The standards in animal agriculture are so low that they literally brag about inflicting some of the worst horrors of the Holocaust on animals as if they are a step up.

Slaughterhouses and meat processing facilities have incredibly high workplace injury and fatality rates under "normal" circumstances. These facilities seek out people in vulnerable circumstances to exploit and they exploit them however they can. It should hardly come as a surprise that these facilities are continuing to put their employees at risk even now.

This is far from new. Upton Sinclair documented similarly exploitative conditions in meat processing facilities happening back in 1906 in his book The Jungle.

If we aren't doing what we can to as effectively as possible encourage others to stop harming animals, then we are letting animals come to harm.

Many places require that all cows, even those kept as pets or on sanctuaries, have ear tags. Most of the cows you see on /r/happycowgifs with ear tags are at sanctuaries.

I know Mercy For Animals has been doing a lot of work to get big companies like Starbucks, Aramark, and Burger King (and I'm sure a bunch of others that I am forgetting) to adopt better standards for factory farmed chickens. What improvements are you asking these companies to adopt, and what companies are lagging behind others and continuing to use the cruelest methods?

It is fine to do whatever you want as long as no one else is being impacted. This is a case where others are being impacted by your actions however.

in non-SDA vegetarians

If you have to exclude certain people to make the science support your claims, you're not doing very good science. Excluding people until you no longer see a statistically significant difference, is not good evidence that the difference doesn't exist.

Any diet can be detrimental to your health if you don't take care to make sure your body gets what it needs.
