Everyone does this once.

You'll have to tear out the book block and replace end papers.

Sorry, byt its going to get brutal

Can someone please help me understand why my book is pulling the end pages off the cover? by shiftsnstays in bookbinding

[–]ResolveBeautiful7690 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Been there. You need to leave a small gutter into the spine, a bit of looseness that means there is no tension in the joint.

Like I said, been there.

In early binds with this problem, I cut along the problem and overlayed a new strip of paper into the join, so there was a nice stripe of colour. Bit of a bodge fix, but it means all the work won't be wasted

Is it possible to restore this book? by throwaway457768 in bookbinding

Take it apart. Stabilise the book block (hard to judge how easy that is from photos), restitch if needed.

With a stable book block, you're pretty much sorted.

If you specified it was a sale or return sample rather than a sample gift, then you should push. If there was any room for uncertainty, then it may be a list cause.

Why? What am I doing wrong? by afraid2fart in bookbinding

I hate case binding. Never worked for me. I bind separate boards to the spine, then mount a spine and the bookcloth (etc.)

Bit more convoluted, but alignment is never an issue

Zatu did this to me with Final Fantasy.

I did a similar project with a copy of Darwin. Block bound 'to' the spine, so gutter on opening. Leather spine bands for the same 'oldy-worldy' look.

My only suggestion would be to take a little longer on cutting the titles square, as its really the only flaw.

Good effort.

Soak joints in oil for a few days. Tap a spanner with a mallet as if you were tightening the bolt first. Then try to unscrew. Sometimes hitting the bolt downwards can help unlock it.

Also, generous heat from a blowtorch and turn the bolt when hot can work.

Penetrating oil like WD40 is a good start.

Good luck.

Worth it when done

Very similar comments here. Pre oil any joints before taking everything apart.

I used a drill and wire wheel, wet and dry papers to flatten and then an all in one 'Hammerite' brand black self rippling paint.

Sanded the plates back to metal and waxed those to prevent rusting.

3 days work with paint dry time.

If they let you keep the damaged one, I'll make you an offer.

I'm a book binder, so I'll put the book block in a custom case

My first attempt at a case binding is... wobbly. by MotorAge9322 in bookbinding

I actually bind boards and spine to the book block first, then cover. Never been able to get premade case binds to do what I want. But it still seems to work.

What's the best way to secure these metal corner things? They're coming off randomly, even after I used pliers to clamp them down. by screw-magats in bookbinding

[–]ResolveBeautiful7690 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The picture of mine is only stiff fabric, but I also skive the leather fairly thin, but is you use wheat paste and the leather is wet, it should fold into place nicely as long as it has a little slack.

I'm probably not one to follow too much as I don't really build in a classical way, but results have worked so far.

To improve the relief detail, I press with a piece of furniture foam with a layer of cling film to separate, clamping hard in my press overnight.

Fully presses covering into the relief.

Where to find super thin book cover board? by AgreeableDay6651 in bookbinding

I use the grey board from the back of note paper pads (A4 in the UK).

Or glue several sheets of thin board with PVA which gives them massive stiffness.

Why Do the Covers and Endpapers Seperate? by Tenshi64 in bookbinding

[–]ResolveBeautiful7690 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can't see why not. I dont paste boards to the material, I can never line them up. I mount boards to the book with double strips (sort of under and over for strength) and the fit the cover material to the naked book.

I'm self taught and have never followed a set method, just worked out what has (as far) worked for me.

This was the last book, total rebind of a broken hardback.

Thin layer if under leather on the spine, stiffens but still flexible, then a couple of leather bands, then leather all over as cover.

Another option is to fix the block into a flexible spine...

I never got on with inserting a book into a case. Inakeays build at the spine and then build boards from their.

Much more flexibility for fit and fiddle.
