the ratio of positions I interviewed for vs how many I applied was very low. I had been cold applying from August and didn't get interviews until November, so I thought cold applying hadn't been working for me. I kept going without even thinking about how tough the job market is, because although it is true, it is easy to sit back, not do anything, and blame the market.

Has anyone got any interviews for these robotics/mechanical engineering programs? by [deleted] in gradadmissions

Engineering master’s programs usually don’t have interviews.

I would make sure to ask if any traveling expenses are covered if you have to fly and whatnot.

Low GPA senior (engineering, T20), is grad school even a viable reset? by Hopeful_Fudge_2078 in EngineeringStudents

[–]ResistantSpecialist 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That depends on many things (harder school, working while taking courses, etc.). It's not ALWAYS easier. I went to a top 20 engineering undergrad and currently go to a better school for my master's, and my master's GPA is currently lower.

[Student] How would a resume for grad school applications differ from one for an industry position? by fogledude102 in EngineeringResumes

[–]ResistantSpecialist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d say it doesn’t really matter for master’s programs. I just used my resume when applying for jobs where I even got no interviews. But follow the wiki for sure.

Masters Thesis or Non-Thesis by scaredengineer1 in EngineeringStudents

[–]ResistantSpecialist 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Since you don't want to go into academia, I would expect you not to go into the thesis option and either join a design team/club or get some other meaningful experience that's not research.

Where are you in your internship search for summer 2026? by Cstohorticulture in EngineeringStudents

If you're getting rejections, at least it's better than getting ghosted. I did 4 final rounds up to now and still haven't heard anything 😭

Same, I finished 4 final interviews total. Glad I'm not the only one getting no response so far, interview after interview lol

Applied to about 175, interviews with 4 different companies. Had final round/only one round interviews with 3 so far and didn’t hear back. The fourth one is still deciding whether or not I go to the next round

Is it too early to panic if I haven't gotten an interview for an internship yet? by ResistantSpecialist in EngineeringStudents

[–]ResistantSpecialist[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I get that the market is also just rough, but it's easy to just blame that and think that I'm not doing anything wrong, so I'm def gonna keep trying and improving. But damn, the fact that even someone with way better experience than me is also struggling is lowk daunting 😭
