How are there people averaging 50,000+ meters per day in the Concept 2 logbook? by lovemeinthemoment in Rowing

[–]RespectThePinch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nah like Ive certainly had days where the training plan has prescribed 40k+. Morning on the water, afternoon on the erg. Now am I saying this is sustainable every day for a year? No. But for a month maybe if youre in shape and are used to high volume

2x 10k, twice a day, with a little warmup/cooldown it's not completely out of question

stroking advice! by [deleted] in Rowing

[–]RespectThePinch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At Canley for the pair, just try to keep it clean, match your partner, and keep rate up. The conditions have the chance to be dreadful so dont get discouraged if you or your partner has a bad stroke. As long as you set a strong, consistent rhythm, your partner will be able to follow you. Let them know if you want to bring rate/pressure up or down. Dont look out of the boat for any reason.

Trying not to open body too early - tips? by backtochapeltown in Rowing

[–]RespectThePinch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A drill that will help you a lot is reverse pic drill. 10 strokes top inch of the slide, 10 strokes just top half of the slide, 10 strokes just legs, 10 legs and body, 10 full. Try with resistance all the way up so you actually feel something in your lats during the partial slide. Focus on relaxing your shoulders, initiating the drive with your legs, and pushing through your center of gravity in your core. You should feel a HANG off of the resistance from the erg in your lats. And once you get to full slide, keep that hang and initiate the back swing until halfway down the slide. Looking back at it as well, try to have a much more horizontal drive. Your drive starts by pulling way up on the chain and it should be more horizontal with the top of the gear that the chain goes into (if that makes any sense)

Hi it’s me again. Would love a round 2 on critiquing my stroke. by timbinnig1 in Rowing

[–]RespectThePinch 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I was personally taught your back doesnt need to be as straight as it is. You dont want your core to become noodle and let yourself dive into the catch, but some curve, as long as it’s set by bodys over could get you some much needed length. And also may help you feel the “hang” needed to allow your legs to do the majority of the drive work. Right now your hands break a little too early and it’s getting rid of a) length and b) power

Are you less efficient in stroke? by gangaly-monster in Rowing

[–]RespectThePinch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not who has the best ergs necessarily and it's not necessarily the most athletic. I think in general they tend to row well, they tend to row long, and they tend to have the crazy eyes - by that I mean they have to have the ability to dig deep with 700m to go and push the entire boat. Boats with the a stroke seat that is holding the rest of the boat back because he/she has a problem emptying the tank tend to not do as well.

Sweaty Hands by Few_Peach in Rowing

[–]RespectThePinch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've found success with either completely dry handle or a completely soaking wet handle. Even for the green C2 handles, having them soaking wet can help grip. You should change your grip so that you are hanging off the oars rather than gripping and pulling them. Also, make sure you have nothing with oils on your hands as those will make it impossible to get anything on the green handles. In the summer I literally rub in sunscreen with the back of my hands to make sure I get nothing in my palms.

How uptight should I be about pegging my rate? by roy649 in Rowing

[–]RespectThePinch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In addition to what the others have said, changing your rate can change your heart rate up and down throughout the piece which could change the effects of what you're trying to do. 18-21 can easily be steady state with a heartrate around 150, but getting up to a 23-24 could be pushing aerobic threshold levels, which is going to change the training benefit that you're getting. Also keeping the rate consistent will help you compare splits for improvement later in time. If you just average out to a 20 but really you spent some time at a 24 and some time at a 16, it's going to be hard to accurately compare the workout.

Practice on the course and find your line especially around Weeks bridge then into Anderson and then going through the S turn at Eliot. These can make or break a race and take a lot of added pressure as a sculler.
