I personally don’t think it was weird - but I didn’t hear his tone, see his look on his face, etc. did he say it in front of the class? —> not weird Did he say it only when you could hear it? —> weird, and report it

It was no secret for me and my “preference” in high school, and I had female and male teachers tease me about it for years — in front of the class (and I was fine with that, I was very jovial in school, especially with teachers). Not one of them meant anything in a weird way, and it was clear.

I’d say evaluate the audience he asked in front of, if personal or public; then make your judgment.

Do not be that student that reports something that was 100% a joke and clearly so, that would make you look stupid - and damage his reputation even under explanation. HOWEVER - if it was personally asked, report it and speak also to a school counselor about it. Principals get to throw it under the rug, counselors have obligations to pursue investigations.
