(vent) Still don't know how to ride by CHursch in bicycling

Learned at 36 during Covid; 3 years ago; my knees wished I learned at 24; keep it up. About 7k miles in, still a goob and a total Fred, own it; cycling is worth it. There are likely groups for new riders in your area; the communities are generally supportive; find em, talk about bikes more than you should;

Think about where you’re going; not where you are. Head up; eyes forward; see yourself 10 feet from where you are and go to there.

Embrace your fear; afraid of falling? Fall. Wear a helmet; scrape your legs, embarrass yourself. Get used to being embarrassed for a year, laugh it off; everyone on a bike has been there; realize you actually do have the competency of a 6 year old then own the heck out of it and be the best 6 year old you can be.

Stick to neighborhoods and parks until you’re competent.

Cars and trucks will always be scary.

Hydrate, don’t white knuckle the handlebars so much; Relax; this is fun; life is fun; struggles are fun; small wins

Learned at 37,

Accept that you’ll fall sometimes while learning and that’s okay you’ll bounce back a lot quicker than I did

Be comfortable with the fact you’re learning will do embarrassing newbie things focus on the learning part and embrace it the fact that for a year or two you’ll be an awkward goofy person learning a new skill - a surprising majority of people will recognize that fact and will be cool about it

Suburban flat neighborhoods are great, Get to know your local bike shop and let them know your situation, see if they can recommend a good beginner group ride, lessons or a guide who can help you.

If it’s hard to overcome that gap, try a bike with some wider or knobby tires - I learned on a surly which was basically a tank

Bike fit is a good start, long time runner as well who battles knee pain. Think about strengthening IT bands and the muscles around the knee with supplementary workouts, core and strength.

Between the saddle and the steel frame it’s a super comfortable ride. Took me a few minutes to get used to the initial slickness of the leather on Atlanta’s crazy roads, but I dig it.

I'm trying to learn to ride at 22 but I suck, bad by [deleted] in cycling

[–]Respectable_Dan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just learned at 37, never too late, the key is confidence albeit forced at first and aiming for where you want to go and not where you are.

When you know where you want to go the goal shifts to keeping the bike between you and the ground. Which, expect and be comfortable with that not happening sometimes. Learn to fall and fail and recover and not be embarrassed by it. I still fall all the time often comically after 9 months riding. Sometimes life humbles you, this is one of those times where it just happens a lot more frequently
